My boy used to ty to put me on to UGK back in da day when they did "Pocket Full of Stones" on the Menace2Society soundtrack but I won't feelin it then. I gotta good ear for good music but some sht slides past me occasionally. I'm from Va so I was used to hearing mostly East Coast cats like EPMD,Rakim, Brand Nubian, Black Moon, Smif-n-Wesson,etc. and a little West Coast like Ice Cube, Too Short, and mostly anything Dr. Dre produced or co-signed. It won't tilli got a little older and started understandin the game better plus the South had that wordplay that was totally different than what I used to listenin to that I started bangin UGK music. When I had my first cup of lean and heard that chopped-n-screwed music, that shit sounded perfect to me. I could keep goin on ad on but long story short, UGK goes down as one of the best dous in rap and Pimp C was one of the realest cats that would keep it 100 about how he felt or anything you asked him. I believe him callin out Atlanta as the gay capitol of the world and was saying he knew who the gay rappers was but he wont gonna disrespect them had them still paranoid. But when he said Russel Simmons was gay straight up and down and then he called out Ne-yo sayin he had on so much lip gloss, it look like he had eaten a pork chop sandwich with no hands, that made him marked by the powers that be. Russell Simmons is high up there in the secret societies(check out the interview with Uncle Russ's nephew who was in a horror core group signed to Def Jam tell about shit he seen and about how he stopped because he wouldn't do certain things to climb up the ladder, its on KZbin) and Ne-yo is not only a platinum selling artist but he has ghostwritten mad hit singles so he has made a lot of money for the music companies. Pimp will always have my upmost respect for basically standin up for what he believed in and not being afraid to speak and say what was on hs mind and being musically gifted. He was tryin to tell yall now just like Pac was tryin to say that if we didn't start cleanin up our neighborhoods and holding these rappers accountable along with other things, then the rap music and the game would never be the same. We got udes wearing dresses , painting nails, I seen Lil Uzi Vert wearing a iced out choker, ad when I was comin up, you had to step your bars up and had to earn the respect ofthose that came before you and paved the way for you to dream and become the MC/artist that you were.

Pimp C gotta be one of the most underappreciated rappers/producers of all time. He made some of the grooviest beats, hell even threw in some guitar riffs in those country rap tunes; Not to mention his unique voice that is only outmatched by E-40.
@MaChao224 күн бұрын
As far as Southern hip hop producers go, Chad Butler was almost peerless. The only other one I would put in his league is DJ Paul and Triple Six Mafia, who more or less invented a whole sound to themselves that was unmistakably their own. That dark, lo-fi style, almost like the Black Metal of hip hop, is being emulated and imitated like crazy in today's era. The young boys from Florida and Southern hip-hop artists and groups in the Underground scene have created a second wave of 3-6 style beats and production. Lastly I must mention, while DJ Paul in large part gets the credit for innovating and creating that "gothic hip hop" style Juicy J is low key a fucking genius producer and laid down tracks just as good as Paul. Shit, Project Pat has talent at producing too, and Juicy has done a lot of beats on Pat's albums. Shit must run in the family, LOL (Murderers & Robbers is a FUCKING CLASSIC for those who know) But back to our man Pimp C. I brought up all that about Three Six because I wonder, did Pimp ever have a protege as far as his production? Someone who learned from him and got hot making their own stuff that was close to his sound. Shiiiit, to be honest I don't know of hardly anyone putting out instrumentals that have that distinct UGK sound and vibe - I got to believe that SOMEONE is out there tho, cuz if not that is just a fuckin' shame! Chad liked to incorporate soul and R&B samples quite often - the Isley Brothers were a favorite of his - and was never shy to throw in some guitar twang. He actually used electric guitar licks pretty often too! Definitely one of the innovators of that slow, crunchy country rap sound, the shit that makes you scrunch your face and go UNNNGGHH. But not in that corny ass Master P way! Sweet Jones had refinement and taste. Motherfucker wasn't slapping out no five note brass samples with a basic ass drum or handclap and just loop that shit endlessly - voila! You got a good anthem in 10 minutes, nah nah nah nah! (For the record I love Master P too, even if Trick Daddy's "Shut Up" blows that "Make Em Say.." beat out of the water. Manny Fresh made some shit that probably tops both of them - at least when it comes to the single tracks that are made to hit the radio. All of them do some better work on deeper cuts) But that ain't our guy, no sir. Pimp C hit some tempo changes in his beats - sections change and revert back, the music has structure. Another thing was he showed variety. The dark grimy beat over the record scratch loop on "Murder" is fucking killer, one of my all time favorites. The female backup singers in the chorus on "Pinky Ring" is a fabulous touch - you can almost see the cane and the white fur hanging off the pimp coat. "One Day" is a certified classic that was practically made to be screwed and chopped, and the funky pulsating rhythms on "Diamonds & Wood" are unlike any hip hop beat you ever heard before. Other personal favorites include "Throwed" and "Wood Wheel" but truth be told, he brought something special to every track he put down. He barely has any weak ones or throwaways that were basic in his whole catalog. He put dedicated time into every last track he put down and that speaks to his passion for the craft and work ethic. I sincerely hope someone will light the torch for Pimp C's production and make tracks with his influence stamped on them, it's a shame to let his beat craft and his impeccable ear for sounds and samples fall by the wayside. Best in class for the South, to my mind. I forgot one other, shout out 8ball & MJG they lay it down right as well. And don't tell me about Lex Luger or whatever 808 Atlanta sissy has his repetitive shit playing on the radio today. Boys don't even hold a candle to the Pimp - to quote him, you ain't one, "you a fairy." 😂
