This is my 2nd winter since starting as self employed garden work. I was a bit worried as last winter, work was deadly slow, luckily been plastering since left school many years ago, so picked up few bits and bobs got me through. This year wont have time to do any skimming, 70% of my regular bi weekly clients have booked me through the winter with larger projects, extending beds, shrub cut backs and hedges, loads of those. Anyway have good day all.

Hello from America. You may not have to mown lawns in the winter. But you have so much more to do. Leaf cleaning. Tree trimming, pruning shrubs, hedges. Power washing driveways, window washings, gutter cleaning, garden remodeling, and more. And I’m sure I missed something’s..

Absolutely spot on as usual Rob. We've got 4 teams to supply work for up in Edinburgh. We exclusively do garden maintenance for 250 gardens on a 2 week basis and then project work from December to early March. For those starting out here are a few things we do to help us over winter. 1. Run a waiting list over summer and early autumn then add cusomters in over the winter months. 2. Aim to get mature gardens that need all year round work. 3. Customers that cut visits early get a higher rate in the spring to cover costs advertising for more work in September/October. If they leave then you replace with all year round customers. 4. Have high quality leaflets in vans ready to hand out in key target areas where we are already working. This will help pad out routes for the following year. 5. Collect as many one off jobs in the autumn as possible. Focus on strengths e g. We focus on fence repairs in January and February as this is the thing least affected by cold weather. Obviously every business is different and these points won't be applicable to all but might be of some help to those starting out 😊

They key is mature gardens for sure. Blowing leaf up until Christmas! Composing in Jan, wisterias in Jan/feb etc etc before you know it seasons started again.

Just had a thought after a customer asked if I would do a few hours for one of their friends, instead of buying them a Christmas present. I have enough customers which will give me work right through to the start of next season. But for new starters which haven't got that perhaps they could do an hourly rate for garden tides just through the winter period and offer it in a Christmas voucher format. Some people would probably get more out of that than a pair of socks. Have you ever heard of this being done, and if you like it could you put it about it might help some new starters through the winter.😂

I got your point, but you did say about the gardeners that say that if you're a proper gardener you have work all year round, you said you don't really do you! Do you find that so hard to believe or do you think they are lying? Because that's how it came across. You have made similar comments before. Hope you don't take this the wrong way. I don't think anyone is slagging you off or whatever when they say they that they are working year round. It's just true,if you do the whole variety of gardening. You have your niche, others have theirs. ATB

Mate I spent 15years working for myself as a gardener. Wish I had you videos when I started! Sadly arthritis means I've finished working. I was lucky in that the town I worked (and live in) has lots of older people, is fairly wealthy. But the key at this time of year is to say things like "I'll prune your Apple trees in the winter, "or" I'll give the lawn a scarify in the winter". Get them thinking about winter jobs and the fact you will still be coming in the winter. During the summer I worked 70+ hour weeks 7 days a week. In the winter because the customer was used to me coming on a Saturday or Sunday I was still working 50+ hours

Always great advice and reassurance for the less established businesses. Took me a long time to get to that point. Winter was always a stress when I had employees trying to get the next jobs booked in. So nice now it’s just me and a part time employee. I do fencing over the winter, more storms the better. Last year I didn’t stop because of all the blown down fences.

you may know we look forward to the end of the year, it becomes more of a break, not going at it like mad, it takes a long time to get to this stage, we have booked 4 weeks holiday this year, jan and feb we really quieten down so we can get things done, we are full until decimeter. taking bookings for Jan, Some will big themselves up saying "we never stop working" it all depends on the type of work, Domestic will be quiet, commercial can be more busier, unless you can clear snow, if there is snow on the ground it will stop most. Save Save Save is my advice (if you can)

Gardening Season coming to an end? More than that for me! Frightened? More than that for me! I'm sad!!! Because I retired in June and not wishing to leave my customers in the lurch half way through the season I've kept going, but stopped advertising months ago and not even taken more on by word of mouth or anything. I still have a strimmer to collect after new fuel pipes were fitted, Wolf Garten tools still in the packaging, six mowers (one still boxed), virtually new scarifier, roller and shredder, not to mention my hedging gear and all manner of hand tools. I could sell them in bundles or individually to those starting up or even with some of them start a bygones museum! But not just yet! What about my trusty X-Trail and trailer? No, not yet! Business cards, fliers and magnetics....no good to anyone those! Then there is my gardening library, some of those books belonged to my parents or have been gifts over the years, let alone those I have bought! Maybe my granddaughters that like to help me when we do our own gardens will put a few on their bookshelves and become fifth generation gardeners when they leave school? It's a good life! Weather can be tough, like some of the customers! Then there are the 'Before you go could you just....' ones. Then all the lovely ones of course! Not to mention the backache and the sore knees! Yep, it's a good life, enjoy it guys and gals, I'll still be looking in on your KZbin channels at the end of a hard days birding! I wish I was starting out again, but with the knowledge I've acquired over the years! I'll still be pottering in my own garden and those of family and friends, life wouldn't be the same without grit under my nails and a thorn to dig out of my thumb! This has been a bit of a Blow, no Moan, now I'll Go! Cheers Rob, I'll be watching!
