@@antiwufei553 Great Danes and Chihuahuas are the same species as well but I don't think you'd reccomend breeding them, would you? Any individual organism apart from identical twins and natural clones that occur in a few organisms are genetically separable. The point in this case isn't that the DNA of the organisms is too far apart that it prevents them from producing viable offspring. Domesticated animals are generally less intelligent, breeding them would lead to offspring that isn't adapted to the niche that the feral ones are, disrupting the ecosystem that they are part of. Also domesticated animals are often prone to certain diseases and ailments due to overbreeding.

Let's look at this from a different perspective for a moment. We have two types of cat in the UK, which can interbreed and produce fertile offspring. The British feral cat, _Felis silvestris catus_ has been here in the UK at least 2000 years, whereas the subspecies, _Felis silvestris_ has been here a few thousand years more and presumably spent at least two millennia cross breeding with feral _silvestris catus._ So we are really looking at _breeds_ here and setting a preferred phenotype for the individuals that live in a specific area. There is just as much variation between _catus_ breeds as there is between British feral cats and the Scottish wildcat. The fact that the greatest threat to its existence is interbreeding suggests that it isn't really a species at all, and the only factor that contributed to its differentiation was geographic isolation. The reason why I mention this is that the genes for the specified 'Scottish Wild Cat' characteristics undoubtedly exist within the common _catus_ genome, which means that what is being touted as preservation of a 'species' is more likely to be the creation of a breed that looks like a 'Scottish Wild Cat' is *meant* to look but may have no more direct familial connection to the actual article than your average fireside moggy. Which is fine, if that's what you want to do, _as long as you do not harm animals in the process._ This conservational beauty competition should not be an excuse for culling our native feral population, who have been here for millennia and have as much right to be here as their (kissing) cousins.

Speciation is a difficult thing. Populations of glaucous-winged gulls will hybridise with herring gulls (or other species) where colonies exist side by side: are they therefore just different 'breeds' of gull? Unless the breeding colonies are adjacent, they don't interbreed. Equally, grizzly bears will breed with polar bears and produce fertile young. There are other examples. There are times when we have to admit that we don't understand all the subtleties in the natural world. I beleive that generally, a wildcat will choose to mate with a wildcat and if there are sufficient around, I doubt the ferals will get a look-in. At least let's give them a chance to flourish as they are and have been for milennia.

Their behavior is very different though. It would be a great loss to lose the Scottish Wildcat which is adapted to their environment and have been there for 10 000 years. It is a subspecies of the European Wildcat, but they are both closely related to the domestic cat. Inspiring as always! Do you know if any studies have been done on potential competition if lynx were to be reintroduced? I know that their size difference allows for different prey use, but could we see a situation such as in Yellowstone when wolves killed/displaced a lot of coyotes? That was fine in Yellowstone because coyotes have a healthy population and are still thriving, but I would worry that a newly introduced lynx population would destabilize the tiny wild cats if the population weren’t robust enough yet

I think in Europe wildcat & Lynx coexist, but conditions are different to that of UK… given the nature of the two animals I think they’d rarely interfere with one and other unless resources were scarce. One thing that kind of bothered me throughout the video was the talk about inbreeding, because that's not what's happening. It's actually quite the opposite. The problem isn't inbreeding, it's outbreeding. Inbreeding is when individuals that are too closely related create offspring, which "concentrates" harmful genes and makes the offspring less ecologically fit. In the case of the Scottish wildcats on the other hand two species that are too DISTANTLY related produce fertile offspring and as a result the beneficial genes of the native/better adapted species are diluted.

It is critical for the survival of the Scottish Wildcat that they do. It’s not only americans who sees domestic cats as contentious, here in Norway the wild bird organisation have tried to warn people about how much cats roaming free outside threatens our bird populations. But people don’t listen to this as it is inconvenient and they are so used to doing it that way. In Britain studies have shown that well fed domestic cats kill even more wildlife than those who are not. I don’t think there is any other cat species who behaves this way except for the domestic cat, and I believe it is us humans thousands of years ago who have influenced them/bred to keep killing even if they don’t need food. But while there is no knowing for certain why, it is not a trait that would serve any wild cat. Nor our increasingly fragile ecosystem.

