To me, it's not all that particularly alarming that Russian forces are slowly gaining more territories and the defenders have retreated when the cost of defending territories exceeds the cost of retreating. This is an asymmetric war where Russia has far more heavy weapons than Ukraine. Ukraine's strategy is not to defend every inch of territory to the last man, but to do two things instead, 1) prolong the resistance for as long as possible, and 2) inflict as much loss to the enemy as possible provided that they retain fighting resistance. So the question is not if Russia is winning more battles or gaining territories. The question is whether Russia is inching closer to their strategic aim, and whether they're close or farther away from the outcome they want with every passing day.

It basically comes down to: can Ukrain do enough damage to demotivate the Russians from taking the prise. And we know the answer to this by looking at history. Had the west not done sanctions, yes. The Swedish Defence University has a podcast that talked about the Russian battalion battle-groups. These are heavy on tanks and support weapons and have a large amount of firepower. The problem is that they lack sufficient infantry to screen them which is why the Ukrainian infantry can get close and set up ambushes so easily.
@matteosorrentino23622 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the parent unit of the BTG as they are built around a maneuver battalion of the parent unit and a company of the opposing arm, so a tank brigade or division will form BTG with very little infantry in comparison to tanks but a motorized brigade BTG will have less tanks and more infantry and at this point I really don’t know what type of BTG are more commonly deployed over ukraine. However i have read reports that some of these units are entirely lacking their signal platoons which would explain why the Ukrainians are finding written orders with locations and timetables to complete movement and advances on russian officers they capture, of course take this information with a grain of salt as it’s quite difficult to confirm. Artillery seems lacking in a concentrated way too, a few BTGs do not have their full complement of guns and they are quite spread out between units having only one or two pieces

Honestly it's nothing new. It's just how people are. If you go back and look at WW2 it's the same thing, it's just that we won so in retrospect it seems "warranted". But the sides that lost were surely surprised to realize that, and we would have been too if we'd lost. I think what we're all experiencing, especially in last few years, is disillusionment. We really thought humanity as a whole had progressed, that we were more "sophisticated" now, but the reaction to Covid and now this has made it clear that we are just the same as the people who came before us. Humanity has not advanced whatsoever, and "never again" was a farce.
@NLDlover2 жыл бұрын
Here's the thing, nobody is denying that Russia is making advances on the ground. What's being pointed out is that the Ukrainians are making them bleed for every inch of land, which is exactly what they need to be doing in an asymmetric, attritional war. Nobody expected the Ukrainians to totally halt the advance and push the Russians back completely. The Ukrainians don't need to "win" they just need to not lose. Russia cannot achieve its overall goals in Ukraine. I know that because I know how to do math. Even if Putin somehow managed to conquer the whole country (highly unlikely at this point) what next? Occupation? LoL He would need at bare minimum 500,000 people just to hold and administer the territory and that's a conservative estimate, it's likely a lot more. Where are they coming from? How's he going to pay them? Kit them out? Supply them? The economy is in a state of collapse. Stalin could throw more bodies at the problem because at least Stalin was being supplied by the Western allies. Putin is basically overseeing what will become a massive North Korea. Completely cut off from the global economy. But even if he somehow managed to do that, now he has to deal with an insurgency that is being armed by the G7, which will make the Iraqi insurgency look like a tea party. They already waving standards for new recruits, using Chechen and Syrian mercenaries, begging China for aid, and putting senior members of the FSB on house arrest. These are not the actions of a regime that is confident in its ultimate success. You don't need a granular level understanding of logistics or 'doctrine' or whatever to understand the big picture here. Again, it's just math.

This is why the Ukrainian propaganda is much more pervasive than Russian, it is not the Ukrainian government spreading their propaganda, it is average common people from all over the world, helped by tech companies like twitter, which are doing it. After this war, I sincerely think that any country which truly gives a damn about its national security and/or its war potential, these countries should ban twitter.

