After 10 months of war, Russian advances and Ukrainian counter-offensives, winter weather has arrived in Ukraine.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Russia may have retreated from Kherson in early November but Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure over the last month signal a new phase of the war, as Putin weaponises the cold weather.
So as parts of Ukraine plunge into sub-zero temperatures and pressure mounts on Putin to negotiate, how might this war evolve as we enter the winter months?
In today’s episode of the Fourcast, we speak to our international editor Lindsey Hilsum - who is currently on her fifth trip to Ukraine since the war began - about what it’s like to be in the muddy trenches with Ukrainian soldiers, Russia’s culture war against Ukraine and if we can expect the war to slow down in the coming months.
All reports from Lindsey's recent trip to Ukraine were produced by Rob Hodge and filmed and edited by Josh Ho.

Lindsay, please advise the Ukranians to dig small water scoop drain holes in the trench. These are the size of a bucket, to the side of where you are walking, just big enough to catch the water in the trench which can be scooped out in a bucket. Construction workers do this in order to keep the ground they are walking on dry. The water will drain off into the scoop hole. Allows the ground to dry and firm up. Make it easier to walk, keeps boots drier. Superb reporting. Sad poem.

@@ttvtheundeadfarmer2549 They did not know this in 1914 and they had to relearn the lessons in Anzio in 1944 when trench warfare was reenacted briefly in WW2. Systematic examination of feet for trench foot had to be brought into use as did the extensive use of duckboards and complex darinage systems in order to avoid this debilitating condition.

I'm afraid that you're vastly overestimating the influence Western governments have over the thousands of media outlets based in the West. Their bosses are the same people the people who own the military industrial complex in the banks own the media and the government here. All this is about is getting rich off of War. And all of the western reporters they do not go out in the field for real they pretend like they do and do little movie skits that are fake. Just like nine times out of 10 the video you're getting when the Warfare started a combat footage wasn't even from this war. They launched complete information Warfare when this started and by that I mean lies. I don't believe this woman was ever with any real unit and what they call a dog a pony show is when they get a guided tour in the safe areas and then they act as if they're on the front line. Basically they're handled there. You talk about controlling the media zielinsky only allows one party and One News media Outlet in Ukraine now and anyone who speaks the truth is put on their hit list. Yeah some of the things this lady has said right at the beginning of this video is complete flat out lies. Immediately she lied so why would I believe anything else he had to say? I have great admiration for Lyndsay Hillstam (probably spelled that wrong, sorry) and her gallant, comprehensive and ultimately informative journalism. In fact, Channel 4 has genuinely surpassed the BBC in terms of fresh news out of Ukraine, in depth coverage, honest comprehensive coverage and that all important INFORMATION. Lyndsay stands out in a highly competitive crowd of great reporters working for Channel 4 in Ukraine, making the channel one of my main, “go to,” sources for this war. Her, “obsession with WWI poetry,” doesn’t surprise me. The coverage we’re getting is clearly coming from an informed, educated place, which makes such a huge difference to how the news is focussed, processed and passed on to us, in the comfort of our living rooms. Thank you, Channel 4. And, thank you especially, Lyndsay. You deserve some form of recognition for your excellent, brave work.

Hats off to Lindsay for bringing to us the gory details of war. I wish she had done similar reporting when the Afghans and Iraqis were fighting against the invaders of their countries, i.e. the mighty US and NATO militaries, not too many years ago. I happen to agree with John Mearsheimer that Ukraine is suffering horribly because it is caught and being used, willingly and unwillingly, as a pawn in the proxy war between the US and Russia. It’s a shame. And, sadly, Taiwan will likely suffer a similar fate, vis-vis US and China, if cooler heads don’t prevail soon.

Lindsey and her team are gutsy and did excellent reporting. BUT, in my arrogant opinion (!) they are wrong about the weather and made several mistakes in their forecasts: 1. While it is true that the fall and early winter are very difficult for modern warfare in Ukraine, this is not really due to cold. "General Mud" is the real culprit. Predictable heavy rains in the spring and fall make travel off-paved-road in heavy tanks, APCs, etc. difficult to almost impossible. (The Ukrainians and Russians actually have a name for this problematic period, "raputitsa.") So a war of "fire and maneuver" is not feasible. BUT, the period of mid-December through February, when the ground in the fields is frozen hard, is actually GOOD for off-road rural warfare with heavy vehicles. 2. Hence the forecast of a "freeze" in the lines of combat during the winter is very likely wrong. 3. Also the forecast of a "spring offensive," mentioned several times, is also wrong. The correct forecast for 2023 is a "summer offensive," AFTER the predictable spring rains and mud. 4. What will likely happen during the depth of winter is that around Xmas-New Years/early Jan, the Ukrainians will take advantage of their advantages (better winter gear and procedures, poor Russian conscripts, demoralized Russian troops, high Russian casualties in the East, etc.) and launch "Thunder Runs" in the east to break through the weakest points in the eastern Russian lines. (A "Thunder Run" is a famous tactic from the seizure of Baghdad in 3 days by US forces, in which a line of tanks and other fighting vehicles charge through defensive lines, attract and neutralize enemy fire, and keep going to roll up territory and envelop the enemy from the rear.) In the south the Ukrainians will attempt to isolate all of Crimea by fully destroying the Kerch Strait bridge and by advancing along the P37 road to the 12-month, un-destroyed port of Berdyans'k on the Sea of Azov. Fingers crossed that I am right. Glory to Ukraine!

