D. E. Keeble Agricultural Contractors Straw spreading in Sutton, Suffolk on Parsnips. Using all JCB equipment - 2 JCB Fastrac 4220 Carting and Spreading & JCB T4i IIIB Loader. The use of the Fastracs in this environment is Very good due to the 4 wheel steering, great visibility, good operator comfort and excelent power delivery for the task.

You said the final strings are caught in the spreader, but don't those strings block the spreader up? They are a nightmare on the muck spreader if there is to much of it.

They wrap around the chopper and then they cut them out routinely every few hours to stop it building up too much.

Great Video! If you dont mind me asking, what good will spreading the straw like that do? I presume its used as some sort of fertilizer? I could be completley wrong! Never seen that done before.

+North West Agri Basically, it is used more for protection and prolonging the harvest period, the parsnips are covered during their dormant stage and covering them stops them shooting and so running to seed extending the harvest window into April. There is a layer of plastic put under the straw aswell. Hope this helps!

Very interesting work! How many bales are spreaded for hectare? It's a convenient operation considering the costs of straw and the work of this machines (also the cost of the "spreader" machine)? Du you know if, after that, there is an immediately increase of yield that can cover the cost of this work or just prolong the time?
@UKAerialPhotography

+Agri957 Thanks, they spread up to 100 bales per hectare but depends on how long it is put down for, the reason for it to to prolong the harvest window and preventing the carrots from shooting again and taking nutritional value from the carrots. Hope this helps!

Do you have to remove the cords from the bale first, I guess ?

Jacob Badrick Not all of the strings are removed, 2 or 3 are left on to hold the bale together when on the machine, the remaining string is then caught by the spreader.
