In a recent statement, US President Joe Biden reiterated his plan for Israel, emphasizing the need for a credible plan to protect civilians in military action in Rafah, Gaza Strip. Lord Richard Dannatt, former head of the British, shares his opinion on this matter along with Rachel Johnson and Kevin Maguire. The discussion also touched upon the challenges faced by the UK in terms of defence spending and the upcoming US presidential elections.
Lord Dannatt acknowledged that the conflict in Gaza has reached a critical point, with an alarming number of civilian casualties. He highlighted the inherent problem in the situation, as Hamas seeks the destruction of Israel, while Israel aims to eradicate Hamas. It is in this context that President Biden is likely intervening, signalling to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu that he may have gone too far. Lord Dannatt emphasized the need for a credible plan to protect civilians amidst the ongoing conflict.
Shifting focus to the UK's defence and military budgets, Lord Dannatt expressed concern about the unstable global environment, particularly in Europe. He stressed the threat posed by Putin and Russia, citing the need for increased defence spending to deter further aggression. While NATO recommends member countries spend at least 2% of their GDP on defence, Lord Dannatt argued that the current situation warrants even higher spending, suggesting 2.5% to 3% of GDP.
