A WSJ article reports that four Russian ships were damaged by Sea Baby deployed mines near Crimea. A Bora-class hovercraft, a Project 22160 Pavel Dezhavin are confirmed. The others are likely a Stenka class patrol boat and an Alexandrit-class minesweeper.

Well it does have a small navy including two ex Royal Navy mine sweepers which cannot go into the Black Sea until the war is over. At that time I can see Ukraine getting more naval vessels for its future protection.

Ukraine has a navy, but its fleet is largerly operated from dry land. Ukrainian navy also operates ground launched anti-ship cruise missiles that have also achieved quite remarkable achievements, such as the sinking of the Moskva by Neptune missiles.

Well technically by now they do have a small navy lol. Its just mostly drones like these ones, so very unconventional but highly effective! And comparing the russian navy to the American, which has been under fire from hundreds if not thousands of drones and missiles for the past 8 months yet hasnt taken even a single casualty or damage to a single ship while largely not even being allowed to strike back at the launchers in yemen by the corrupt, inept and cowardly biden administration (the same admin who keeps feet dragging and groveling to russia every time ukraine needs anything) and it paints an even more hilarious picture of the incompetent russian navy😂

These won't be contact mines but likely some of the old stock of US Navy Mark 60 CAPTOR mines which are lightweight MK46 12.75" torpedoes deployed inside of a hard case and moored just up off the bottom, they use an acoustic sensor which can be set for a specific ship type or even individual ship if they have the full acoustic signature on file that explains why the ships have all been hit aft around the propellers

@@harold22774 This makes a lot of sense. With the recent arrival of Russia's _Admiral Gorshkov_ task group to Cuba, I wondered how it was that the _Admiral Gorshkov_ itself has a very similar displacement to the Canadian _Halifax_ class frigates (one of which was in the group tracking the Russians) but appears to have a much larger arsenal of weapons. If the Russians have put tonnes more missiles on their ship, what have they removed tonnes of (compared to the Canadian ship) to achieve the same overall displacement? Given that the ONLY russian aircraft carrier only leaves port, (where is lives for repair and rebuild) when a sea-going tug escorts it. Virtually every time it sails - it fails and has to be towed back. So for that reasaon (and their other uses towing military implements) I think tug boats can be considered 'military vessels'. Nice job on this one Sucho!

Or Engines for that matter. Russia were supposed to fulfil a contract with India for 3 ships, however the gas turbine engines were manufactured in Ukraine and after the 2014 invasion Ukraine refused to build them. Then a Russian company was supposed to build them but not surprisingly were unable to. India still haven't received those ships. Dear old Putin has ruined both Russia's arms and shipbuilding industries. The Russian citizens must be so proud.

Possibly this was a proof-of-technology test run, before committing to production and deployment at scale. The effectiveness of the weapon, and the effectiveness of Russian reactions/counter-measures, need to be assessed before an extensive mining campaign can be mounted. A lot of Ukraine's weapons and tactics seem to start at the guy-in-his-garage level, and get ramped up when it's clear they work in the field. Even with Ukrainian determination and ingenuity, not everything can be done at once. Slava Ukraina.

No it isn't. Ukraine is making do with decades old, tried and tested AND OFTEN REPLACED weapons and technology. FFS, ATACMS is from the 1980s, F-16s (any day now...) are from the '70s, HIMARS is from the '90s... The newest tech they got are literally children's toys they use to air-drop hand grenades. Ukraine is in the same, if not worse, shit they were just a few months ago when they had to retreat and cede territory - they just have enough ammo now. And none of it is some space-magic Infinity Gem tech doing all the fighting for them. Ukrainians are still holding for dear life with what the West and the rest COULD SPARE. Comfortably spare.

I'm surprised they haven't done this earlier - no need to enter the harbour areas and risk their defensives. Just drop some mines in the harbour entrances and the channels used to enter and exit. And the added bonus the Russians have no idea how many so they waste resources sweeping large chunks of sea and given their technical lack of wizardry elsewhere I can't imagine they are too effective.

Unfortunately you are seeing evidence that the quality of WSJ articles are on the decline ever since Rupert Murdoch’s acquisition. During the same period it has noticeably also become noticeably right wing oriented. Several commentators on the news publishing industry believe what little and poor reporting continues is merely a facade of independent journalism being retained to try and keep credence while being used to speed right wing propaganda.
