First a question: have any novels been written set in the UFO universe? I've looked around but was surprised to find none. :( It seems to be a massive missed opportunity. I've been a Gerry Anderson fan since before I can remember (am 46). I only found out about UFO a few months ago. I'd seen some Space 1999 and kind of liked it, but this is on another level. I'm deeply in love with this show for so many reasons. I immediately went out and bought the DVDs, but I'm trying to go through them very slowly because I know I'll be very sad when I get to the end. The show combines the 70s aesthetic I love, sci-fi, X Files creapy-ness, Anderson-ness, and of course an amazing cast of characters. Was very sad to find out Ed Bishop had passed. He's incredible in UFO. That voice! I giggled with delight when I figured out why I recognised him: he plays Captain Blue's voice, and does the opening narration. I know you know all this, but I didn't. :) Anyway, thank you!!

There are a lot of things like that, such as why would you design your primary Earth atmosphere interceptor to launch from a submarine? Why would Shado allow anyone to see Straker without first doing a complete background check and why would Straker's secretary let anyone into his office without an escort? Why would you use a bunch of tracked vehicles like tanks to search the British countryside, and why the heck would you mark them for Shado, when a helicopter could do it faster and way less obtrusively? How come UFOs aren't constantly attacking S.I.D.? Why hide headquarters under a movie studio which really is no more secretive than a nondescript building in a commercial district somewhere? And how is it that UFOs can survive traveling across light-years of interstellar space but put them in Earth's atmosphere and they start to disintegrate? I mean, yeah, we used to have acid rain but it wasn't THAT bad lol.

@@Cryptonymicus "why would you design your primary Earth atmosphere interceptor to launch from a submarine? " So it could be hidden. 70% of the earth is ocean, so it could be hiding anywhere. "Why hide headquarters under a movie studio" They explained that it allowed and take out them to bring in strange looking vehicles and such without drawing attention. IF asked, they would say it was being moved to a movie location for a shoot. A gorgeous (and totally impractical design) with that awesome great missile sticking out of the front.....it looked amazing on-screen! 👍 A 'one-shot wonder' (if it hit the target!! It was a fun show, but the timelines in this Universe were way optimistic. We didn't have SSTs and daily moonshots in 1984, let alone Space 1999 technology in 1999. And artificial gravity for the Moon base? We don't even have a theory on how to do that yet. They could have bumped it up a hundred years and not necessarily have been too far off. Some other the tech decisions that Shado made were pretty ridiculous too. Keeping their air force underwater and having only four fighter jets available to cover the entire planet are two obvious flaws. Printing the name of their secret organization on all of their secret hardware was probably also a bad idea. One thing that wasn't a mistake--having only one nuclear warhead per moon interceptor was probably fine. With the UFOs being encountered at SOL 8 (8 times the speed of light), it's a miracle that they were ever detected, intercepted and fired on at all--frankly, it's like trying to intercept a beam from a searchlight midway as it travels between the ground and the clouds.
@Emdee56322 жыл бұрын
I was very young when UFO was first on the small screen. I did not understand why in the moon base the women had PURPLE hair and completely different uniforms compared to what the men wore. Were they robots? Many years later I found out Sylvia Anderson had apparently been in control of the wardrobe department. Apparently, she thought this is what future military uniforms would look like... Because I was several years older when Space 1999 came out I liked it much more than UFO, although the second show had its own fair share of all kinds of sillyness. IMHO Space: 1999 was the better show. When I now watch UFO episodes again, it seems that show did not age well.
@c.augustin Жыл бұрын
Well, I know, this is not meant to be perfectly real, but the "Eagle" is complete BS - even nuclear powered rocket motors need some form of propellant (to be heated by the nuclear fusion reactors) to create thrust, and those would need much more storage space than is shown in the design. And it would not be able to operate in atmosphere (there's so much speed to shed when trying to enter the atmosphere, I doubt that this would be feasible). But for the moon, well, maybe, if it had larger propellant tanks … (same with some of the other designs shown here). Still, nice to watch!
