I planted a Chilean Wine Palm this afternoon, in my vegetable garden. It is one foot tall. I know I'll be an old woman before it is as impressive looking as this beautiful specimen, but that's okay. This is my own farm and my sons will inherit it, when I'm gone. The fact that it's in the veggie garden means it will get plenty of water and nutrients, and it won't be forgotten!

Fantastic, what a beautiful idea! They really are a special legacy plant and I've also got one I've grown from seed back in 2016 too so whatever size you're starting at, it's all about the journey isn't it. I hope it continues to thrive and really become a special feature on your farm.

Hi and thank you very much! Butia Eriospstha do seem very tough but to be honest you’re completely right and Jubaea are the most cold hardy in my opinion, in terms of the absolute minimum temperatures they can take and how low they can go without damage. They’re amazing palms 😃

Thanks for all your updates and videos that keep us going through the winter. I have a question. I have newly acquired Chilean wine palms which I was told by the guy that’s grew them that they were about a year old. Should I put them in the ground or should I wait until they’re a little bit bigger I will obviously give them winter protection if I put them in the ground thanks George for all your advice. Will
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Will and thanks for your comments. Personally I’d grow the palm on in pots until the base has fattened up a bit. Unfortunately they are slow but a bit of TLC while it’s young will give it the best chance when you do plant it out. If it’s a sheltered spot though and you’ve got more than one, it might be worth trying one with protection on standby, it’ll certainly grow faster during the summer months when it’s in the ground.

Great job 👏🏻, in Victoria British Columbia which is similar growing conditions to you I’ve lost a jelly palm last year due to our constant drizzle winter weather out on the west coast. Any advice? Should I cover the other jelly Palm just with a tarp? Leaving lots of air flow as we rarely get to 0 degrees all winter here. Any advice appreciated. Thanks. Will.
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Will! They are a palm that’s not quite as hardy as the numbers suggest in a wetter climate in my experience but they do seem quite variable. Is it an option to build an overhead shelter maybe? I’m not sure if the tarp would be the best option unless it definitely wasn’t touching the palm as it could trap moisture in. Keeping the rain off would help for sure, hopefully it’s in quite well drained soil too. I think the Jubaeas are definitely a lot tougher than Butias but hopefully either should do well long term where you are 😃

great video, bit of advise if you can please. got a phoenix palm in ground been wrapped since nov do you think ill be safe unwrapping it now. also got yucca filifera and baccatta in pots. can they go out we are in notts..thanks
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Simon! I’d definitely unwrap the Phoenix now but keep the fleece to one side in case we get any more freezes. Personally I wouldn’t recommend wrapping palms all winter, they really need the airflow around them otherwise the humidity can lead to rot so only wrap them when they really need it. As for the Yucca Filifera, I had one and it didn’t make it a few years back, even with good drainage so I think they need really good drainage, full sun and potentially overhead cover to survive our winters. It could just be that our part of the world is too wet as I know they’re said to be very hardy. I don’t have any experience of Baccatta unfortunately, if you’re not certain then bring it out but be prepared to protect if there is a freezing spell.

Me alegra que hayas disfrutado el video y estoy de acuerdo en que Araucaria y Jubaea podrían chocar en algún momento en el futuro, pero era el único lugar para plantarlas y espero podarlas con cuidado para permitir que ambas prosperen. Love Jubaea's! How do you find the Jubetia (hardiness/growth rate) that you mentioned at back of garden?? I am intrigued about this cross of a pal. Many monkey puzzles here in the Pacific Nortwest.. they get HUGE. Lastly, Arbutus Pacific Madrone are native to the Pacific Northwest - beauty broadleaf evergreens. Awesome trees. Looks like you have an Arbutis Unedo?? I love those just the same.

I can only comment on my experience but the Jubutia has been faster at putting out leaves than either parent and is certainly tougher than a Butia. I’ve seen some pics of the giant monkey puzzles, they’re incredible things! I’ve got one Arbutus Unedo then an Arbutus × andrachnoides hybrid 😃

Amazing collection of exotica. Your monkey puzzle will completely overtake your small garden. Here in vancouver canada there are many now over 40’ high and 25’ across. @GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 3 жыл бұрын
@@jubaeas Hi and thank you! Honestly, it will take years to get like that and I'd be happy if it did! They're amazing trees and will eventually get much bigger than even that specimen but they are very variable trees, many are quite narrow or tapered like Christmas trees and a lot tend to lose their lower branches when they get to a certain size. I appreciate where you're coming from but I think it'll work really well with the palms, as long as no one particular branch is in the way that is! It's to the North of the palms so won't take too much sun away, will give a bit of extra winter shelter and may also help to keep the ground drier in winter. I completely get where you're coming from and it wasn't planted without knowing how big they get, I'm hoping they'll look great together and I don't want my palms to look like isolated specimens, more like part of an environment if that makes sense!

@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, in theory that should be just fine but it completely depends on your area, rainfall and conditions etc. I have mine raised up to ensure better drainage in winter but that’s because we generally have wetter cold months plus the soil warms up a bit quicker in spring. I’ve seen some amazing plants just planted straight into the ground though and for summer growth your soil structure should be perfect.

