Okay, so the lineup for this video is as follows- top left is Cesar De La Rosa, bari-tenor and the newest permanent member of VoicePlay. Top-center is the feature, Jose Rosario Jr. He's a baritone, and a member of Rockapella, and he has featured on one other VoicePlay track (which, oddly enough, is like a spiritual ancestor to the song from this video. My Mother Told Me is an old Viking song.). Top-right is Eli (rhymes with 'jelly', short for Eliezer) Jacobson, tenor. Bottom left is the vocal percussionist, Layne Stein, while bottom right is bass extraordinaire Geoff (pronounced 'Jeff') Castellucci. Layne and Geoff take turns creating the 99% of the vocal arrangements for the music they perform; Hoist the Colours was arranged by Geoff. VoicePlay's lineup has changed a fair amount in the past few years, so earlier videos will have faces you won't recognize. J. None was a previous baritone, as was Tony Wakim, and until 2020 high tenor Earl Elkins Jr. was a part of the group, and along with Layne and Geoff one of the original members still with VoicePlay. Also, VoicePlay loves to collaborate with other artists, so you'll often see folks like Rachel Potter, Deejay Young and Omar Cardona showing up. BTW, if you're into the bass, then you'll definitely want to check out Geoff Castellucci's solo page, with his own cover songs. You see, not only does Geoff have the ability to descend to indescribably deep notes, but he can also hold his own with the tenors. When he multitracks his vocals into gorgeously arranged harmonies, it has to be heard to be believed. Welcome to the rabbithole!

P.S. ... Layne Stein was originally the baritone. When Scott Porter left the group (some years ago), Layne switched to vocal percussion. But Layne still sings too, in whole songs (such as Can't Help Falling In Love) or portions of songs that don't require beatboxing. And he throws in some comedy too... he's a French chef in Little Mermaid Medley and a French waiter in You're a Mean One, Mr Grinch.

Thank you! My favorite thing is watching someone react to Voiceplay for the first time! They are astounding, my very favorite of the big three. Next: We Don't Talk About Bruno The Dragonborn Comes Dream On All of these have the current lineup, you will want to go back and look at their older stuff, but you will see different artists. Geoff and Layne are the remaining founding members, originally organized in 1997 and rebranded as Voiceplay 10 years ago. When you start reacting to Geoff's solo work, start with House of the Rising Sun, then pick anything. He's only been doing solo work since the pandemic, so not a huge amount. And when you watch his stuff, ALWAYS have the closed captioning on, he throws in some humor there. And always watch until you see his Patron list start, or you might miss something. Welcome to the rabbit hole.

Always love to see someone get blown away by their first Voice Play video and appreciate the 'theatricality' on top of the fantastic musicality. They do their own costuming and have great makeup people that they use when needed, they direct their own videos and do their own lighting. Eli (bald tenor) is the main lighting guy for the group, the director of the video is usually the one who arranged the song, so either the bass Geoff or beatboxer Layne since they do almost all of the arrangements. It's always fun to see people start swaying along with the group once the first 'Yo Ho' starts! Really hope you do more VoicePlay reactions and also check out Geoff's solo work. Yeah, it was Geoff's bass that stood out for me when I watched my first VoicePlay video (that was Eleanor Rigby, which didn't even have him singing much out of baritone range), and from there I watched his 16 Tons video and have been a major fan of both Geoff and VP since. But, honestly, they ALL have such incredible voices and great acting skills! Eli can be smooth as silk or take on a rock tenor rasp with equal ease, doing incredible character voices as well when called for. Cesar is called bari-tenor, but he can pretty much match Eli's top notes and Layne actually has a beautiful baritone that seldom gets heard since he is such an incredible beatboxer.

Also you’re gonna hear this a lot but you’re gonna wanna check out Oogie Boogie’s Song. I’m glad it wasn’t your first vid though, because they do so many character voices in it you don’t get a feel for how great they are. So now that you know, add Oogie Boogie Somg to your list. Because Geoff hits the most insane low note you’ve ever heard. And he goes even lower than the one in that vid. Nothing here even comes close to the note in that. And his name is Geoff Castalluci. I’m positive I spelled that wrong.
@krystofdayne2 жыл бұрын
Bit misleading, Geoff hits an F1 twice here and only an E1, a bare semitone lower, once in Oogie Boogie's Song 😅 So to say "nothing comes close to that note here" is just plain wrong. I still agree that he should check out Oogie Boogie's Song for all of Geoff's solo chops but still.

