When Oksana Yerema found a litter of 10 puppies on the doorstep of a relative's home, she knew what she had to do.
The 33-year-old mother of one had been living at with extended family after her own home in Bashtanka, a city in the Mykolaiv Oblast, was destroyed by Russian shelling in late March.
While others advised her to drown the puppies, reminding her that without her own place she was not in a position to take in these dogs, she decided to reach out to the military.
“I wanted to save the puppies,” Ms Yerema said, as she explained why she felt Ukraine’s Armed Forces would be best place to take a couple.
