Ireland have set the precedent - defining that they are not asylum seekers if they come from a safe country - something that many of us have been saying for some time. Following this, the UK Government needs to grow a backbone and declare France (no, all EU countries) as a safe country - all those arriving claiming asylum should be returned to the EU as by definition, they can't be asylum seekers if they have come from a safe country.

How would NI loosing access to the single market benefit it, are you forgetting most of the public in NI wanted to remain so a border on the island would be against their interests and would break the GFA along with breaking the Windsor deal. Since the UK can be considered a safe country its fine to return them, it isn't against EU rules to do so. By behaving like this the UK would loose any leverage with France because you can't expect them to stop migrants crossing the channel when the UK is enabling the same. There are far more migrants waiting to come to the UK from France than will be leaving to come to Ireland. The UK wanted to use the border issue in Ireland to try to force the EU to give in to their demands and now again the UK is trying to single out Ireland to pressure France, the tories have forgotten that international diplomacy only works through cooperation not coercion.

Something they can do, because there is no border. NI would benefit from a border, because then they wouldn't be treated differently from the rest of the UK, because of where the border is now. NI is not getting the benefits the rest of the UK gets. It was the EU that wanted a border in Ireland. The reason the UK went on about an invisible border between NI and Ireland. Was because they didn't want NI to be treated differently which it is being, because of where the UK was made to put border. If what you say about Ireland being able to send them back to the UK is true, then so can the UK send them back to France. You said the UK is a safe country, so is France. If it was possible to send them back like you say, the UK would have already done it. You said if we behave like this we can't expect the French to stop illegal migrants coming to the UK. Frankly, I won't return to the UK, except in a box. As a British citizen, I have fewer rights than many migrants in terms of housing and concessions. I find it pretty disgusting actually, especially as the UK, unlike most countries in Europe, has free healthcare for all.
