Sir Gawain and the Green Knight • ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’ is a late 14th century Chivalric romance in Middle English. ( North West Midlands dialect ) • Alliterative verse • Verse form:- Alliterative Revival with bob and wheel. • 101 stanzas,2530 lines • It is one of the best known Arthurian stories, with its plot combining two types of folk motifs: i) the beheading game ii) the exchange of winnings • Characters:- Green Knight Gawain King Arthur Lady Bertilak Sir Bertilak • Theme:- The poem opens with a descriptions of a New year’s eve feast at Camelot, the Arthurian court. During the feast a mysterious knight, with green hair and green skin, riding a green horse, arrives and challenges the assembled crowd to a bizarre game- any knight is allowed to strike him with his axe, given he is returned the blow in a year and a day. Sir Gawain takes up a challenge from the Green Knight to give him blow, which sets off a chain of events in which Gawain faces trials and temptations. On the way his chivalric and honour will be put into question multiple time by various temptation and advances; particularly by the appearance of Lady Bertilak.

sir Gawain and the green knight, is the most intensely alliterative poem in middle English. Alliterative poetry has a long history in English ; most Anglo-saxon poetry was organized around alliteration rather than rhyme, and the 14th century. The story describes how sir Gawain ,a knight of king Arthur's round the table , accepts a challenges from a mysterious "Green Knight" who dares any knight to strike him with his axe if he will take a return blow in a year and a day. MORAL - Gawain realize that honor requires all kinds of honesty.

"Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" follows a classic quest formula,with a knight receiving challenge,going out on a journey to meet that challenge and returning home to report on his quest. Sir Gawain,a knight, accepts a challenge from a mysterious "Green Knight" who dares any knight to strike him whit his axe if he will take return blow in a year and a days.Gawain accepts and beheads him.But the knight picks up his severed head and leaves, telling Gawain to look for the Green Chapel. After one year, Gawain sets out in search of the Green Chapel,there he finds a castle. He takes shelter there. Whenever, the lord of the castle goes out, the lady tries to seduce him. Gawain refused her politely,although he gave her some kisses. Finally,she offers him a magic belt that will protect the life of any man. When Gawain reached Green Chapel,Green Knight makes him realize about his mistake with three blow for not telling the truth about the belt to the host of that castle. Realizing his fault, Sir Gawain promised to wear the belt as a reminder.

Sir Gawain, nephew of king arthur ready for duel and lost the bet. According to the bet sir Gawain had to go green chapel to surrender for dying. Sir Gawain reachs at the castle of bertilak where he was Living with his wife Morgan le Faye. He stays there for three days. Next bertilak goes to hunt with a bet. When sir Gawain stays there Morgan le Faye tries to seduce but he kept five virtues Generosity, chastity, fellowship, courtesy and compassion that was suggested by king arthur. But she kissed all three days. When bertilak came from hurting with a boar, they shared boar and kiss to reach other. Third day she gives her girdle to save his life.
