UK Pelican Crossing: Plessey Mellor, PEEK Elite CLS & Full Array LEDs Pelican on Skellingthorpe Road

Here we have a Pelican Crossing with some unique additions to it. First off, with there being an over head signal at a pelican crossing, I assume it’s so drivers can see around the bend in the road as there are no hills or bridges near this crossing.
The second unique feature to this crossing is the two LED PEEK Elite road signals and one having Full Array LEDs which are the fading LEDs, something you don’t see very much of anymore. Going back in time on Maps this crossing used to have two Full Array LED road signals before the other one got replaced with a PEEK Elite with CLS lenses.

Now that's something I've never seen before... fading LEDs to mimic bulbs and a flashing amber after a red, that than turns into green...

Really? These types of crossing are called Pelcian crossings, there quite common in the UK. And yeah Full array is the name of the LEDs that fade.

@@UKLCSandT Nope, we don't have such arrangements in The Netherlands ;) Fading LEDs really are rare and I can't remember ever having seen ones that do here. How they do work? Do they just have circuitry on board that ramps the current up and down or do they switch on (and off) more LEDs as the intensity needs to increase or decrease? I think we don't have the red > flashing amber > green sequence as we usually only provide such sequences (without green that is) when a junction with lights is switched to 'out of service'. I have no idea how many junctions with lights actually do that in the UK, it's already quite rare in surrounding countries, where (for example) Belgium is already different as they hardly know (or not at all) junctions with dynamic lights, where these are extremely normal in The Netherlands. So in Belgium, it's very normal to encounter a junction with lights in the dead of night, with no cross-traffic in sight for miles, but the junction just running a standard sequence instead of responding to actual traffic.

There are some pelican crossings where I find it makes no difference in terms of safety to install a zebra lol
