At the 2024 Spielwarenmesse (Toy Fair), during an interview with Tobias Lemke, I was able to look at and film a fascinatingly finely detailed 1:8 scale model of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR “Uhlenhaut Coupé” up close. The metal kit from Lemke Collection consists of more than 900 parts, which are already painted where necessary. When fully assembled, the model is 55 cm long and weighs around 7.5 kilograms.
The model of this legendary sports car was built twice in 1955 and was named by the then vehicle designer and chief engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut. Both vehicles were owned by Mercedes-Benz AG until 2022. One of them was auctioned by Sotheby's on May 5, 2022 for a record price of 135 million euros. According to the Mercedes-Benz AG homepage, the auction proceeds served as start-up capital for the non-profit scholarship and coaching program “beVisioneers: The Mercedes-Benz Fellowship”.
The 1:8 kit of the 300 SLR “Uhlenhaut Coupé” corresponds to the operating condition of 1956 and is scheduled to be delivered by Lemke Collection from mid-February 2024. After I keep being asked about the prices of the models I show - the kit has an RRP of 1198 euros.
