Swrve™ it not really a pain. My husband learned to drive in Birmingham, ok, it’s not London. But he’s a confident city driver. I learned to drive in a rural market town in Lincolnshire, I’m much less confident in the city, even after almost 30 years of driving. I wish I had learned to drive somewhere bigger, busier and bustling, rather than in a quiet town (which only had one mini roundabout in the entire town when I learned to drive. Of course it has lots of roundabouts now)

I remember just how difficult it felt when I first started driving (20 odd years ago). It seems you are doing something with your hands, feet and eyes all the time. I felt quite overwhelmed at the prospect of ever being a competent driver knowing I’d have to do everything and do it alone. As well as reading signs, watching other cars, being aware of cycles and pedestrians. Unbelievably it does eventually become second nature to depress a pedal, change gear and check your mirrors but I’m always very respectful of learner drivers. It’s a shame people forget that feeling when they pass their test and think it’s acceptable to toot their horn to a driver who is looking for a road name or gets in the wrong lane etc.
@Anonymous-fj2uo5 жыл бұрын
I wish I could like this more than once! It's so true, I passed September of last year and, even then, I remember freaking out at the thought of driving on my own! Driving in general was pretty scary for me, as a learner and as a new driver. I'm definitely a little more used to it now. I agree, people should have more compassion on the learners as we have all been in their shoes once.

Left shoulder, left mirror, center mirror, right mirror, right shoulder as they look for it on the test. But as if come home my new driving instructor says it's impractical as by time you've done all those checks, you miss the opportunity to pull out and all you need to check is centre mirror, right mirror and right shoulder. No wonder people struggle to pass when instructors can't agree.

1) Why should you check the left mirror when turning right? The back of the car is moving on a smaller radius, so you can't hit anybody. 2) Why should you check anything before indicating? It's an intention, but not an action. It's good to show your intentions early. Others can decide whether to let you start your maneuver or not.

@DriveLondon5 жыл бұрын
Hi Yes you will get a serious fault if you keep occurring the same fault multiple times. Usually this is when the mistakes is done more than 5 times. So same minor mistake 4 times will stay as 4 minors and same minor mistake done 5 times will become a serious. Also you need to consider the fault. This left blind spot check is not essential when moving off from the left and sometimes is not marked down as a mistake in the test, but as a safer driver an all round check is better then only checking the right. So like I said at the end of the test, somethings I have marked down are a little harsh but it's to get you the best result and make you a safer driver. Also sometimes examiners may have given 2 minors for the same fault but on the third same fault it may have been a serious fault. e.g: 1st fault - didn't check mirrors before moving but nothing there - MINOR FAULT 2nd fault - didn't check mirrors before moving but nothing there - MINOR FAULT 3rd fault - didn't check mirrors before moving but cyclist there - SERIOUS FAULT because there was a cyclist

left blind spot is unnecessary really; I never looked once to my left after pulling off during my driving test and I passed. Though it is 100% necessary if you're doing any of the parking manoeuvres.

If it were in my country (Poland) the examiner would say to turn right to a road where you can’t go, and ask you to park in the most tight place, meanwhile telling you how horrible beginner drivers are and how thrilled he would be to take their licences away, the attitude really helps out to pass this damn test. You raise a valid point and it's pretty much true for a lot of roads, for example most of the ones near my house were actually built in in the 17-1800s but what do you expect them to do about it? Just move the houses out of the way to make a wider road? Not possible or even slightly worth the trouble I'm afraid.
