Do you think our country should have allowed Cuba to become an anti US military base? We did the same thing Putin and Russia is doing. We were more fortunate as the world wasn't funding Cuba and they met our demands before we had to invade them. Russia's demands had been simple and here we are acting like Russia is the bad guy. The Ukrainian Air Force inherited _sixty_ airworthy TU-22M and scrapped all of them mostly due to _American_ pressure, as the US tried not to irk the ruzzians. The same US who incidentally also signed the Budapest Memorandum, upholding and guaranteeing the Ukrainian Independence and Sovereignty. Just imagine the value of such aircraft in the current war! Anything the US may do to help Ukraine now is both due, and overdue. Lest we forget.

Also, before 2014 last 2 Ukrainian ministers of defences were actual Russian citizens and they left Ukraine as soon as the war started. Ukraine gave part of its Tu-22Ms, Tu-95MSs, Tu-160, and hundreds of missiles(Kh-55, Kh-22) to Russia, and the rest were scrapped under the agreement led by the US and it was not about nuclear arsenal at all. And yes, there was a significant responsibility of the Ukrainian government and people too.

Presumably it got hit and made it part of the way back to base but not all the way. Most anti-air missiles don't make the plane explode like they do in the movies, they have a proximity head that hits the plane like a shotgun blast. Fragments may damage vital parts of the plane but not make it crash immediately.

Wrong, this is a Russian VL (vertical landing) aircraft. The TO (take off) part is in development, still needs some testing. This landing was not perfect, next test is in flight smoking prohibited.

Don't be silly... there is no "friendly Fire" inside Russia... actually there should be No Fire inside Russia... The plane was obviously downed inside Ukraine 250 miles from the Russian border, after a bombing mission... It was trying to get back to Base but the Ukrainians got it... and will never have another "bombing mission"...
