how do you look at a bunch of scorch marks on the ground and start talking about data handling facilities and western components and irreplaceable skilled technicians when everything looks completely intact? guess maybe the scorch marks are actually su-57s and nuclear submarines along with the big one on the left being the briefcase carrying the nuclear launch codes and the result of vlad himself spontaneously combusting. looks like another one of those situations like with the refineries and the bridge where the repair time goes from 3 months to 500 years due to the loss of access to western consultants and the need to relearn technologies such as welding and concrete work and oil refining from scratch. and with those launch codes being lost forever, surely we can expect that russia won't be able to launch their nukes for at least a few generations until their society figures out complex and difficult concepts such as counting and writing down numbers all over again in order to come up with new launch codes sometime within the next century. clearly we are looking at a total russian collapse and crimea victory beach party coming up very soon. wishful thinking level 100/100

The equipment at the back could be power supply and cooling equipment. High-powered radars need quite a bit of cooling if you don't want to fry the electronics, and at a minimum cooling helps avoid excessive "noise" in your returns that you send off for signals processing and analysis. You don't really need to damage the array itself, which might be tricky given their lattice-like structure. Just knock out the power and cooling units and that big old radar is down until they're replaced 👍🏻
@chriswareham
@chriswareham 21 күн бұрын
The array itself is largely passive equipment as well, quite straightforward and relatively easy to repair. The support equipment is the more fragile and difficult to repair part of the system. Much of this is Soviet in design and construction, and almost impossible to replace.

We used to have CT scanners (medical) the computerroom had to stay below 28C otherwise it would have to shut down, at risk of major damage. I guess this could be the same. On top of the grey containers it looks like there are airco fans. Kill the electronics, you’ll kill the radar system.

Then just single jet could bring all of them down. Those attacks Ukraine is doing just shows how insanely poor Russian detection capabilities really are. But this isn't exactly news, we all know that inside Russia things are just one step above stone age. No modern anything there. Not even proper plumbing....there is of course possibility that Ukraine has punched a hole in Russian perimeter radars and it just has not been in any news because apparently nothing important was being hit. Thank you, Suchomimus, for this rather interesting analysis. I am glad you decipher it, as I can never figure out the before - after that are often quite grainy. You could have told me that the black marks were just shadows from the clouds, I would believe you. You forgot to attach the Ukraine Volunteer Center video, so anyone interested: look at it in yesterday's videos 🤗 🇺🇦 Перемоги і миру всім українцям! 🇺🇦

For systems like these the antennae are relatively cheap and easy to replace. The electronics that interfaces with them is the valuable and hard to replace part. For this radar that likely resides in the low structures at the rear. (At 01:19 the vertical white "pipes" along the left side of the sloped antenna support are probably the antenna feed lines.)

That is my understanding as well. I read the electronics is the tricky part and that this kind of radar was constructed before it could be made effective. Electronics made all the difference.

Well, you can pause and do that yourself. It's nicer that way because then you can take as much time as you want to. Tho I do agree that it would be nice to have the image flip back and forth when some particular difference is just being brought up.

A dated observation, but at the time Mathias Rust flew a Cessna into Red Square (May, 1987), the Soviets were quick to claim that they had in fact been tracking the aircraft for nearly its entire flight, but chose not to take action. I always suspected these claims were disingenuous.

A radar is just a glorified wire bundle. You can literally jerry-rig a half-decent repair with a pair of pliers if you know the system well enough. It's the amplifiers mounted on the back or on the ground a few meters behind, which are the expensive parts. Let's hope that's what got creamed.

What's wild is that it's not even a specialized drone or missile, let alone ATACMS. If it's like the others they've been using for long-distance work, it's a slow-as-hell converted Cessna-172 or rough equivalent.

@1:20 The buildings appear to be housing high power amplifier and cooling for those amplifiers. All of that RF combines together for electronically and actively steered beams. Even if the antenna array is unscathed, damage to the amplifiers and/or cooling will take that site down for a while.

This looks like a phased array radar with the cheese wedge being the array. Directly behind is mostly plumbing for all the array elements. Somewhere there will be computing and switching equipment. It is a valid target but it would be nice to follow the principle of "You have to get them all" or was that Pokémon? Either way getting that far with drones is quite an achievement. More damage the merrier.

This is obviously a phased array radar. The antenna array by itself is relatively simple, with hundreds or thousands of identical antenna elements. The processing equipment to extract information from all those antenna elements is extremely much more complicated, with large piles of processors and other electronics.