The fun thing with the bass, Geoff, he has a a 5 octave range and can cover everything from WAY below an average bass to the above tenors. VoicePlay quickly became my favorite a cappella group; with Geoff being my favorite singer... being a low bass (slightly lower than even Geoff, actually), I may be a bit biased, lol.
@gailseatonhumbert2 жыл бұрын
All 3 of the famous acapella basses are ridiculous with their vocal ranges. Geoff and Tim together get pretty funny usually and the running joke lately since Tim cut his hair is can he still get down as low as the other 2 😀

@@gailseatonhumbert, I am another one of those basses with a ridiculous range (E0-C6 is my useable range; although, I can drop down into the negative octaves (overall, my range is over 7 octaves)... I just cannot come close to Geoff or Tim in their smoothness. I've been balding since I was 18, for the record, lol.
@gailseatonhumbert2 жыл бұрын
@@johndeeregreen4592 timbre is not something you can much about but I prefer Avi's actually of the 3.That is a very personal reaction and not measurable as a range. Technique though is something that can be worked on. Opera training is pretty intense and you can hear the same approach to vocals with Peter Barber from the Bass Gang as with Avi Kaplan. Austin Brown, high tenor of Homefree, has the same mastery of technique in his vocals. Not opera but musical theater training in Austin's case. I do like and listen to Geoff and Tim but I am not alone in stopping dead and hitting replay whenever Avi got a phrase or 2 of melody to sing with Pentatonix and now layering and recording all the voice parts on his album is also blowing away the music reviewers. It's still nice to see lower voice types gaining in popularity though after all the years of tenor leads since the 70s.

Great reaction! (New subscriber here.) A lot of us search the Internet every day to find first time reactions to VoicePlay and are pretty much always delighted. (From time to time you get the person that just doesn’t get it. They complain that they’re too theatrical. To me it just adds to the performance- certainly does not detract from it, but everybody’s different.) I read all the comments and saw lots of great suggestions, so I’m just going to sit back and watch for your reactions. After you’ve watched a few you might want to check out their Just Sing. They released it shortly after Covid hit and contacted a lot of their collaborators. (They do a lot of guest artists.) They used it as a fundraiser to help musicians that were not able to work due to Covid. Make sure you put the subtitles on because you’ll get to see who these people are and some of the amazing productions they’ve been in. There is a Grammy winner and Broadway performers, in addition to other amazing performers who haven’t been duly appreciated yet. It’s a pretty impressive group. That way you aren’t quite so thrown when you come across an older video and think who in the world is that! In addition, two of my ongoing favorites are the Little Mermaid medley and Boy Bands in 5 minutes. I didn’t see those mentioned.

