Those pride tournaments were like fighting movies from the late 80s and 90s. UFC needs to do those types of tournaments. Imagine if we had a tournament in lightweight division with prime Khabib Nurmagamedov, Conor McGregor, Tony Ferguson, Islam Makhachev, Rafael dos Anjos, Charles Oliveira, Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, Edson Barboza, Anthony Pettis, Nate Diaz, Al Iaquinta, Kevin Lee, Dan Hooker, Michael Chandler. Imagine crazy hype from fans if it's in a huge arena. They could do it on separate events, just like how Pride did it 👍👍

Peak of mma. Best cards, best fighters at that time.
@mmaaldente2 ай бұрын
This is my favorite tournament, and Final Conflict 2003 is my favorite MMA event. This video just covers the tournament fights, but the cards were both stacked. If you're a new fan, imagine watching Rampage/Chuck and Wanderlei/Yoshida, knowing the two winners will fight 3 hours later (right after Nogueira and Crocop's Interim Championship fight). It's exponentially more exciting than having them fight 3 months later. Even if the athletic commissions today would sanction it, I just don't think many fighters would make that second walk- let alone a third. It took balls of steel, true grit, and, if in being honest, probably some strong drugs, but they all made that walk. In their 8 Grand Prix tournaments, the only fighter who won but had to step out due to an injury was Paulo Filho.

Problem I see is they gave Wand the easy path. Imagine fighting Liddel and Wand the same night. Yoshida wasn't nearly as dangerous as Liddel or even Alistair at the time.
@mmaaldente2 ай бұрын
@@sergiosergio5497 Yoshida was unlikely to do damage in defeat, so, in that sense, it was favorable for Wand in the tournament setting. But, at the time, Yoshida was considered VERY dangerous. Nobody respected Wand's BJJ at the time (his first fight with Yoshida helped me appreciate it), so, this was thought to be "Striker vsm Grappler." Yoshida was only 3-0, but he had 3 big wins (also his NC/Win vs. Royce). With his Gold Medal Judo and his gi, he was looked at as a potentially very dangerous matchup for any striker (Wand, Chuck, or Rampage). And, of course, the same could be said in reverse. I was sure that, if Wand won, it'd be a 60 second stomping. There's no way somebody who's never lost a fight yet is going to stand up to the danger of Wanderlei Silva in defeat. Turns out he's tough as all fuck.

PRIDE MODE!!
@santiagodunbar23812 ай бұрын
@@darklights.burnerMMA can happen in any arena there just needs to be rules based around the arena. You’re just used to seeing a cage. Rogan has thrown out the idea of a basketball court type arena with no walls/ropes just out of bounds (if a fighter backs up out of bounds the get penalized after first warning, if the round ends with someone in top control the next round starts in top control) which would honestly be the truest form of MMA, having nothing but your own skills to dictate your win. No fingers or toes in cage, no using a wall or ropes as leverage for advantageous positions just pure skill.
