@@saamstaan6540 No, Russia would bomb their own pipeline, so they could blame someone else. Just like they always do. Putin NEVER accepts responsibility for his actions. @@user-hk8yp7cw1v Or more likely the US specifically, as they have no benefit from the pipeline whilst they also want Europe to support Ukraine more. With Germany and France being reluctant because of the gas, this would push them in that direction.

There's no pipelines from the US to Europe so it would be asinine to blow the pipelines while there are none to fill the void of sales. What's more likely is Gazprom sent some repair robots (they call them "pigs") with explosives on them down the pipelines and then blew them when the time was right. This gets Gazprom out of the contracts they have with Europe so that they can shut off the gas and oil sales to Europe faster than ever. Unfortunately for Russia all that will happen is the EU will further decrease their reliance on Russian energy in the future and maybe even dismantle the pipelines on their end

One important omission in the otherwise excellent analysis: The Baltic is not criss-crossed by pipelines, there's Nordstream 1 and 2 and the new Baltic Pipe that he mentioned, and that's basically it. But the North Sea _is_ criss-crossed by pipelines, many of which supplying the UK and the EU from the rich natural gas fields administered by Norway.

As a Swede I was always against this pipeline, unless we whould get to use it to. It is just a risk for us and no potential gain. The island of Gotland for example could have gotten gas from it. Fortuenatly we don'y use much gas and even less so Russian gas/oil... Sweden is suspicious of Russia normally. This regime and it's agression on Ukraine really makes Russia very impopular here. If Russia does not help wityh the Nordstream leak propely I hope we prioitise sending Archer artierlly uits to Ukarine in response.

Bara spekulationer. Eller har Ryssarna tagit på sig dådet? Vilka andra kan tänkas ligga bakom det? U.S.A? Saudi?

Professor Clarke starts by saying that Russia is the only country that has anything to gain from this then goes straight on to say what a huge mistake and "own goal" it was and then tries to smooth over that contradiction by suggesting that Russia did it to show it could damage any pipeline. So Russia destroyed its only leverage over the EU to make that point?? Really?? A more logical conclusion, surely, is that it was done by someone who wants to keep the EU in the fight, as they are now unable to do a deal that involves Russian gas, for the foreseeable future, anyway.

Excellent analysis. Another potential theory about the explosions that have damaged the Nord Stream pipelines: could Gazprom, the Russian State corporation who operate the pipelines, have sabotaged them to create an excuse for not meeting their contractual obligations to supply gas? Damage or an "accident" might be seen as a force majeur incident (out of their control) that prevents them from meeting their commitments/gives them a legal reason not to be held accountable for breaking their contract? They could have done this fior example by strapping some explosives to the devices they send through the pipes to clear and inspect them (so-called "pigs")?
@ChrisVillagomez

Since countries like Germany and France were reluctant to help Ukraine because they didn't want to lose the gas, isn't it possible that the act was committed by a party that wants to force Germany and France to lose the biggest thing holding them back, as well as driving an irreversible wedge between them and Russia, since it will force them to quickly wean from Russia's gas and find an alternate means of energy production? In other words, I disagree that Russia is the only party that can benefit from this.
@pelleban

I have had this exact same thought, my initial thought when this happened was that Ukraine was behind this. With the pipeline destroyed there is no reason for Europe to push for peace talks with the Russian Dictator to get the gas turned back on. Call me cynic but I belive some Europe countries might want to let Ukraine leave some bits of land to save themselves. Now we are all all in.

He is absolutely right, no European government would want to do it. I believe the culprit is either the CIA or Gazprom. Both have a motive and the capabilities to execute. US benefits from the EU ending all energy trade with Russia, it pushes the EU even further into US sphere of influence and makes it dependent on its LNG. Gazprom's motive is avoiding massive fines for breaching contract for not honoring gas supplies to EU customers, if the pipeline is damaged, it gives it a clause and a way out.
