In his first UK interview, the director of Malayalam cinema's most profitable film Manjummel Boys, speaks about helming the survival thriller, technicalities into the production, the current trends in cinema and what drives his vision as a storyteller. (Spoilers ahead). The movie is Chidambaram's second successful venture after Jan.E.Man, released in 2021.
Based on a true story, Manjummel Boys is set in 2006. It revolves around a group of friends who get into a daring rescue mission to save their friend from Guna Caves in Tamil Nadu, a perilously deep pit from which nobody has ever been brought back. The movie has an ensemble cast which includes Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, Ganapathi S. Poduval, Lal Jr., Deepak Parambol, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, Arun Kurian, Khalid Rahman, Chandu Salimkumar, Shebin Benson and Vishnu Reghu. Produced by Parava Films, it became the first film in the Malayalam film industry to earn more than ₹200 crores and set several box-office records, becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever surpassing the record set by 2018, as well as the third-highest grossing Indian films of 2024