@@antiwufei553 I forgot to mention in my earlier comment that I am aware that older publications do regard the African/Asian, European, and Chinese mountain cat as subspecies of each other. I have always seen the domestic cat regarded as a separate species in older publications however. I have recently seen more recent publications regard the domestic cat as a subspecies of the African wildcat though. For the sake of comparing the most contreversial members of the genus Felis in terms of taxonomy to the genus Canis, if one looks into forums dedicated to canine conservation, one will find that the taxonomy of the genus Canis is also in deep flux! Although most taxonomists regard domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) as a subspecies of grey wolf (Canis lupus), not everyone agrees with this view. I have seen the domestic dog regarded as Canis familiaris. Don't even get started on dingo taxonomy because people will fight like dogs about dingo taxonomy! Last thing I want to say about animal taxonomy in general is that there are many animals that are considered different species that are completely interfertile (able to produce completely fertile offspring regardless of sex). Such examples include the genera Ursus and Canis. Given that, it would be tricky to assign definitive taxonomy to the cats we have been talking about as they all are very closely related, and having such similar overall ecologies certainly does not help in the matter either.

My granny used to have a cat called Gargamel, it was fat and it looks incredibly similar to the wildcats. It’s strange how similar they are considering that domesticated cats originated from North Africa. The question is maybe still out whether or not these are actually a native species or domesticated cats that had simple adapted morphologically to the Scottish highland environment. I guess it depends when domesticated cats were introduced to the U.K. which I’d bet was Roman times. The first Roman invasion was around 40 AD. So the cats could theoretically of had 2000 years to adapt to the Scottish environment.

There are also big behavioral differnces as noone have been succsessful at taming the Scottish Wildcat (both in the past and the present) while their relatives from North East Africa clearly were.

Don't get me wrong, i like the work and the idea. But isn't dying off of certain species and creation of new ones simply natural? Succession of better adopted individuals?

I’ve been watching the KZbin videos regarding the support of native wildlife and the proposed introduction of species such as the lynx, bears and bison into the UK. Lots of luck. The problem of domestic hybrids with the Highland wildcats will not be solved unless the habit of putting the cat out at night is enforcibly abolished. If a female wildcat is in estrus a handy tomcat will step up to the plate. The idea of introducing species such as the lynx, bears and bison into an area of such a large human per square mile population is laughable.

If you have your own wild cat why are britts bringing otheres in? Domestikate a few of these if one escapes there will be no mutants.

Great story and i hope it’s very successful. I do have one problem and that’s the soft approach to the wild domestic cats. To vaccinate them and sterilise, then let them go is defeating the purpose of the whole project. Surely these domestic cats are going to eat the food that the wild cats are eating. Then there’s the problem of recapturing the feral domestic cat. Waste of time and energy not to mention money.

Two things. 1) UK as one of most eco barren places on earth is a problem for all nature with current rewilding projects starting to scratch that surface. 2) When I did Biology 'A' level and Zoology and Biochemistry 50 years ago, we distinguished between closely related species according to producing fertile offspring. On that basis, domestic cats and Scottish wild cats are the same species. If you tried to ban humans from Finland coupling with people from Namibian Desert, you'd be slammed as racist. Surely, the same principle applies. In a million years, they might have evolved into different species (old definition), but 10,000 years merely allows characteristics to emerge. Eg, Dutch people are tall, northern Europeans process cow milk, northern people lost skin pigments to process sunlight but also became vulnerable to sunburn. Recover a broader range of ecosystems in UK and, maybe the cats will stay separate, but don't go down the slippery slope of racial purity. Hybrid mongrels are more genetically diverse and healthier than isolated small communities

Domestic cats should be banned in the UK! All cats should be mandatory to be spayed and it comes out of YOUR pocket you wanted the cat accept responsibility and stop helping the species wipe other species off the planet! If your really desperate for cats then only breeders should have cats that can reproduce and they should be closely monitored and have to complete training!

Domestic cats and Scottish wildcats are literally the same species. Only difference is a physical appearance and 10000 years.

@@Based_Gigachad_001 Your a 🤡! The way you say that with such confidence despite never actually researching that yourself! Domestic cats are related to African wild cats not Scottish Highland cats in fact Cats were pets before Scotland existed! Maybe actually research the crap coming out your mouth, might help you in the future! Thanks and have a great day!

Here's the problem, the Scottish Wild cat is not a native wild animal, its just domestic cats that have filled a niche that was empty because the Lynx are gone.

You think so? True wildcats seem very different to domestic cats. They're wildcats in europe that certainly aren't domestics gone feral.
