UK - British Rail around Newport and Cardiff

A little bit of nostalgia from the '80's. Taken during February and August 1988, scenes include shots taken at Cardiff Central showing classes including Class 56, 47 and 33. A short visit to Cardiff docks showing the 'Barry 10', the last derelict locomotives to be removed from the famous Woodhams scrapyard at Barry. The last sequence is taken at Newport and as well as numerous class 37's, there are examples of class 33 and a class 45 (110) on a farewell rail tour. Also look out for HST power car 43002 which had not long been named 'Top of the pops'. What was the world coming to!!!!

Used to love the run down nature of BR in the 80's. People who moan about UK trains today just haven't lived. Everything then was at least thirty years old and rattled or squeaked! Still it was all better than the glorified trams that now pass for trains.

The Peak(45110) at 09.43 Minutes was on a Railtour-To Fishguard & Return to Derby on 27/2/88,i was on the tour.

So was I ! She was worked top and tail with a Class 37 up the 1 in 50 grade from Fishguard Harbour to Trecwn MOD by the Peak. 45 110 "Medusa" stormed up the grade with ease, with the rear loco forbidden to provide assistance, unless specifically asked for. Then the Peak driver supercharged the brakes, and waited for the Class 37 to haul us back down the slope. However, the Class 37 was unable to release the train brakes. Next we heard two blasts on the Class 37 horn to summon rear end assistance from 45 110 "Medusa". All the Peak fans made some rude comments about "the Class 37 cannot even take the brakes off and roll downhill". Apologies to the Growler Group. Vic from Peak Army.

I remember on one day, a 3 car slam door DMU broke down at Bargoed Station, a class 37 had to be called out to rescue it, the train carried on with its timetabled journey with the 37 providing the power, seeing the clip between 10:54 and 11:37 reminded me of that

As I recall, this was about the only time I ever caught at DMU being dragged by a 37 on video, although I did see it a few times.

45 110 unofficially named "Medusa" is seen working back from Fishguard Harbour and Trecwn MOD with a Pathfinders Tour. I was on that train !

@@PhilThomasTrains Of course, I would have waved. But I cannot remember, for sure, which side of the train I was leaning out of. Plus not all photographers and videographers appreciate people waving. Had I known you were one of the friendly lot, I would have waved. Alternatively, if you had waved at me, I would have reciprocated, naturally. Massive camera eh, you do know that size is not the only measurement.......
