you said about the accommodation being more expensive than flats, but because unis normally provide tenancies that suit the academic year (eg, 40ish weeks long running from september to july), you end up paying less in total. most undergrads move into a private rental in second year, and even though per week it'll be cheaper, you normally have to take out a full 52 week tenancy so it turns out to be more expensive per year. like many undergrads, i went home over the summer so had to pay three months rent for a flat i wasn't using.

+Georgina Wood Great point! I also figured it's partly because of the convenience in such a highly competitive city for housing :)

Also tend to get tied into the contract of a lease for a whole year, what sometimes some do during the summer is provide them for the people going to conferences as well (or did when I went to one in Leeds, forgot the term used for a person that goes to a conference but are sometimes used for them as well.

In the late 80's in Aberdeen Robert Gordon's had a bunch of flats near the top of Holburn St. Utter dives. Two flats shared a toilet, so it was never cleaned. No showers, but you were allowed a free one at the Student Union in Schoolhill! Windows let in sooo much wind, place was always freezing. Cheap as chips though. Now they're posh flats, Skene House.

+unixnerd23 Wow! My student dorms were definitely not this nice haha 16 girls shared 3 toilets, 3 sinks, and 2 showers. I was also in a room about this size with 2 other girls which was legally nor allowed due to the fire codes. We had heat, but no air con. It was still a fun time though! :D

there are usually also cheaper accommodations available for students that don't have the kind of means to afford a flat like this. they're usually around £500 pcm and they're usually a bit less modern, with a bit of a "renovated prison" vibe, only have single beds and shared bathroom facilities (though there's usually 2 bathrooms per hall) one oven, stove and fridge as well as a washing machine (sometimes) and the microwave toaster and kettle. The upside to them is they're cheaper and you'll have fewer flatmates (I only had 3 while in the more expensive halls you'll probably be sharing with 7 other people). They still have all your bills as part of your rent. My flatmates were dicks that liked to keep the heaters on full blast all night so it felt like walking into an oven any time we got up and they couldn't turn a plug socket off to save their lives. as a result we'd get billed extra for using more than we needed to (even me and Maria even though we weren't guilty). But if you properly ration you amenities and don't hog the shower it should work out at a fairly manageable cost. The biggest downside I found was that I hated my flatmates and wasn't allowed to leave or transfer to another flat even when they were writing bullying comments about me on the fridge, keeping me up with loud predrinks and after clubbing parties and just generally cold bitches, and the one I did like was never in as she hated them too and chose to commute to class from home instead just to avoid them. I wound up spending most of my time at my boyfriend's place in the expensive halls. But chances are you won't have the same troubles going to uni here.

+RL Gill Ugh. I'm so sorry to hear about your awful flatmates! How horrible. I've had flatmate issues too. Never fun and always super awkward. Yeah I know there are different costs which is why I included the websites in the description. I was shocked at how fast the prices changed though! 2 years ago the same flats that are like £600 now were £400 when Joe and I looked at them. Obviously we didn't end up living there because we have our kitties. Also, in this flat they didn't have any control over the heat. I think one of the main reasons people pay the higher cost is because of the crazy high housing competition here. When did you go to Uni? Was in here in Edinburgh?

I've stayed at Napier's student accommodation a few times, but only for 1 week at a time on a vacation let. I didn't stay in one like in this video but rather the ones on Reigo Street which were certainly cheap enough but not cheerful enough for staying in for any significant length of time. If I was a student needing accommodation for a term (semester) at a time I'd be looking elsewhere, something like what you get in this video would be fine. The price is about right considering Edinburgh is an expensive city to live in. Fortunately I didn't spend much time in the flat apart from eating and sleeping, so it was perfectly sufficient for my needs and much cheaper than an Airbnb or the Premier Inn 2-3 minutes away on the main road. My flatmates were all friendly so that certainly helped.

Thank you so much for your videos! I have seriously considered applying to the University of Edinburgh and have wanted to for the longest time. I'm considering on studying in the states for a while and then transferring for postgraduate? It'd be nice to have some education under my belt so I can hopefully get a higher paying job when I travel over to Scotland. Any advice on cost and job market? I know tuition is going to be a lot, but I'd like to at least have a stable job that can cover living costs.
@SonnieTravels7 жыл бұрын
+Kirsten Claire That's so awesome! Tuition is Scotland is way less and more affordable than in the US. Just make sure you don't go through an American university to study abroad. Apply directly to the university in Scotland (or wherever). Uni of Edinburgh is much more expensive than other universities in this city, but it's because they're so well known. You can find the exact cost of tuition on their website under the program/major you're interested in (it's different for each one). The job market is Edinburgh is amazing because of all of the tourism. Unemployment here is only 3% (last time I checked). But it obviously depends on the field you'd like to work in too. If you want to work and study at the same time, I'd recommend going part time. It's really hard to do your post grad and work. My husband and I both tried it and had to quit. Instead, we took out extra loans to cover our cost of living. There are other European countries were tuition is either free or only a couple hundred euro even for foreigners. So you may want to look into that too. :) Let me know if you have any other questions or if there's a video you'd like me to make :) And good luck with everything! I hope you do get to come here.
@KirstenMongie7 жыл бұрын
I wasn't aware of how cheap it actually could be! I will definitely look around at other universities just in case. Studying abroad can be a little bit too expensive sometimes. Thank you so much for all of your advice! This'll be helpful as I start making decisions in the next year of so.

Also not forgetting that its also dependant upon if its the local council (don't know if its the same with Scotland) but in Leeds in particular there's a fair number of them that are run by the Leeds City Council and any colleges or Uni's (I think they're limited to the two Universities) pay to use them (occupy flats of them) to offer to students, so the students will then pay the University (I think that's how it works from memory, though I stayed in a University owned halls of residences, namely Kirkstall Brewery the biggest in the entire country, it's huge! Practically like it's own student village almost lol)
@jeremysmith545657 жыл бұрын
Then in leeds there was this specialised place offering the more from private landlords for students in Headingley, I think it was called Unipol but don't quote me on that (may have changed it's name too since I was there as it did finish back in 2008). Also with the regulations of how you can use them it's dependant upon the University's health & safety (for the University owned ones that is I know that much) so you get of course the dreaded early morning fire drills usually (for KB this was the case) in the 2nd week when you get back lol.
