I think he's responded to this in a comment jeering that Liz Truss' video could be a KZbin Short saying that he'll go into depth analysing _why_ it went so wrong. Definitely keen to watch that video as I've heard lots of competing theories as to why she thought it would even work, so it'll be interesting hear OP's take.

@@pip1723 He inherited a deficit of £160 bn, 9% of GDP. The mix of public spending cuts and tax rises might have been different, but there was no alternative to fiscal retrenchment. The coalition govt halved it, while growth was faster and unemployment fell earlier and by more than in our European peers; banks and banking regulation were fixed.

Cameron played the game on easy mode; he had the press on-side in 2010, 2014, and 2015, despite his dubious and often nonsense policy promises (many of which he never delivered), and he still struggled in all three (albeit 2015 was in hindsight easier than expected). 2016 was when the tide really turned against him; Tory staffers in the Remain campaign were shocked when they actually had to face a hostile press. He gambled compulsively and lost.
@faramir

It was not easy to deal with a budget deficit of 9% of GDP. And he managed a coalition govt of 2 parties more competently than his successors could manage with one.

@@iielysiumx5811 No, you have to remember the economic mess he inherited. The budget deficit was 9% of GDP. Something like 30% of public spending was being paid for by borrowing rather than taxation. And in the first year after he took office, oil and commodity prices took off, raising our import prices, and the European debt crisis exploded, hitting our exports. The UK economic record compared favourably with the rest of Europe in 2010-16. Sure there was a price to pay in terms of the quality of public services. But the greater price was that the Tories had done well enough to win the 2015 election on their own, after which the pressure for the EU referendum could not be resisted, and that Labour had had its Corbyn spasm, meaning that support from that side for EU membership was pallid.

Something the Lib Dem’s especially have never and likely will not be forgiven for and rightly so They betrayed almost everything they stood for to get into government, maybe they thought they could moderate Cameron? @faramir
@faramir 24 күн бұрын
Yup. Budget deficit of 9% of GDP. 30% of public spending covered by borrowing rather than tax. So sensible to look for revenue raising measures which are reasonably egalitarian. The loans for tuition fees are repaid depending on subsequent income, and those who pay them in full will have earned far more than the average for their non-graduate peers. The university education which allows them to do that is still subsidised. However, the interest rate is unfair and needs resolving.

The big problem, as became clear under May later, is that the right wing ERG nutters would never have trusted any (moderately sensible) deal brought back by a Remainer. They would have distrusted everything as Cameron trying to water down Brexit. With Labour and the LibDems voting against all the deals, he would have had as much trouble as Mrs May in getting something through parliament. The only scenario which might have been different is had he not scored the own goals that she did in the 2017 election campaign. The public had just rejected his policy in the referendum. You wouldn't expect a Conservative PM to implement a programme of nationalisation, or a Labour PM to act on a referendum privatising the NHS.

Right? Austerity has never and will never work, and didn’t in the UK. The lack of investment has crippled our public sector. They couldn’t invest, they couldn’t innovate, they couldn’t solve problems as they arose, their technology is out dated and it’s all run inefficiently. And it’s all thanks to Cameron’s government
@Wolf_of_Small_St
@Wolf_of_Small_St 5 ай бұрын
At 4:45, while I do agree that there were some alternatives to Austerity, the use of the Attlee government as an example is very disingenuous. British governments immediately after the war were funded in large parts by American Marshall Aid, receiving the largest portion of this of any country. They also received a large sum of money in the form of the Anglo-American loan of 1946, engineered by Keynes, while the Americans took over some of the military commitments that were the responsibility of the British Empire previously, in particular the containment of communism in Eastern Europe. It was that which allowed the British government to undertake the programmes it did on housebuilding, the NHS and the nationalisation of many industries. Domestically the Attlee government DID impose a degree of austerity, hence the reason that rationing continued well into the 1950s whereas it was removed much earlier than that on the continent. So while your point may be valid, the example really isn't here.
@politicoteacher
@politicoteacher 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. You're right, of course, that there was a peace dividend, but the Attlee government also borrowed to invest, which meant that borrowing went up in cash terms but down as % of GDP because the economy expanded. There was 'austerity' in the Attlee years, but this was about constraining private consumption to help deal with a balance of payments problem - the term isn't applied in the same way now.

They think the purpose of austerity is to save money when instead it actually ends up costing more. Austerity and tax increase makes sense to balance day to day spending, but austerity on public investment ends up costing the country dearly in the long run.

Why do these politicians always blame the people for a Hung Parliament? People WANT a government that works. Which is why it is BETTER to FORCE politicians to COLLABORATE and Come to a CONSENSUS on policies to enact. We all have jobs. All have scenarios in which we PREFER to do our jobs. But reality for the most part will not give us that. SO WORK WITH WHAT YOU HAVE! John Mccain, a US Senator, has collaborated with people opposite his aisle. His beliefs. They were able to make compromises. Because there was only one mission: To help better the lives of your constituents. Just do that and stop clinging for a Majority!

I always think its best to measure a prime minister with the cards they are dealt at the start of their premiership. He inherited a huge budget deficit and an economy severely on the ropes. If he had carried on spending at New Labour levels, we would have seen downgrades in UK debt ratings much worse than we saw and the need for worse austerity down the line. It's also worth noting that New Labour didnt spend in the right areas. They could have brought back council housing and invested heavily in new homes, but they didnt. Instead opting for expensive and inefficient housing associations. New hospitals were built using expensive loan back schemes which NHS trusts are still stuck paying millions towards even today. The government during Brown was paying money hand over fist to put sticking plasters on society's issues which they had failed to fix. Cameron didn't really help but I dont agree that he had many other options.

This is probably controversial. But I believe that David Cameron is probably one of the most overhated and underrated UK PM. He kicked the economy back in gear. Now Cameron is often criticised because of austerity and I understand that but I personally think that was the right way to go. The alternative was worse. He modernised both his party and the UK in many ways like same sex marriage for an example. He formed a coalition with the Lib-Dems and held it together for 5 years which I believe he doesn't get enough credit for at all. The EU referendum criticism I do not even understand. There was a movement in the UK to leave and it effected his governance of the country so he gave the country its choice and the people took that choice. Remember David Cameron wanted to remain in the EU and campaigned heavily for that. The fault in leaving the EU should be with Nigal Farage and Boris Johnson who capitalised to the Euro septic wave and won. I think David Cameron is unfairly criticised for far too much. He was not perfect and I have problems some of his policy like Libya. But on the whole I believe he is one of the best prime ministers since the war.

National debt is necessary for a thriving economy. All it is is a tally of the money injected into the economy by government spending, minus money taxed out of the economy. Post-Keynesian policies have been proven to work! Government spending may in the short term boost Aggregate Demand, causing demand pull inflation, but in the long run, will boost aggregate supply, which increases the economic capacity! And furthermore, if there is a fair tax system in place, the money can be distributed equally.
