As Huldra said, the original song is from Fiddler On The Roof, about life in a poor jewish village in Eastern Europe, Reb Tevie being the main character. The eastern wall is a part of the synagogue. VP (arrangement by Layne Stein) was hinting at the sound of kleitzner music, the musical style that originates from that part of the world, clarinet being an important instrument in that setting. Both Layne and Eli(ezer) are of jewish origin.

they didn't put a religious spin on the song, they sang parts of the original version from Fiddler on the Roof, but added part of the "If I Was A Rich Girl" -version towards the end. it's originally from a musical, sung by a poor jewish milkman called Reb Tevye dreaming of being rich.

@@candicefontaine276 Fiddler on the Roof was a musical play originally staged in 1964 and made into a movie in 1971. Th character singing this song was named Tevya and Reb is short for Rabbi, or teacher, which what he wanted to be. I grew up hearing this song and Sunrise, Sunset and Matchmaker, Matchmaker just about all my life. The movie was on TV a lot when I was a kid.

The Song is from Fiddler On the Roof, a musical and a film. which is about a poor Jewish man in a little village, wishing he were a rich man. It's a very good film actually. Reb Tevya that's the name Tevya the hero, would have if he were a Rabbi, you need to understand a little bit about the Jewish language to understand that. Reb is short for Rabbi. and the way you would address him. Both Eli and Layne are Jewish. It's a language I learned at university. The song was slower and more religious sounding originally but here they've added in a bit of the Gwen Stephanie song where she combined it with something else.

I think it's Rav Tevya. Rav is a Hebrew honorific similar to Mister or Senor.

This story was from a cycle of stories written about the forced exodus/migrations when Imperial Russian expelled the Jewish people to go "beyond the Pale" - ie, from Ukraine, Moldavia, Poland, Belarus, Lithuania (known collectively as The Pale of Settlement - which had been the only place they were freely allowed (in Russia). People were forced out of their homes (1905) to find a new place to live: of course, losing almost everything they owned in the process. The properties vacated were then awarded to Russian citizens - particularly those who'd done well in war. Russia was dealing with a lot of civil disorder due to lack of housing, food and jobs. Vilifying and expelling the Jewish people was their attempt to deal with it. Don't miss Nothing Else Matters - even if you're not a fan of Metallica/metal. I'm not, and I think it's one of their absolute best. It's just stunning. Just released.