WELCOMEEE to the acapella rebbit hole :) about favorites - when I first got to know Voiceplay I thought like you that the Bass is the best, but then I got to know them a bit more, their diversity, their creativity, and I came to the conclusion that it is impossible to pick 1 favorite. Each one of them is so uniqely talented and crazy (both vocally and mentally) that you cannot not love them each the best. It's a bit of a long comment but if you'd like to learn about them I think this is a godd starting point: Geoff Castalucci - Bass - has a 5 octaves range, meaning he can sing super low and super high and still sound so fucking incredible. he is super creative and funny in a dad jokes kind of vibe. songs that bring him to light: hoist the colours, oogie boogie, you're a mean one mr. grinch. Eli Jacobson - tenor 1 (now) - before he joined Voiceplay he was in a different acapella group where he was a baritone (or maybe bass, im not sure) and in live performances he can sometimes cover for the bass if Geoff is singing, but he cannot go as low as geoff. since 2020 he became tenor 1 (before, he was tenor 2) and he can hit crazyyyy high notes that I, as a biological female, have trouble reaching. plus he has a perfect rock tone that you can listen to all day long and he can act the perfect villain. songs that bring him to light: my mother told me, carry on wayward son. Cesar De La Rosa - baritone - joined VP to cover for baritone after their last one left VP to join the navy, but he too can reach super high notes (proof in "Dream on" by Aerosmith). amazing tone and vocal control and he is super sassy. he has a lot of attitude in a lot of their clips and he is super funny and matches VP's vibe perfectly. songs that bring him to light: we're good, butter, we don't talk about bruno. Layne Steine - vocal percussionist - he is BY FAR one of the most talented, creative, insane people I have ever laid eyes on. you can call him the mastermind behind most of their videos and music. besides being an awesome vocal percussionist he can also sing pretty low and reach up to a tenor range. he also has a production company together with former VP member Tony Wakim, called "pattycake productions" where they write, produce and film a lot of super crazy and funny shows and music clips. a lot of Voicplay's video in recent years are shot in pattycake productions studio. songs that bring him to light: he doesn't sing much but sometimes he'll do funny sections specially in their disney covers, in their cover of "warriors" he plays violin while beatboxing
@Aurora-cv5to2 жыл бұрын
Wonderful reaction, thanks! You might want to check Warriors (Imagine Dragons) and then Dream On (Aerosmith) - when they did Dream On recently, they visualized it as the follow-up to Warriors (and left most of us with our mouths hanging open). Both are stunning, both have amazing performances from Layne Stein, the beatbox. Fair warning: he breaks rules in Warriors and you get a whole lot more in addition to vocal percussion. To see a very different aspect of VoicePlay, check We Don't Talk About Bruno - it's really fun. Don't expect to see the exact lineup from performance to performance: they've always brought in a lot of featured performers, and they lost a member in both 2020 and in 2021. The key is that the quality never falters, and their featured performers are brought in so seamlessly they always seem like full members. Love Geoff - but really love Layne, too. Layne has a gorgeous baritone, and is so creative! Geoff's arrangements are astonishingly skilled, and his chords beyond beautiful.... but again, I prefer Layne's. He has the same adroitness, but everything he does seems to touch the heart directly. Yet they're both so talented, and their talents so different, that comparing them is almost meaningless.
@Wildecat102 жыл бұрын
Not much more for me to say. I agree with everything in this comment and hope you take these suggestions for reactions. Layne was originally the group’s baritone, when Scott Porter (yes, from Friday Night Lights, Lucifer, etc) was the beatboxer. Yet he learned quickly and the assorted drums and other sound effects seem to grow with each new video. Yet I love his rap (even though that’s not normally something I like) and love it even more when he sings. As Geoff once said, he has the voice of an angel.

I agree with all of your favorite covers. Geoff is definitely one of my top 3 male singers I've ever heard; even better than Elvis. Right up there with Freddie Mercury and Steve Perry.
@nightthornkvala941322 жыл бұрын
Way Down is a cover of an Elvis song. This one is a Geoff solo number, which as usual features 4 Geoffs. Take note of the name tags on their chests; many people have mispronounced or misspelled his name that this is a dig at that. Layne and Eli and Geoff's wife Kathy are the bodies behind the direction, lighting, and props. And one thing you should remember with videos by VoicePlay, Home Free, and their members is that the song itself ending DOES NOT mean that the video is over. There's often a message or shoutout or something important coming that shouldn't be missed. For examples, there is Scott's message at the end of VoicePlay's HALO theme, and Home Free's Austin Brown's shoutout to reactors after his beautiful Ain't No Sunshine is done.

Good first start on these guys. They are based out of Florida and Voiceplay is the most theatrical of the 3. Geoff Castellucci, the bass singer, is fun. He has his own channel as well and does quite a bit on his own. 16 Tons is a good one of his. Like the other 2, Tim Foust and Avi Kaplan, he has an amazing range and can sing quite high as well as low. Geoff also has tutorials on his channel for singing bass. Homefree and Voiceplay were on the same competition season of the SingOff. They have a fun video together of "Zombies vs Hillbillies". "Queen in 5 Minutes" is another good one for Voiceplay. Tim Foust of Homefree solo is more into Doo Wop though he does alot with Peter Hollens and for them together I recommend "Misty Mountains", Geoff also does a good one of that and Avi Kaplan is off into folk rock with his original music. If bass is your passion you have to try the Bass Gang on KZbin. All younger bass singers. 2 of them got together and did an "Avi Kaplan Medley" of some of his original songs. If you ever react to that one make sure you go all the way to the end there is a surprise 😀.

