Ukraine warns of WW3 ahead of long-stalled Congress aid vote | BBC News

Ukraine's prime minister has said there will be a "Third World War" if Ukraine loses its conflict with Russia.
Denys Shmyhal urged the US Congress to pass a long-stalled foreign aid bill, which has $61bn (£49bn) earmarked for Kyiv.
The House of Representatives is set to vote on the package this Saturday.
Mr Shmyhal expressed "careful optimism" that US lawmakers would pass the hotly contested measure.

Are you being purposefully dim? They are not claiming to be so important. They are saying if they lose this war then Russia will be emboldened to attack more European states in an attempt to recoup dominions lost in the breakup of the soviet union. THAT outcome would indeed trigger WW3. They got away with it in 1945 because neither the UK nor the US had the military power to reverse their occupation of eastern Europe following years of war against the Nazis and Japan. Then they kept on gambling, and have kept on losing. As long as Ukraine wants to continue to gamble it all, the only thing we have the power to do is to delay their losses. That's it. Ukraine doesn't seek peace, or end to the war. They want victory. 100% victory. Nothing less is acceptable to them. The more this goes on, the less we can help them in the end. Oh well, we don't have the power to make Ukraine do anything, so it isn't really our responsibility. They were happy to be puppets for us, we could certainly help them negotiate and provide leverage so they don't lose everything. That's their best option, but if they were going to take that option they would have done it far sooner and saved infinitely more.

People said the same thing about Chechnya - but Russia didn't win in Chechnya so much as convince a local figure to become their puppet authority there. Ukraine is VASTLY larger and more populous than Chechnya. So ye - Russia is by no means guaranteed a victory, especially when you take note of how much their military hardware stocks have been depleted in just 2 years of war, and how low quality it all was from day 1. The Ukrainians are also more inventive in warfare vs their Russian counterparts, as well as having the defenders spirit to drive them, vs the conscripted Russians marching forward with the guns of their commanders trained on them if they show dissent. If Russia was guaranteed to win it wouldn't even be making a show of trying for peace talks.

As Ukrainian resources themselves note, recently the number of Ukrainian military personnel who surrendered has increased, and if it were not for the barrier detachments of nationalists, there would have been even more of them. There are several reasons for this, the main ones being: reluctance to fight, since the majority was mobilized by force, as well as the successes of the Russian army, which is steadily moving forward. And the effect of Russian weapons should not be discounted. Better to be captured than to have an air bomb on your head.
