the one thing I am always harping on my wife about is staying off her goddamn phone when she's out in public. I am very aware of my surroundings and the amount of people I see with their chins tucked into her chest while walking is laughable
@unvaccinatedamerican9620Ай бұрын
Exactly! There are people that I see regularly, like neighbors or people at the gym, who I’ve never seen NOT looking at their phone. It blows my mind.

I grew up in the Bx New York. Situational awareness became second nature. It always seemed that someone was up to no good in my neighborhood. A person learned quickly what streets were safe and which ones to avoid.

Was looking at my phone for directions in a US city I didn't know, saw one homeless guy make a few glances at me in my periferal vision and his body language suggested he was unsure as to whether to tail me or not (still looking down at my phone aware of his posturing). Gets 20 metre's down the street and he's now by himself having just come round the corner looking at me and put his hood up. Watched his reflection in windows of building opposite on and off for about 10 seconds, stopped, turned around and stared at him in his eyes whilst crossing my arms from about 17metres away. He took a double take and knew I saw what his intentions were and saw my defensive body language and acknowledgement of his predatory behaviour and he turned around and walked back to where he came from. Have to say this guy was your average untrained guy, trained guys you've got to be way more evasive so then their movements look unnatural to you and others. You can look lost whilst they look like their intentionally following you.

I find that when someone is tip toeing behind you and dry washing their hands while they chuckle softly it can sometimes be a red flag.
A few weeks ago, my wife and I went to breakfast at the local breakfast place. It was cold, rainy and dark early in the morning. As i pull in to park, theres a guy in dark sweats, a dark hoodie pulled over his head and sitting facing the road opposite us. Suddenly, he gets up and looks like he's about to move towards us. I see this, immediately scan the area and get in a defensive posture and i have my sidearm i appendix carry. I kid you not, i don't know if it was my posture or my look that said, "not today jackass". But our eyes met and he walked off in the opposite direction. Chalk one up for us, the good guys.

@@actontreadway1168 is the weapon stil on the side of the carrier? (his side, yes so yes)
@actontreadway116821 күн бұрын
@@nickvandenberg4244 we’d have to agree that the front is a side; I’m ok with that semantically, but since literally ALL weapons are carried or transported outSIDE, then it starts to appear as though the prefix “side” is superfluous. I’m calling for a round table of the highest level military personnel on the planet to resolve this issue.
@nickvandenberg424420 күн бұрын
@@actontreadway1168 A sidearm is an individual-served weapon that is kept at one's side and can be rapidly accessed if needed or in the belt usually in a holster. A sidearm may be carried alone or as an ancillary weapon to a more frequently-used primary weapon. therefore it is a secundary weapon.

Good basic tips to live by. And it's not hard to do when it's become a HABIT to engage in public in full awareness. Distractions must be minimised and appreciating your going about is not hindered when you're trained in being vigilant all the time, that said, if you trained yourself to be disciplined to do these simple rules to loiter in public, wether that's an empty street or crossing a busy tourist packed square. My daughter of 15 is taught to walk in the streets like this. Be aware of vehicles engine noise. Do certain vehicles stop further up down where you're heading. On her bicycle, are there cars matching her pace at a distance. All that and much more.

Very good video, thanks. And situationnal awereness does not deprive you of living the moment nor enjoying it. If so, then you're doing it wrong.

Something I fought to change on my own was using airdots while walking in public. It's good to hear my playlist but can't be absent from surroundings, because security is my responsabiity.

Many headphones also have a extra hearing feature with that you can even hear conversations from a far better or pick up sounds you would normaly miss. One ear should still always be free and don‘t listen to music while walking .

Listen. I wear sound enhancing shooting headphones. They give you Spiderman hearing (and protect when a loud bang goes off). Test out the Sordin Supreme Pro-X. It looks like you're listening to music, unaware and an easy victim but you here footsteps getting close and overhear conversations easily. You can even reply to someone walking 5m behind you and they will be stupified and your underlying message is clear.
