If a mortar round fails to fire; you wait to give it time to fire ( in case it’s a hangfire) and for the barrel to cool. Or pull the trigger a few more times if it has one (these are gravity fired mortars tho). Then you tip the barrel on it’s side, and allow the round to slide out for someone to catch and carry safely away to be destroyed. The propellant cap is checked to see if there is a firing pin striker mark on it. So it's dangerous but a mortar round failing isn't immediately going to kill everyone.

Sure. would it open up a gateway? Yeah as far as the next defensible position. The propaganda value of Bakhmut is however extremely important to both sides, for Ukraine their perceived success is what keeps military aid flowing, for Russia it has become emblematic since they have been beating their heads against it for 6 months. Its has enormous strategic value for both sides, but only part of it is due to its batttlefield significance. And you can bet your life Putin is demanding Bakhmut.

The BBC reporter is one of the best, but she shouldn't ask a soldier on the Front Line if he thinks they can still win. He's pulling everything he's got in his heart, mind and soul to muster the bravery and stamina he needs just to finish the day. War is belief in yourself being able to fight on. She should ask him this: when do you think you'll begin to rebuild this once-beautiful city of Bakhmut? Ukraine will win their independence because Russia has crossed a line in the sand that is etched in our human psyche and that line is our survival. A Ukrainian has his back against the wall and that is why every Ukrainian soldier is worth ten Russian troops. President Putin will one day understand that he inadvertently created a Ukrainian 'David' against the Russian 'Goliath'.
