Agreed. The problem is, how much to do the troops know about the _actual_ geopolitical reality of what's happening? And how much _can they_ know? Putin, monster that he is, has done a fine job insulating his people from global dissent, and now they see and hear only what he wants them to. Judging from the phone intercepts I've seen, these Russians are usually pretty shocked when they finally get out to the front. It's nothing like they were told it was going to be. These Russian soldiers are a threat to the existential security of Ukraine, they shouldn't be there, and I support the brave Ukrainians in their fight for survival against them. But I can't outright celebrate when I see Russians being killed in footage like this. I recognize the necessity, but I won't celebrate it. The whole damn thing is madness.

I wonder if the guy who took the grenade in his face was attempting that thing where a person jumps on a grenade to save everyone else. I've watched enough footage of Russian soldiers callously disregarding their wounded comrades, running off while the wounded crawl unaided, to understand how "camaraderie" is in short supply among their ranks, but might that have been the one noble dude in the entire Russian military? Just statistically, there's got to be at least a couple. My best guess is he was either attempting that, or he was attempting to toss it out of the trench. Or...maybe he was just profoundly stupid. I think he was _likely_ (?) attempting to toss it, but clearly the clock ran out. War is hell, man. I hope the Ukrainians push the Russians out sooner than later. I understand the necessity, but I'm no fan of violence.
