Our next episode of Ukraine Through the Eyes of Others features John Sweeney, a British writer, reporter, and formerly investigative journalist at BBC, currently covering the Russian war against Ukraine. In this interview, he shares his thoughts on Russia’s systematic war crimes, his experience as a journalist covering Putin for years, and living and working in Ukraine during the full-scale invasion.

I did know John Sweeney, but (I am German) did not know about his incredible work and how long he has been fighting for the truth about Putin to come to public knowledge; he is stunning and has a fantastic sense of humour. John Sweeney, may your orange beanie never fade. I remember the first video reports I saw after the full scale invasion started. This zany English guy who understood the situation in Ukraine and explained it so earnestly and succinctly. I think you are one of the reasons I have become so emotionally invested in Ukraine. I visited Ukraine by myself in 2019 from the US and ABSOLUTELY fell in love!! Those were, hands down, some of the best weeks of my life! I lived near Maiden, rode the metro, went to Hydropark every day to swim in the Dnipro, saw a concert, went grocery shopping, checked some sites. I LOVE Ukraine! I've been following this war since 2014 and agree with John when he says it's just maddening to hear people, (ESPECIALLY Americans for me) side with Russia 🤯. It's so blatantly obvious what is going on!! And if someone questions my loyalty to Ukraine and brings up Russian propaganda points, it is hard to hold back from wanting to punch them square in the mouth lol. I just came across your video. Awesome John Sweeney interview. He says it like it is. I too can not understand how anyone can defend the horrific attacks, war crimes , and needless war. i've paused it here. Russians need to kneel as Willy Brandt did. My daily cry has been -HOW will my little half Russian grandson live with this shame brought upon his country by this evil regime. Wonderful, although sad, interview. John to me is the quintessence of good British traits: honest, witty, uncompromising. The world needs more journalists like him. Especially Italy. The Polish journalist and writer Krystyna Kurczab-Redlich (another top person) said in many interviews similar things about early Putin (apartment bombings, Chechen war atrocities). She was in Chechenia during the war, reported at the time on the atrocities committed by the Russians and also on the grave suspicions on the apartment bombings, killings of people who knew too much about it (etc), but no-one would listen. Blair supported putin in this first election and, in one particular occasion, refused to read a report on what the cremlin di**-head was up to. The queen met with putin, and so on and so on. John says something along the lines "we were stupid, we were blind" to disregard putin's crimes. In this regard I'd take issue with the use of "we", because it leads to a "we are all guilty" general amnesty. Not so. People in the know (head of state, secret services, people specializing in russia, high-level businesspeople, etc) DID know everything but THEY decided to play the appeasing game (or, which is even worse, because they got personal gain from the relation with russia and didn't care about anything else).

It’s not just Russians in Russia that have been zombified , I’ve had experience of a long time Russian friend in Britain who’s been “ turned” by her remaining family in Russia and is suddenly spouting nonsense about Nazis Nazis and the classic “ A Russian doesn’t need to read a book or newspaper , a Russian just knows the truth “.

as an aussie ,i love this man and his attitude and commitment to telling it as he sees it and he's got off his arse and had a look and talk with the people there . i also have a feeling he's carrying a huge amount of grief ,rage and outrage and despair/wounding . hope he deals with that and gets it resolved and free so it doesn't warp his reporting ability to stick to the truth. i suspect the only way to deal with men like vlad is to use spiritual power . fighting in the physical realm is really limited .the war is against principalities and power [thoughts, beliefs and mindsets ] we're dealing with a person that's been totally brutalised and is willing and used violence ,terror,and whatever else he can get his hands on to subdue his opponents .that person with that locked in mindset probably has contempt for the west and see's us a wimps . that's why he sticks his fingers up at us. he thinks he's free with this mindset [because it gives him no moral restraint . where is he's really locked himself in a cage .

Great Galloglass journalist. Calls himself British but he's very much an Irishman of the bravest, nicest sort. I DISAGREE ++++ with him about Navalny though. Navalny is over-ambitious and it affects deeply his decision making. Who in their right mind would return to Russia after being poisoned by the mafia leadership there. I really enjoyed this - Ms Tymoshenka the interviewer was good and drew some anecdotes from John Sweeney which I had not heard before. Unfortunately, I think that Sweeney's audience is now mostly those of us who are already aligned with his view that Russia is the main and very dangerous threat to world peace. My view may be influenced slightly by exceptional physical beauty (of Ms Tymoshenka, to be clear - sorry John). This looks like a good channel so I have subscribed.
