It’s good to see the coins I grew up with, a look back in time for me. In the 60’s I tried to collect every date from 1900 to that year late 60’s, only farthing,halfpenny,all the way to the 2 bob bit. I couldn’t afford any higher. I get said extremely lucky when 40 years ago buy a box full of coins from Great Britain from XVIII Century begining with two Farthing William IV 1836 and 1937 and several from Victoria era with the most biggest penny than ever saw it before date 1857 copper VF condition plus several 1/2 pennies from 1841 to 1863 in addition several silver half crown I putted that box away many years ago because I was very sick so I found in my closet two days ago so I going to enjoy see what all having

Very interesting to see that it was pointed out that there were 960 farthings in a pre-decimal pound. The was a quarter farthing coin and 3840 of these in a pound, this must have been a cashiers nightmare.

Be careful when buying U.K. silver coins as pre 1920 silver coins contained .925 silver ( hence the term sterling silver) while after 1920 to 1946 it was only 50% silver content and after this date there is no silver in any currency that was meant for general circulation this includes most commemoration coins as well and if anyone tries to pass one off as silver ask to see the certificate of authentication, unfortunately all silver meant for circulation ie sixpence,shillings,two shillings (florins) half crowns , crowns and all modern currency is made from cupro nickel and the only reference to silver is the colour . If you want to collect silver just beware of fakes especially in crowns and half crowns,I’m sorry but I can’t comment on individual questions but there is loads of info on the internet to help with any questions you may have

The bird on the farthing is a wren, the ship on the half penny is the Mayflower, the shield on the penny is the british union flag. My neighbour's eight year old daughter has been given a metal detector, I've buried several Victorian pennies and a few sixpence and three penny peice in my garden I can't wait to see her face when she finds them.