Admittedly, I wasn't originally sure about this channel when I first found it (about a month or two prior to the UA invasion by RU), but I have been continuously impressed by your unbiased approach to unravelling information as well as explaining the WHY so much as the WHAT of a situation. It's one thing to provide targeted facts and allow people to make their own assumptions, but the method that you provide context and background to information is incredibly useful. In a previous video you dispelled the knee-jerk "RU can't do anything!" shouts about the convoy W/NW of Kyiv and gave valid and understandable (w/anecdotal reference) information as to why a convoy of such scope/size might be 'stalled' and it was a great eye opener. For people who are curious to look past the high-level/mass-media information given on these topics, you feel like an honest, experienced, and well researched source of valid information. Thank you for your efforts and the lengths that you go to in order to gather information and present it in an as-unbiased-as-you-can-be format. I don’t know what kind of information they give you in the West, but here in Ukraine we are perfectly aware of our situation. No matter how much resistance we put up, their army is still huge and the bombardment of our cities is only intensifying. But this does not change the fact that our army is successfully defending in key areas and has already captured equipment, including air defense and electronic warfare worth millions. Still Putin will not back down without at least some major victory that will allow him to show his people that thousands of their children did not die in vain, so the worst is yet to come. I also want to say that despite the arrows on the maps and the videos from propaganda resources about the distribution of food to the civilian population (some of which are filmed in Russia itself), Ukrainians will continue to resist.

Against that narrative, I'd like to point out it all depends on, just like in the Vietnam war and Robert McNamara, "kill ratios". Consider the following facts: in the Afghan war of 1979-1989, the Soviets had about 15k killed and roughly twice that many wounded (for the exact figures, from the internet: "The Soviet Union, ending a long silence about the exact number of its casualties in the war in Afghanistan, said today that 13,310 soldiers had been killed, 35,478 wounded and 311 are missing,") Now if Ukraine has taken out 5k-10k Russians in the last few weeks, that's about half as many as were taken out in 10 years in the Afghan war, which is generally understood to be a Soviet defeat. As for Vietnam, it was roughly a 30:1 kill ratio, and 90% of the Vietcong (Sough Vietnam rebels) died, so it was a "Pyrrhic victory" for the USA. All in all I'd say Ukraine is winning at the moment, in the same way Finland won in WWII vs the Russians. What is needed now is a negotiated settlement like NATO stays out of UKR forever if Russia retreats. A fair bargain.

Same goes for Kyiv vs Kiev. This is an aspect of the war that's lost to the outsiders: Ukrainians speak perfect Russian. This fact alone makes all those vertical videos of destruction and death hit so much harder you wouldn't believe it! Add to that how similar Russian and Ukrainian cities look. And I can't even imagine what it must feel like for the troops in the occupying force. This is the problem of morale that's brought up so often. Imagine if, instead of Iraq, you were deployed to Canada, and it would be Canadian troops that you were tasked to kill, and Canadian cities to capture. After a short while, being thirsty or tired wouldn't be your primary complaint anymore.

Chris, excellent excellent presentation. This was the most Innovative and interesting presentation on the war I've heard so far. And I appreciate the fact that you're looking at it objectively with a dispassionate view to what's happening both in the Ukrainian in the Russian side. Uncertainty as you point out to draw conclusions at this time today's Victory is tomorrow's Retreat. We know that; the question becomes what are the long-term likelihood of success or failure. Which I think that's what you've been so successful in pointing out and illustrating. Thank you very much for what I see as probably the best presentation so far on the conflict.

Americans can't be completely impartial. I see some fake claims (not blaming the author) and stupid propaganda (about the seizure of the Baltic states, the author thinks like an imperialist, but this does not correspond to the Russian line of behavior). It is good that the author is trying to analyze not only one-sided sources. The bad thing is that he does not respect human rights and the possibility of peaceful coexistence. The fact is that Ukraine is an extremely criminal state built on lies. From the outside it may sound unreasonable, but there are so many horrifying photos and videos that a good person would throw up.

Thank you. People were going "Bah bah bah!" when I said I am interested in seeing more from the Russian side. Not because I root for them but because it helps give a more accurate view of the situation and potentially make predictions of how things will go in the next few weeks.

Ukraine can't really win a long conventional war against Russia. But they can prove to Russians that they will drag this out and make it as painful as possible and then run an insurgency that makes occupation impossible. Force Russia to make concessions in a negotiated peace. Which in the end doesn't really leave Russia any further ahead then they started. Plus they will have a damaged military plus damaged economy from sanctions plus force the swedes and fins to join NATO plus the fiasco the Russian military operation was where it wildly underperformed Western analysts predictions. Which means that even if Russia gets a "tactical" victory in Ukraine it will significantly damage Russia strategically for the foreseeable future

The problem is that Russians lie about everything, so "their side" cannot be trusted, like, at all. The western media may have a bias and report one sidedly, but Russians straight up lie about every-fu**ing-thing. If there would be independent Russian outlets, like they did in the first Chechen war, then it would be great to have that info, otherwise you have to just assume it's all pre-approved by the Kremlin, or done by it's pre laid rules.