Voiceplay is definitely an experience. Every one of these guys is spectacular, but yeah, Geoff hits you hard with that super low voice (he also has a solo channel you should def. check out). Layne is a BEAST at beatboxing and sometimes he treats us by singing as well. FYI, Geoff also arranged this, and Eli (the tenor with the amazing rock snarl) did the lighting. Geoff and Layne trade off doing arrangements (and Eli has contributed as well). Cesar (the eye) is the newest member and he has this amazing ability to sing whatever is needed, however it needs to be sung. Kind of the character actor of vocals. My suggestions for the next listen? Well, Enemy (from Arcane) is terrific. We Don’t Talk About Bruno (yes, it’s been done almost to death but VP has its own way of making it new, so don’t skip it). Pretty much go to their channel, open the videos and scroll-you’ll hit gold. Another acapella group that’s just getting started that really deserves some attention is The Bass Gang. ALL basses. ALL really good basses. Check out Yellow Flicker Beat.

Welcome to the VoicePlay rabbit hole! Definitely suggest watching VoicePlay and Geoff's solo videos with the captions on. Geoff always includes captions because of his wife's hearing loss, and we get a hint of his sense of humor. Watch until the credits roll. if this was school, Pentatonix would be the student council, VoicePlay are the theater geeks, and Home Free is out in the parking lot hosting a tailgate party. They're all really talented and cover a wide range of genres though they each have their specialties. But my favorite is Geoff, and by extension VoicePlay. Being from Orlando, the VP guys have all worked for various theme parks and often get into the theatrical side with makeup, costumes, etc. and telling the story of the song. Geoff danced and sang for 10 years in green makeup and platform shoes as Frankenstein's Monster (Frankie) in Universal's Beetlejuice Revue. (His wife Kathy was Bride of Frankenstein.) Their creativity lets them make the most of any venue, from a studio (like Pattycake Productions, co-owned by Layne the beatboxer and Tony Wakim, former VP member and Dracula at Universal) to historic houses, to the dining room of Geoff's parents (Headless Horseman) to a storage room (Big Bad John). Unlike most other groups, VoicePlay does not have a manager or production company. Kathy cracks the whip as the production manager, and whoever takes lead on arranging the song (usually Geoff and Layne take turns) also takes lead on producing the video -- arranging for the venue, costumes, set design and props, lighting, video editing, hiring any subs like camera operators, makeup, and so on. They've been growing their skills, increasing the sophistication of their productions, since the days they competed on The Sing-Off. It's really obvious with the special lighting that Eli (bald tenor; name rhymes with jelly) has been doing, like with this one. Geoff has been moving away from the "park and bark" style fixed-camera shoot to using a steadi-cam for Ain't No Sunshine and its emotional polar opposite, a cover of Way Down by Elvis. His solo stuff is usually just him and his wife (she's usually behind the cameras but has a cameo in Monster Mash) and his many clones singing harmony. Geoff and Layne have been singing together since middle school, and professionally before they even graduated high school. If Geoff is in full body makeup (Little Mermaid Medley, Oogie Boogie's Song, Kidnap the Sandy Claws, etc.) Layne arranged it.

I really enjoyed your reaction and am a new subscriber looking foward to your journey of acapella groups. Voice Play is a group based out of Orlando Florida and all the members and many of their frequent guest singers have worked for Universal and/or Disney theme parks as performers. They are very theatrical and are often referred to as the theater kids of acapella groups (Pentatonix is more Pop music style and Home Free has more of a Country/folk style but they all cover different genres of music). Voice Play's Disney covers (such as this one from 'Pirates Of The Caribbean') are the best around with so much attention put into their arrangements, costumes, settings, lighting and production and they do all of their own production. If you like Disney, my favorite covers are "Little Mermaid Medley" and "We Don't Talk about Bruno". If you are into adventure gaming, you would enjoy "Skyrim Dragonborn Comes", "Hallo", or "My Mother Told Me" to name a few. They cover different genres of music so I would recommend starting with their playlist and picking songs you know and like--you won't be disappointed. The bass singer, Geoff Castellucci, is amazing as he is one of the best basses around but has a five octave voice range. You will definitely want to check out Geoff's solo channel as well.

