The two-day Ukraine Peace Conference begins today in Switzerland, immediately after the G7 summit. Representatives from 92 countries are coming together to discuss the first steps of a peace process for Ukraine. Invitations to Russian President Vladimir Putin were deliberately omitted because the conference is based on the peace plan of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Before the summit, Putin demanded that Ukraine give up four regions and the Crimean peninsula and abandon its ambitions to join NATO as a precondition for a ceasefire. However, this would be tantamount to capitulation.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz was critical of Putin's controversial peace offer and stressed that peace would only be acceptable if it preserved the integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. He also made it clear that the G7 summit had agreed on a comprehensive financial support package for Ukraine. This was a clear signal to Ukraine that it could rely on the support of the G7 states and a warning to Putin that he should not expect support for Ukraine to diminish. Scholz called for
