Speaking as a guitarist, this guy just stuns me. It's the grace notes that kill me. Pick a beat, do it so well that you just don't need to do more, and THEN these wonderful little grace notes pitter-patter their way in. It's mesmerising. My head bobs around in funny ways when listening to this :O)

Virgil Donati is not just a legend but a standard for drumming. When someone ask you how good you can play, a logical answer should be, " About 0.015 Donati". This gives them an indication of how good you are. I saw him live and the guy is just a perfected living rhythmic miracle.

Cannot stop watching Virgil........For some strange reason, i can tap my foot in 4/4 over ANY of his tunes and keep time. Even if it strays off, i can focus through it. I imagine Virgil does this for a living.....[insert raucous laughter here]. You cannot develop forward in rhythm without forgetting about the past attempts. There is NO ONE better at this, than Virgil. I am watching this remarkable session on my couch drinking Coopers beers.
@hazardeur Жыл бұрын
you probably mean 1/8's but that's nothing special, that's basically what the hats play and they are the number one measure for other musicians to understand timing so that's what's it for. if he plays someting that's not 4/4, you can't tap to it in 4/4 to it, that's not how it works.

7:24 I've always been uncomfortable with listening to the shift between straights and triplets. I don't know if I dislike it or simply haven't grown accustomed to it. In some way it's really cool. A "trick" if you will. But it's been 15 years since I started playing, and that shift never really sounds right when it's emphasised like this. In a beat where it's accompanied or somehow camouflaged, you can make it sound more natural, but otherwise it really throws me off. I really like polys and interesting patterns, so I dunno if other people experience this or if I'm just being weird.

I met Donati listening Ring Of Fire and Planet X. He knows how to make the technique match with the art. It's beautiful the way he plays Rock songs and he is the best Metal drummer I saw. We know there is a lot good drummers, but Virgil lived a life for drums and, taking his severe studies so serious, it allow him to get an highest level. In the past I thought he was just another good drummer, but I got the true: He deserve to be the best and I believe he is.

I get the feeling that both you and Dave Weckl could become rich just by posting videos of you playing for the next 20 years.