You're spot on about the 3 juggernauts of professional acapella being VP, HF, and Pentatonix, but there are a couple of other artists of whom you might want to be aware. Voctave is an acapella ensemble based out of Orlando, like Voiceplay, but most of its members are vocal cast members at Disney World in their day jobs. There are 11 in the group now, but earlier videos had a few less. They are more pop and standards oriented in their repertoire. The other is Peter Hollens, who is on his own but does many collaborations with other acapella artists, including Avi Kaplan and Tim Foust. His collab with Home Free doing "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is a treat.

Geoff has a monthly livestream chat on his Patreon page/channel and VoicePlay has group lifestream, individual members livestream that rotate, and videoshoot livestreams. PattyCake Productions is Layne Stein and Tony Wakim's Production company where they film VoicePlay videos, some of Geoff's solo videos, as well as Disney themed live action videos. The beatboxer's name is Layne Stein and he and the bass Geoff Castellucci take turns arranging most of their songs. Eli (pronounced Ellie like jelly) Jacobson the singer with the very rock sounding tenor handles their lighting for their videos and also has arranged a few of the songs they have done. They basically have a system for how they arrange, set up, film and produce their songs and videos, whoever arranges the song takes the lead on setting up the video for the song and handling the costuming and location and filming and all of that. Layne Stein co owns a production company with a former member of Voiceplay named Tony Wakim. Their production company is called Pattycake Productions and that is where they film a lot of their videos and Geoff Castellucci has also filmed some of his solo videos at Pattycake.

They are immensely talented and by all accounts are humble guys. But I have to admit that I do like a low note that I can feel as well as hear.

In case you didn't catch it, Geoff (the bass singer in the bottom right) is the one who also hits that high note at 4:41 like it's nothing at all. The man's range is insane. Some basic info on the rest of the group...Cesar is the newest member seen here with the white eye and haunting voice. Jose Rosario Jr is the guest singer in the middle with the cutlass. Eli (pronounced el-ee) is the rock tenor in the top right. And Layne is the vocal percussion in the bottom left. He makes some of the wildest sounds I have ever heard come out of a person's mouth. He's seriously not human.

Voiceplay is awesome! Goeff (pronounced Jeff) Castellucci is their bass. He does his own stuff as well you should totally check that out. His version of House of the Rising Sun is amazing. Some good ones for Voiceplay, jeeezzz its so hard to pick, you really can't go wrong. Dream on, My mother told me, Dragonborn comes. Something a bit older before the line up changed, Sh-Boom is amazing.

Welcome to the rabbit hole known as Voiceplay. Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci (Thr Bass) has his own channel so you must check that out as well. You can go wrong with any of their songs.

Listening to his deepest bass notes and the vibration in it, he is definitely utilising throat singing techniques to hit that note. I don't think you could get that low in the register without doing so. I think it is because sound that deep requires a degree of vibration you don't access just from "clean singing". Knowing how much you like bass, you should check out Colm McGuinness. He has an incredible timbre and depth. He also does a lot of songs in their original languages. For your future Voiceplay list, since everyone's gonna tell you to do something different: Oogie Boogie Song We Don't Talk About Bruno (you should probably only do this if you've seen Encanto) The Dragonborn Comes (Skyrim theme) My Mother Told Me Little Mermaid & Moana Medley's Carry on My Wayward Son Those are probably the most popular, and then they have their newer ones like Enemy by Imagine Dragons etc. Geoff also has his own channel if you wanna check out some more of that ridiculous bass-y tone.

Thank you thank you thank you for an awesome reaction. So glad you liked it. Please do yourself a great favor & do a reaction video of Voice Plays version of Carry On My Wayward Son. They did an absolute amazing job on this one. Voice Play are known as The Theater Kids. They do their own arrangements either by Geoff ( Jeff ) the low bass singer or Layne the beat boxer. Eli the bald high tenor does the lighting & Geoff usually does the set. They often dress for the occasion. Their newest one is Dream On originally done by Aerosmith. Voice Play does it better.

VoicePlay needs to make a rockopera/rockmusical. Check out their cover of Dream On. Also, as far as theatrics... Friends on the Other Side.

@@JustJmax i’ve watched a few of Adam Rupps things. It’s not normally my thing but I’ve heard so much about him. He is considered pretty much a legend. The one thing I do appreciate about Layne’s beatboxing is that he does not limited itself to a drum kit. I’m not even sure he limits himself to sounds from this universe. He comes up with some of the strangest sounds but they seem to work.