In the fog of war you can tell a lot about how the enemy is doing by what they are not doing. 1. The towns of Chernehiv, Sumy and Kharkiv protect the North Eastern routes to Kyiv from Russia. The fact that the Russians have not captured these towns and are instead rushing past them to Brovary outside the capital Kyiv (while leaving their rear undefended) suggests that they do not have the manpower or supplies to both take those towns and to encircle Kyiv so they have chosen to focus on Kyiv. 2. Likewise with the Russian advance from the North West of Kyiv (where the massive convoy is), they are establishing a forward base near Hostomel (antonov airport) but they aren't rapidly sweeping down to the south to cut off the supply lines into Kyiv from the south. This strongly suggests that the Russians do not currently have the manpower or supplies to actually do that and are instead waiting for Southern troops to move North. 3. In both Chernihiv and the area around Chernobyl there have been several reports of Ukranian forces shooting down Russian Jets and helicopters. This is well behind enemy lines and so the fact that the Russians have not managed to stop these attacks strongly suggests that they do not have the Special forces troops available to go into the forests and weed out the Ukrainian infantry with MANPADs that are likely hiding there. 4. The southern troops are not moving North to reach the capital as fast as the northern battle groups are. Again this strongly suggests that the Russians are not able to free up enough resources in the south to make a direct push for the Capital. This is likely due to the fact that their advance to Odessa has been blocked at Mykolaiv and they still haven't captured Mariupol. At this stage I don't believe Kyiv can be taken in a matter of weeks because after 3 weeks of this war, all the Russians have managed to take is one town with less than 300,000 people. I think it will be much more likely that the Russians will run of supplies before they can even encircle Kyiv and that is why they are shipping captured Javelins and NLAWs to the Donbass region because if they have to retreat they will do so back into Donbass and Crimea.

UA army has lost potential for counterattacks larger than tactical level, worst case scenario for RU is they keep everything they seized so far. Kiev battles are tough due to terrain and South doesn't have enough troops to exploit all possibilities. RU ops in Chernigov and Kharkov were conducted very poorly but that does not change overall picture. Best thing UA can manage is sit in big towns.

Roads to Kiev is opened to evac as much civilians as possible, so that fighting could go easier. Right now russians and rebel republics concentrate on retaking lands of those republics on the east. In there the largest ukrainian military groups are still operating, even tho' encirculed, and firing ballistic rockets (with cartriges) at cities in those republics. That is a biggest problem right now. If you could watch recent events from Donetsk, you've been terrified of THAT amount of blood on streets.

Chris: As a former US Army infantryman, I would appreciate hearing your assessment of the Russian army's level of training for its soldiers, and the quality of it's logistical system. I can't imagine the US Army sending conscripts into battle without letting them know what is going on, yet I heard many captured Russians soldiers say this happened. I also never heard of US tanks running out of gas and being abandoned to the extent it is apparently happening to the Russians now. Don't the Russians have supply officers and NCOs that take care of those things? According to the Oryx website, the Ukranians have more tanks today than when the war started, because of recovering abandoned Russian equipment. Lastly, I'd like your take on Russian NCOs. It appears the Russian army lacks a vigorous NCO corps, which may explain why so many senior officers are being targeted by Ukranian snipers. Thanks for all your great content. JVH

Nevermind about running out of gas for the tanks, isn't there a form of asset denial they're neglecting for them? I'm no expert, just an interested civvie, but I'd think that something as powerful as a tank ought to be destroyed, or at least wrecked before being abandoned if it has to be left behind, to keep the enemy from being able to use it against you.

@@DustyLightning absolutely right. The US military teaches if any sensitive equipment is abandoned you must destroy it or render it inoperable. We are just seeing the massive incompetence of the Russian military at this point.

@@DustyLightning Exactly, in the battles of Iraq (such as 73 Easting) the US Abrams that were damaged and unable to be exfiltrated were scuttled to prevent enemies from studying them and understanding their weaknesses and possibly using them against their enemies. Although I'm sure the Russians aren't stupid, perhaps they haven't the explosives or equipment to scuttle them.

@@chrisdrzymala4432 The Americans did this so that Iraq could not find Abrams' weaknesses. But Ukrainians have the same tanks in their army. Russia and Ukraine are fighting the same tanks that existed in Soviet times, and many of them were built in Kharkiv. That is why Ukrainians are repairing and start using abandoned or slightly damaged Russian tanks so quickly
