If someone showed me this just 3 years ago, I'd have thought this is a scene from a start of a scifi disaster/war movie. It's still so surreal that this kind of news has become the new reality. We are in living in strange times...

Yes, his amazingly non-biased analysis that the ONLY POSSIBLE explanation is that Russia blew up their own pipelines (that they could just switch off at their end), but didn't blow up Norway or Denmark's pipelines really exemplifies what sets Western media apart.

I see many comments below asking why Professor Clarke doesn't have his own show on Sky News, and the truth is that he used to. In the earlier days of the war, Sky News presented a weekly Q&A show featuring Dr. Clarke but, for some reason, it ended after only a few episodes. It was far and away my most reliable source for comprehensive news on the conflict, and I dearly wish Sky News would bring it back!

I usually like Mr. Clarke's analyses but I find his statement that "the only credible culprit is Russia" is lacking. There are other possible countries which may be the culprit as they have something to gain. Ukraine because it is a way to ensure that Russia cannot benefit from gas sales to Europe and because it solidifies arms support for Ukraine by reducing Russian leverage over Europe as the winter sets in. Poland and Norway because it eliminates a competitor with the new pipeline that goes into commission today and provides a means of hampering Russian leverage over Germany and Europe in particular (Russia is historically a bitter enemy for Poles). The USA because it vowed earlier this year to shut down Nordstream 2, which in turn ups the market for US liquified gas while keeping Europe in line with its support for the Ukraine war. Russia has little to gain by sabotaging its own pipelines when it could simply just turn off the taps to put pressure on Europe while providing the carrot of turning them back on if sanctions or arms shipments to Ukraine are reduced or lifted. Saying that only Russia could be the culprit is an unreasonable stretch. Hopefully they will be able to find some evidence as to who did this and why.

I’ve heard several sources say that Russia blew up this pipeline but not a single one gave any specific reason why they would do it. @salmonnnnman
@salmonnnnman Жыл бұрын
The contractual obligation element is compelling (i.e. they can legally breach supply contracts if there is no possibility to operate), or the argument that it is a threat against the recently completed Scandinavian lines (essentially an open act of war against NATO) but I'm not 100% sure I buy it....they sort of had leverage before, and the possibility to continue to put the squeeze on us in Europe with the promise of easing the pressure if we curtail our support (or at least slow it). Now they have guaranteed that they will never again supply the EU with gas. A dead pipeline will take as long to fix as it will take to find other solutions (presumably years) I don't get it? Surely if the Russians blew the pipes, they have only provided motivation for us to accelerate support in the hope that Russia collapses and we can start to deal with a less hostile leader. No one gets any gas now no matter the political situation

They need to figure out a way to escalate the conflict but create enough plausible deniability that they can blame the West for the escalation. It's been their propaganda strategy since the start of the war. If they just turned the pipeline off, then obviously it's them and no one can else be blamed for it. But if they blow up their own gasline they can spin it like someone else was involved and they are the victims. Considering the amount of unrest that's going on in Russia right now keeping up appearances for the sake of the propaganda narrative is just as important as anything else in this conflict from their perspective.

People don't understand the Wagner group and how they get paid. They are NOT an army under Russian control, they are a mercenary group that gets a mission, and then agrees to be paid to perform that mission. The current Wagner contract with Russia requires them to provide an offensive push west of Donetsk. This ' offensive' on Bahkmut has been going on for 4 months now. The Wagner group won't take any other contracts. Those mercenaries aren't going to be sent to Kherson.. they will just keep barely pushing on Bahkmut because that is what is in their contract. So Russia has a problem, they either keep paying Wagner to continue that offensive, or they stop paying them and Donetsk collapses. Russia can't just redirect them at will, that requires new contracts which Wagner has refused.

Wagner group is in specialized status, but not under Russia's control? Sorry, man! In Russia there is no independent business'is, all are under control of Kreml. Prigozhin get a special task from Putin to create such a group for delicate operations on the abroad. They got all their weapons and other stuff from Russian army (of course they can by some from the West), they are trained in Russian army training-bases. There is not a small piece of military outside control of Kreml in Russia.
@PeterSedesse
@PeterSedesse Жыл бұрын
@@zasmirko100 That is all true, but they are also contracted to do individual missions, and they can accept or reject those missions. Their current mission is to push from the east, through Bahkmut to the two remaining large cities in Donetsk. It is a futile task as the presentor said, as while they might take Bahkmut, they will never make it to the large cities. And as I said, they rejected everything else, so Putin has two choices, continue to pay them to attack Bahkmut, or watch them go home. It is the same as the Chechnyans, they were paid for individual missions like the assault on Severndonetsk, but once that mission was over, they did not accept another mission and went back to rear. The misconception people have is they are mercenaries who are absorbed into the normal operations of the russian army, they are not.

Both Nord Stream pipelines were not in use, although they had some gas pressure, as it would make restarting operations much quicker and easier. Europe not buying, despite 'winter is coming' threats. Other customers like India are now at or near capacity. If Russia cannot increase volume sold it needs to push price up to get enough income to fund mobilisation. Surprise surprise these exposions have pushed up the wholesale price of gas.

I don’t really understand how that would help Russia. Prices go up for everyone selling gas but now Russia can’t sell gas through the pipeline. I don’t support Russia but I do support logic. I would think the US would benefit from this a lot, it keeps Germany from folding and begging Russia to reopen the pipes.

@@chedderburg Russia hasn't been using the pipelines for months, they need money now, so driving up the prices for short-term gain makes perfect sense. Putin is a politician after all and their all about short-term gain.

It does highlight how vulnerable the whole infrastructure is though, imagion if someone were to sabotage the new nordic pipeline in the middle of the upcoming winter things could get nasty real quick in europe.

@@marczhu7473 Russia does have motives, their economy needs help to mobilise (increased gas prices would do that), and the explosions occurred just as the new pipeline from Norway opened (it wasn't a few days before, it was the exact same day), sounds like a threat. If the USA did it, they would have done it weeks ago, and Norway wants people to use their pipeline, not be worried that it will explode.