@@eijiroinouye4115 Not especially, we’ve got quite loamy soil at that end. It sort of depends on your location and how much rainfall you get. Great video George! Really great content. I love your garden plan and the way you explain everything. I want to be constructive when I suggest this comment- not negative so please take it that way. I do feel that the music is a distraction. It’s just too loud. Each device will respond differently to the audio tracks so levels are very important. You will drive people away from watching if the music is too obvious. Yes some like it, but many may not. You might be driving away a potential audience. That being said thanks for putting this content out there. I’ll be watching to see how the garden progresses. Looks like it will be spectacular!
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate your kind comments and helpful feedback! I did try the music on my phone / computer and TV before uploading so apologies if it’s too loud on your device, I’ll do some more testing going towards. Regarding the music, the general feedback is that it went down well and I certainly feel that certain parts of this video would have been slightly dry without it. It was also for dramatic / comedic effect. I don’t have music behind my instructional & informative videos but the more ‘entertainment’ / garden build vids will keep featuring some music. I’ll try to adjust the levels better though and maybe separate the music backed ‘activity montages’ for want of a better phrase from the bits when I’m talking and giving advice. This was my first attempt at combining the two and to be honest it was a bit of hassle dropping the audio volume down for the brief bits I said anyway! I am keen to keep a variety of types of music in my garden build videos. Personally it would mean more to me to develop the style I have in my head than produce generic videos without it but I appreciate what you’re saying, the skill is in the balance I guess. I’ll definitely work on the volume and way the music is used thought and I appreciate your honest and thoughtful suggestions 👍

Loving this channel, love your garden and i too love and have some of the same types of plants you have SUBBED. Mind if i ask a few questions... 1. I have golden gravel 10-20mm type in my front and back garden, will the gravel stop plants like the phormium (i have 2 large ones in whisky barrels) getting wider? i don't mean wider at the top i mean will it have shoots trying to grow from under the gravel, would the gravel stop it? 2. I have a Chamaerops humilis (dwarf fan palm) this will be the 3rd year but in my eyes it doesn't really look like it has grown very much, is it because of the gravel. 3. Can i plant a clumping bamboo into the soil/gravel and it grow ok and what is a good clumping bamboo. I live in Cheshire, UK.

@sniperwipers 3 жыл бұрын
@@GeorgesJungleGarden Can't really remember what the soil is like, tbh i'm not sure on soil types. I have had the gravel for 3 years and yes there is a membrane under the gravel, is that bad for planting?
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden 3 жыл бұрын
@@sniperwipers No worries, I’ll go through it by question. With the membrane I was asking as you’ll need to cut a hole big enough for the plant to spread, it might stop the bamboo. 1. Phormium should be able to go through just fine, the new sections pop up right next to the centre so as long as the gravel isn’t too deep it’ll be fine. 2. Chamaerops are relatively slow growing so I wouldn’t worry at all. A sunny spot with good drainage is best and they don’t need a lot of water. It might take 10-15 years to form a ‘bush’ 2m wide and tall but they’re nice looking and tough plants. 3. You could, I’d be tempted to make a wider circle in the gravel and mulch it with bark etc. to help the new culms come through. It’ll really need a rich soil, not too dry and not sandy to thrive. Maybe not as suited to a hot and dry spot as the first two plants but one of my favourites is Fargesia Robusta Campbell, there’s a lot of nice Fargesias but it’s quite an upright one.

@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden Жыл бұрын
Hi, they'll start rooting as soon as they're planted and I'm sure make good progress over a wet winter or ideally a warm summer with adequate moisture. @GeorgesJungleGarden Yes sir. So I doubt the rooting will take 3 years 😕 🤔
@GeorgesJungleGarden
@GeorgesJungleGarden Жыл бұрын
It depends how how you mean the phrase really, a well rooted pot plant introduced into good soil at the right time and temperature will keep growing without much issue. A naturally slower growing plant like this which has been in a pot a while and is being introduced to less than optimal conditions in a less than ideal climate will take longer. With most larger specimen size palms like this in our climate they’ll take a few years to really settle in, focus on root growth primarily and getting over the shock so it’s realistic to wait a few years before significant visual / above ground growth 👍

They do indeed both grow large but I’m happy with how I think they’ll interact and how the foliage will look together. Monkey puzzles are quite variable and barer lower down with age but the Jubaea will grow so slowly I don’t think the proximity will be much of an issue whereas the winter protection and extra drainage from the tree will help the Jubaea too. A similar thing happened here in US. A large one over 50 feet tall was in Texas and they moved it to a more northern location in Dallas. Hi, they’ll hopefully be opportunities for that later on, it’s something I’ve considered 😃 What might not be apparent is that I’ve had a lot of my structural plants like this Jubaea for a number of years so I’ve literally got 95 % of all the palms and big structural plants I’d want for our garden already and bar the one tree fern I got I won’t be adding a lot more (no budget for that whatsoever currently!). A lot of my remaining potted plants will be used in a community project and I’ll even be selling off some palms this next week! I haven’t actually shown my full garden in many of my videos yet because the bit near the house is a builders yard currently but it’s around 75 x 7.5m so a good size for my plans, I really love that packed jungle look.
