In this segment, I discover a problem with a recently installed barrel. I demonstrate how to slug the barrel with a piece of lead to measure internal dimensions. Ultimately, this barrel will be replaced with a new one. This one will go back to the manufacturer for their consideration. Getting a faulty barrel is extremely rare. In nearly fifty years I have had no more than 4 or 5 which were unusable.

Yes, I spoke with Jay, and we'll see what transpires. The barrel was made a few years ago, pre-fire, so I am not pressuring them at all. we'll see what transpires. I'm firmly in the "expect nothing and you're never disappointed" camp! WH

Good morning from the sunny south Okanagan, thanks once more for the very educational video. I've not seen it done before, though I understood the concept. All the best and good luck on your hunts this season.

Thanks a lot for your support. It's finally starting to feel fall-like. Enough so that I'm going to sight in a couple of rifles this afternoon. Been a bull bugling nearby for the last week or so (too small though). When they bugle during the night, I often dream of hunting elk. In my dreams, I'm much more successful than in real life! WH

Most European match barrels are lapped tight on the crown end on purpose . Someone chambered the wrong end most likely

As Rick stated, this blank was profiled by the maker. Typically, final lapping is done subsequent to profiling. I should also mention that lapping, as performed in most barrel-making operations, is seldom done to alter dimensions but is done to achieve the desired interior finish. In essence, it is often more of a polishing operation than a lapping operation. I am, of course, speaking in general terms here; I can't speak for individual makers. WH
