I'm glad you are teaching daughters about art and design at such an early age. Some below ask where are the toys, the posters, the trophies, the mess kids make but I say learning about the makings of a beautiful home for your famly or yourself is a more important, worthwhile lesson and they seem to enjoy it too. My father was a fire chief, I can't begin to tell you what he would have said about candles in a child's bedroom. He thought candles where only lit for birthday cakes. He was a wonderful dad, and I miss him everday.

1st of all, glad the fire was caught in time! The dresser looks great. The girls have such a sweet and beautiful bedroom. My dad was a painter by trade and taught me over 40 yrs ago to wrap my brush in plastic wrap or a bag if I had more painting to do by the next day. The gifts at the end were so thoughtful!

When painting furniture that “bleeds”, I find spraying a coat of shellac will seal the stain or tannins and lessen the number of coats of paint you will need to achieve a great result!

If the red comes through, you may need a shellac primer like Zinzer to cover it.

If you treat the bleed-through areas with spray shellac, you can stop it right away, and you won’t need so many coats of primer,

In the future, put a coat of shellac on the furniture pieces, before priming, to prevent bleed through. That said, this piece turned out beautifully.

Oh, I'm glad your daughter was fast acting to make sure that fire didn't get out of hand. It's very scary. We had a dresser fire as well. The lit candle on the dresser was knocked over by our curious cat. Fortunately, we were there to react quickly. But it did move fast. By the time my husband got back with the fire extinguisher, it had burnt my collectible barbies and started up the lace drapes. Needless to say, I rarely light candles anymore. Also, I wanted to say using a can of spray shellac to cover the bleed- through before you prime works wonders. Just make sure you let it dry before you prime. Otherwise, it can have a crackle effect. Which can be nice if it's wanted. But not so nice if not wanted. Anyway, thank you for sharing.

I think that might of been Walnut it has a reddish tint to it but that beside the point. Where you sanded from the fire I would of used wood filler fill in that gap in the wood. After it drys well sand it to be level. Also if your going to paint raw wood with a dark tint so it won’t bleed through. I suggest to get a shellac in a spray can n spray it all over. After that drys go n paint. You probably wouldn’t even have to prime it it’s your choice but it won’t bleed through. I suggest getting battery operated candles in the future. So sorry about the fire. Thank the good Lord you caught it in time. Enjoyed your video.

If you are going to use a diffuser, please be careful with essential oils around your cat...many essential oils can kill a cat. Piping Rock has a cedarwood essential oil that is safe to diffuse around cats plus it keeps moths and many insects away as well....just a recommendation. So glad you caught the fire in time! I've had 2 homes burn down. It's scary how fast it can spread. Now we do battery operated candles, or I will burn one, IF I am in that room the whole time. You could also buy a warmer to just set the candle on, so it melts and smells good, with no flame.

I had my parents mahogany dresser, I sanded and primed and painted twice and it was still pinkish…. It is the nature of the wood, I guess. We put some wallpaper stickers on it to disguise the pink blead through. We just let it go…. And dealt this the pinkish. It became my daughter’s dresser. This room for your girls, is super lovely. The next time you have a red/pink wood to paint after you sand if needed use spray shellac and that stops the bleed through. GingerChicRehab uses shellac quite a bit on her channel.

I have found Zinsser with Shellac primer is the very best to prevent any bleed through, whether from old stain, paint or oils. And I have painted a lot over the years. Half ammonia/half water cleanup, but I have found throwing away cheap brushes that I used to prime with is much better solution for me! 🥰

Per internet hickory sapwood lumber is pink in color and chemical oxidation changes the starches and sugars in the wood to a pink color. Until I looked it up, I thought it might have been cherry wood as there always seems to be a pink or maroon undertone to cherry wood furniture. Thankful you all and your home are okay. Something you can try , is use oil based shellac first before your primer. I had a mahogany table I redid many years ago-before furniture painting was popular. A professional painter friend told me about the shellac first trick.
