As a South African, I have to agree. Take nothing away from the fight, it was a great fight, but after the 5th round I was 100% sure that Strickland would get the votes. THat being said, Strickland in no way dominated the fight. He dominated the first round, definitely, but as a whole it was a close fight and definitely lived up to the pre match hype.

There’s so many title fights are were 50/50 in the past and the champion kept the belt so this one just doesn’t make sense. In UFC history, if the challenger had a close fight by ANY means, the judges did not hand them the title...It's just reality. If you don't clearly dominate the champion, or tap him out or leave him laying on the canvas, you're not going to get the belt. To be the champ you gotta beat the champ. A 70+ significant strike difference on paper is kinda crazy. If takedowns count for THAT much even when u do absolutely nothing with them and the guy gets straight back up to his feet then we need reevaluate the scoring system. What I find odd is that Superstar champions don’t lose those championship fight split decisions unless they were clearly defeated. It only happens when it’s a guy who doesn’t draw/sell tickets or a controversial fighter like Sean. Example of a few of the Fighters who lost a close SD for the belt when they were champ: Moreno, Demetrius Johnson, Dillashaw (during his 1st run vs Cruz) all notorious for not being big ticket sellers during their time. Dillashaw didn’t start selling til after the 1st Garbrandt fight.

Although it was a well-balanced fight, what determined DuPlessis' victory was business. I don't speak without proof: Firstly, there is an understanding that very balanced title fights should always be directed towards the champion. Second, for every very balanced title fight, but which the challenger actually won, the champion who just lost was given an immediate rematch. Thus, despite being very balanced, the fight was still won by a small margin by Strickland. In the worst case scenario for him, he should have at least left this fight with a rematch already scheduled.

The flaw of this fight was the takedowns, how the judges in UFC categorize/score them... a couple of badly executed takedowns who were immediately guarded, barely a couple of minutes of control, they shouldn't count more than significant strikes, hell no. The UFC needs to revise how they score these fights (and I am a big fan of Khabib, but like I said, there are levels of execution for takedowns and control, if Khabib is at the highest level, Du Plessis is at the lowest)
