Ukraine's army hold tank drills in Kharkiv region amid fears of new Russian assault

Ukrainian armed forces concluded three-day military tank drills in northeastern Kharkiv region as country’s senior military official warned of possible Russian assault from all fronts.
The rare footage shot by Reuters during the Jan 25-28 exercise was embargoed until Feb 2 for security reasons.
Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, told Ukrainian and international media he does not rule out another attack from the north, south and east around the date of February 24, the day when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Military experts say Moscow appears determined to push forward in the coming months before Kyiv receives hundreds of newly pledged Western battle tanks and armored vehicles for a counter-attack to recapture occupied territory this year.

J'ai 20 ans de moins que vous et je ne pensais pas non plus connaitre le chaos de la guerre que mes grand-parents me décrivaient en pleurant... le grand chaos de la deuxième guerre mondiale. Il y a deux choses qui me gênent et je vous en fais part. En premier lieu, la croyance populaire que le front de la guerre est loin de chez nous. Pourtant quand vous mesurez la distance la plus courte à vol d'oiseau entre la France et l'Ukraine, il n'y a que 1036 Kms. En second lieu, le fait que le patriotisme et la surenchère belliqueuse commencent à monter dans les deux blocs OTAN / Russie-Chine avec une adhésion de plus en plus forte auprès de leur population respective. A force de propagandes et de fracas médiatiques, on assiste tous les jours à des démonstrations télévisuelles (et sur le web) dépeintes et décrites théâtralement sur des victoires militaires de telle ou telle force armée, des exercices conjoints entre pays, des menaces d'attaques nucléaires, des pseudo scénarii journalistiques qui jouent à la surenchère... des deux cotés. Malgré les atouts de notre ère de l'information, où l'on croyait trouver les vérités et le partage de connaissance dans une grande bibliothèque mondiale qu'est Internet, une troisième guerre mondiale se prépare. L'Humain n'apprend pas. La deuxième guerre est née de ce patriotisme et de cette haine montante. Si je dois aller au front et combattre pour ma liberté, je n'ai pas le choix, je le ferai. Vous dites "patriotisme et la surenchère belliqueuse commencent à monter dans les deux blocs OTAN / Russie-Chine..." L'OTAN n'est pas un pays, mais une organisation de défense militaire qui regroupe un ensemble d'états, la montée du nationalisme dans ces pays n'est pas responsable de cette guerre, au contraire, en général et comme c'est le cas en France, le nationalisme de l'extrême droite penche depuis plus de 23 ans vers la Russie de Poutine et ils le soutiennent toujours, même si en ce moment les Zemmour et Le Pen prennent leurs distances avec Poutine, car cela leur à value la perte des élections aux présidentielles 2022 et ils pensent déjà à la prochaine de 2027! Par contre le nationalisme russe et Chinois ajouté à la propagande exacerbée de la presse nationale qui n'a qu'un seul son de cloche, alors là oui, c'est du même niveau que ce que l'on n'a eu avec la propagande nazie en 1936! Mais il n'y a pas que les armes militaires en 2023 pour gagner une guerre, il y a aussi et surtout l'arme financière, et la Russie a déjà perdu la guerre, car les entreprises européennes et américaines ne remettront pas les pieds en Russie avant au moins 30 ou 50 ans et à condition que ce soit plutôt un président style Gorbatchev et non un Medvedef ou un Progojine! 1036 km ce n'est rien pour des missiles hypersoniques, beaucoup si l'armée rouge devait faire venir sur Paris plusieurs centaines de milliers d'hommes, il n'est pas certain qu'ils arriveraient tous en vie, sauf en traversant la Hongrie de leur ami Orban! L'armée russe aura du mal à se moderniser faute de composants et matériels électroniques américains ou Européens pour ces avions, chars...la Chine ne sera pas au niveau, mais à terme, c'est peut-être elle qui avalera l'ours russe, car elle est impérialiste et aimerait bien conquérir de nouvel espace, car elle manque de ressources et d'espaces! De mon côté si conflit mondial il y a, je ne pourrais que faire la cuisine, ou aider à la logistique, soins... mon âge, mon physique et ma santé ne me permettraient pas d'aller courir sur un champ de bataille, je serais une proie très facile ! Pourtant j'ai fait mon service militaire en 1979, j'étais matelot embarqué sur le porte-hélicoptère Jeanne d’Arc!

Imagine if one of the regions of the Russian Federation asked for its real autonomy and wanted to leave the federation for good, what would you say? The problem is if the Ukrainians know how to operate the Leopard and Abrams tanks. I heard from videos these tanks are not easy to operate. I hope they were taught how to operate these tanks as quickly as possible.

According to a Polish instructor, who are now giving a military training course to Ukraine soldiers as to how-to-operate their Leopard 2 in Poland, it would usually take at least two-month training. Hopefully Ukraine soldiers learn and get accustomed to all the new tanks (not limited to Leopard 2) they are receiving in shorter period.

Leopard 2 is difficult to learn yes, i know though, that Denmark and Germany are discussing repurchasing old Leopard 1 tanks that Denmark sold aproximately 10 years ago that are currently stored in germany. The Leopard 1 is on the contrary a very easy tank to learn and use. One of my buddies who is a tank commander in the Danish defense, told me that the Leopard 1 felt very natural to use, and he was really sad to see it replaced for the more modern Leopard 2. After learning the Leopard 2, obviously that is a more capable tank on every parameter. However the Leopard 1 is an insanely great tank to keep behind the front line. It can still pack a punch capable of even the most modern tanks. It is however very vulnerable, and probably won't survive more than 1 direct hit from even sovjet era anti tank weaponry.

Leopards 2s and Abrams are more user friendly and actually easier to operate than old T-72. But like anything else, you need to spend some time learning which button to press, how to fix things and stuff. Polish Leopard 2 instructors from Swietoszow training center say that it will take at least 5 week to train Ukrainian crews.

Definitely, those tanks need to be protected by infantry, IFVs, recon drones otherwise those Leopards may end up like Turkish Leopard 2 tanks in Syria where ISIS was shooting at those tanks from all sides. Another issue is that Turks used Leopard 2 tanks for urban combat which is a bad idea.

Ukraine troops are being taught to commit suicide. Russian tank doctrine in a combined arms operation is that every two tanks are protected by a BMP-19 or BMPT-Terminator with Kornet anti tank missiles with a range of 8 to 12 km and can carry thermobaric warheads and well as twin canon that would make short work of the infantry in this exercise, and the same applies to Russian Mi-28 and KA-52 helicopters that also protect the tanks. The Bradleys and Stykers being proved for the infantry are no match for this firepower.
