I am going rent a uhaul swap out engine with a 5.3, You think they notice?
@hendo3376 жыл бұрын
You're better off with the 5.3 than an 8.1, 8.1s make less power in stock form than a stock 6.0 and most 5.3s. There are nearly zero speed parts for the 8.1, only one company specializes in 8.1 performance for road vehicles. Raylar and their parts are ridiculously expensive. Other than that the Marine engine community uses them in some speed boats, even more expensive. I'd recommend swapping for a 6.0 if you want to do this plan with a rented moving truck. Other option is to rent an SUV like an Escalade or Denali and getting a 6.2.
@subcummins01346 жыл бұрын
hendo337 It all depends on application I guess. For speed build a 6.0. But I had a 5.3, 6.0, and a vortec 8.1. All in suburbans. For towing the 8.1 absolutely beat the crap out of the 6.0. It put it to shame. The 8.1 towed so much easier than the 6.0. And got better mileage while towing than the 6.0. Empty the 6.0 got just a little better mileage. For towing definitely the 8.1. I have a 12 valve cummins in that suburban now with a manual tranny. I had to do some upgrades to it to get it to tow as good as the 8.1 honestly. People really don't know enough about that engine in the towing world to understand how impressive it is. A torque monster. It's underrated on paper in that aspect. It puts the v10's to shame too. But I'm talking strictly towing.

What's more, when I'm on the freeway and I see a car trying to merge in and I have to room to get out of the way, I do so. It's not about what's legal, it's about what is going to allow the situation to be most safe, how about being nice to someone? You'll notice 18-wheelers do the same thing if they can. If I'm in the overtaking lane, and a car that wants to go faster is coming at me, as long as it's safe to do so, I let them pass. I don't stubbornly, passive aggressively sit there.

I end up in the service lanes because not because I'm trying to out-race someone or refuse to slow down. I end up there because there is an aloof driver with not willing or not able to allow me to merge. Not far behind them is usually an 18-wheeler who is going to have a hard time slowing to my speeds if I don't match theirs. I've never overtaken the person who refused to move over but I have had to keep my speed up in the service lane as not to cause cars to slam on their brakes. Get it?

A freeway on-ramp is 200 yards long give or take (most of the ones I frequent are far less)... Traffic is coming at a steady 65 to 75 mph and in order to merge, a person has to get up to the speed of the traffic. So yes, I've been into the service lanes more times than I can count because inconsiderate people such as yourself didn't have the common decency to allow me to merge in when there was enough room to do so. Sorry to compromise your cruise control, be a team player.

These 8.1L Big Blocks were not meant for HP, they were designed to pump out massive amount of NA low end torque and tow upwards of 12,000 pounds. On top of all that they can and will last well over 200,000 miles because with the large displacement they were never working the engine even when towing heavy loads. Something only the Americans can do, because back in the early 2000's this was extremely impressive. Don't be mad American cars do everything better.
