By the way, an interesting fact: from November 29 to December 27, 1918, Suja was the capital of Soviet Ukraine According to the 1897 census, the distribution of the population by language was as follows: 61.16% spoke Ukrainian, 37.20% spoke Russian. In 1926, Ukrainians made up 61.2% of the total population in Suzhan Volost.

Regarding to the rules russia tries to set, this means that the whole Kursk Oblast is now Ukrainian heartland and can be annexed. On a more serious note, my best, partly educated guess for the why would be that it was "just" a raid. A daring raid, as British WW2 historians might say. They showed that they can still attack, did a lot of damage as it seems and probably planted a lot of worry in a lot of russian minds. And I figure it can have a small impact on Ukrainian morale. It also brings Ukraine in the news cycle again, with positive news even. The only thing I find a tiny bit odd is that it was regular AFU troops and not on of the segments purpose build for doing border raids into russia.

No. It was obvious from the outset they need to clear the border, plus have access to at least all the critical logistics targets, otherwise Ukraine would never actually be able to get rid of them entirely out of the country. It's just a real pity Nato has taken so long to come to this decision. If they'd done this a year ago, there would be a lot less damage to people and infrastructure of Ukraine.

Well laid out video here Suchomimus. Thanks so much for this work. While many of us may have heard about this incursion by Ukraine, there was not hard facts, and the detailed information we're accustomed to we get from your reports. The downing of a possible three helicopters is a significant take here along with the other destroyed battlefield vehicles along with captured enemy personnel. I am not of the belief that this incursion is for the purpose of taking, and holding this area either. I think it serves three purposes however. One being a clipping of nearby enemy assets for protection of Kharkiv. Two, perhaps a flushing out of more air defense systems along with other recon purposes. Three, creating a possible enemy troop displacement, and battlefront chaos. In any event, the incursion was certainly a surprise, and definitely caught the Russians off guard. Great video, and geo-location work Suchomimus. Thanks again. Perhaps we'll learn more in the coming hours, and days. 🇺🇲🇺🇦 Glory to God, Victory for Ukraine, Rise Free Nations!

The conscripts weren't frontline troops, they were Border Guards, which is a legal use for conscripts according to Russian law. While 30+ captured Russians is definitely a good thing, since they weren't being used illegally, there really isn't any reason to believe that their capture will have any special political effect.

@@williamlloyd3769 You would hope so, wouldn't you? From what I've seen and heard so far though, it sounds like the Russians "real" border defense is (or was lol) actually about 15km past the border, and the "force" at the border checkpoint were only meant to be a speedbump. Based on the reports Ive been seeing, it sounds like a lot of the "Border Guard" in that area was made up of a bunch of 18-22 year old, kids who were conscripted from the area, handed an AK and a uniform and told which direction to shoot. So the whole speedbump thing does make sense. Either way, it sure didn't help the speedbump squad when, (as @gecho194 already mentioned) all the Regulars un-assed that whole area the minute they saw the first Ukrainian, and left those guys behind lol. I hate to admit it, but after seeing those captured conscripts and hearing them talk about being left behind... I almost felt sorry for them. Almost. Lol.

Any Russian offensive in the Sumy area would almost assuredly need to be supplied through Sudzha. It is also the Russian terminus of the "Brotherhood" natural gas pipeline which would partially supply the gas to Hungary. It is quite possible that Ukraine is seeking to deny logistical support to all Russian forces in the Sumy area as well as potentially destroying the pipeline on the Russian side of the border and basically tell Hungary "sorry, we'd love to send you gas but there is a problem on the Russian side".

@@cmtwgrdk2748 the pipeline does continue from Sudzha, through Ukraine and into Europe via Hungary. However, the Russians have installed a metering station & exchange feeder in Sudzha where Russia can control the flow of the gas. Destroying that installation would create problems for Russia continuing to send natural gas to Hungary.

The drone strike on the MI-28 is interesting. The drone makes several passes before hitting the tail rotor. I think that the helicopter pilot didn't notice the drone, because if he had, he would probably have been able to outrun it. The MI-28 has a top speed of about 300 kmh, which is far faster than any drone. But the pilot has a bit of a dilema - fly low and slow to avoid manpads (but expose yourself to drones), or fly high and fast to avoid drones (but expose yourself to manpads).
