the moment you insert the reed into the chanter, the squeak turned into magic! great video! Greetings from Portugal

Hi David. Thankyou thankyou. I remember talking about this on the uilleann list a good few years, and here it is on youtube. I tried this, with slip made from 25mm cane and 70mm sanding block, giving a 1.5mm slip. I forced it over the staple with no groove cut, but when I forced the lips together the head split on one side. Next time I used a 54mm block giving a 1.1mm head thickness, and this time it went fine. Well, it went just like you said, and this is the best sounding reed I ever made.

I use white plumbers pvc tape tape around the bottom of the Reed to make it air tight before binding.

David, Your tutorials are very helpful, thank you. I have a new chanter that plays wonderfully all the notes except the bottom D. No matter how gently I play the bottom D always jump immediately up to the 2nd octave. Should I attempt to adjust the bridle or insert a tiny wire in the reed itself like in your tuning video?

Can I put reeds from other instruments in the place of uilleann pipe reeds and actually get a new interesting sound?

ok, probably a dumb question: where can I buy cane?

Hello! I like your videos, they are informative and nice! :) I have a question for you, that you might know an answer to. Where can I buy harvested arundo donax? I have been looking all over the internet, and I can't find anyone that sells dried arundo donax online. I will be using it to make reeds and experiment on making ancient instruments, if I can get hold of any. I live in Norway, so i'm not sure it's possible (or legal) to cultivate it myself. And no one in norway is selling this... At least not anything suitable for musical use. Any tips on where to look? Thanks!

Alexander, ontact Ted Anderson at; bigsurtapes@sbcglobal.net He cuts and sells cane especially for uilleann pipes and sells to well known pipe makers all over. he also knows what to cut and what works the best as he has years of experience at it and doesn't sell junk cane like some currently do, many of whom don't know the difference.
