I don't think neglect is the right word.... It's just a song about life and lost time. If anything he's neglected himself by not being able to spend the time with his boy. It's not like his son grew up just like him and that was payback... That was never the point. This song was more about how the Daily grind takes us away from what special it's not about a bad dad or anything like that

I've always liked this song, it's kinda depressing but uplifting at the same time. A father and son have no time for each other at different stages. Yet the son looks up to and loves his father, and the father loves and is proud of his son for being just like him.
