I actually love the way they're teeing up Kirk. With any abrupt recast, even many years later, people are going to bitch. However, if you ease them into it, it may be easier to swallow. The TOS series was before my time, but the TOS movies weren't. At this point I'm just happy to see an episodic Star Trek series keep going. If they can drop in some fan service with using old characters, I'm cool with that. Now, there may be a day when they recast Picard and I may feel differently, but I'm not that old yet.

This really reminds me of the children of Plato tos episode where Uhura is confiding in Kirk that he's always been a source of comfort for her, in such a lovely platonic (haha) way. That when she was scared while serving on the Enterprise, she'd hear Jim's voice over the comm and it would calm her down. I really like this scene, because we're seeing some basis for this dynamic - Jim being a calming presence when she's scared. I love it!

it was an alien living in the Deuterium, making people act schizo as it tried to stop them harvesting it. The ending was total BS too. They let a mentally ill Uhura order the ship to blow up a Star Fleet refinery because the voices in her head told her to.