She hit the nail on the head. Russia wants to remove Ukrainians off the face of the earth. Ukrainian are wonderful people, it seems Russian are jealous of their neighbors. Better looking men and women, big hearts, intelligent and resourceful people, united in goals of freedom. The war has allowed us to see with our eyes, what reality is… Russia has proved to be such a bully and a brutal type of person, maybe not all, but it looks bad. Those Ukrainians that burnt alive 50 Russian national civilians in Odessa before the invasion were not so lovely. Be careful when making generalisations because it can obscure the truth.

Ukrainian & Russian people are ethnically the same, Slavic, neighbours. I have visited both countries. To be honest there is no difference in how they look, they are both beautiful people. This war is the result of NATO trying to use Ukraine as a battering ram against Russia. Russia has more natural resources than any other nation on earth. Have you figured out yet why NATO keeps toppling leaders oil rich nations. You seem like a simple person.

interesting point about the electrical system destruction. As the Ukrainian rail system is mainly electric, this plays a huge part in resupplying the frontlines with all resources to keep it going. Without power then things get really tough to still fight.

I wished Lindsey who is such an empathic story teller and can open people's backgrounds so beautifully would - reporting about Ukrainian real life situations - once meet and talk with this KZbinr, her explaining EuroMaidan and such backgrounds of Ukrainian purpose to their audience: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3vLapSGqsangck Come on Lindsey! Would be so great, would certainly be a great conversation among two great communicates, would be great for the audience to witness, could get a broadcasting climax. Thank you and best wishes.

Great reporting! May St John XXIII and St John Paul II, together with St Nicholas, St Andrew, St George, Isaiah and St Catherine of Alexandria, intercede with the Almighty for the removal of Putin, Lavrov, Shoigu, Sergei Surovikin and their minions from power and a just peace for Ukraine. May St Michael and all the angels protect Ukrainian skies and may Our Lady of Zarvanytsia help all Ukrainians who are mourning loved ones.

The regions bordering the Black Sea have historically been very diverse, a sort of crossroads where people of widely different backgrounds passed through, visited, stayed or settled. Such is the nature of areas that are easily accessible: cultures and ideas grinding against against each other, creating tolerance and a shared history and future. On the other hand, everything about Russia is small town or rural in nature. As a result, outsiders are viewed with suspicion and new ideas or other cultures frowned upon. Kind of like the US of today where the big cities/crossroads are melting-pots run by tolerant liberals with rural areas run by petty, distrustful and navel-gazing conservatives. I digress, Russia in its current and historic forms is about as opposite to the Ukraine melting pot as you can get. Indeed, through those parts of history where Ukraine was a part of Russia, Russia was always up to its brutal power games of subjugation. Ukraine, as a crossroads, could never be a part of the isolationist Russia, it was just too different.

Just WHAT, would the purpose be, in Hilsum having to make a run for it, rather than sticking to walks through the trench lines, or open land BEHIND the trenches, (which may involve a longer route, but no exposure to snipers), ?

After Brexit and lack of economical responsibility coming from Britain - it's women like this - that can renew at least my faith in the kindheartedness, strength, perseverence of British way of life and world perception. Well done for the interview and moreso - for the experiences undergone while being in the centre of this useless war started by a paranoia-driven psychopath. Long live Ukraine - greetings from Latvia.

Do not put so much faith in the british, be carefull, otherwise you'll be very disapointed. The british attacked Argentina, among so many other countries all over the world, in 1086, 1807, 1833, 1845 and 1982 always as vicious as the kossaks are attacking Ukraine, the last time with cluster bombs, bombing campaing hospitals, etc., threat of nukes and all the beauties seeing now in Ukraine. If you are a good man, what i assume at first beforehand, and want peace on earth take a look at the whole picture before saying something so light.

Usual hyperbole as usual British broadcasters employ people to have good politics, English or journalism degrees but know nothing about conflict. The winter will not stop this conflict from being a war of mobility. This is not 1916 neither side is relying on horses and wagons and fixed-income defences leave a scar across the landscape that points an arrow to your positions. Warm food and good boots will make a difference but so will precision munitions and drones. Ukraine has the advantage in all of this.
