Sadly, Yuri Shevchenko died in March from pneumonia, trapped in his basement as Kyiv prepared for a siege. I had the great honour of knowing Yuri, the musical collaborator of our dance group, Ukrainian Shumka Dancers, for almost 30 years. Such a huge loss not only for Ukraine but for all music lovers. What a legacy. This piece is heart rending. Tragedy upon tragedy. But what a bonus for us that we’re now hearing music from an incredible catalogue of classical music from Ukraine. We hear you. Almost unbearably exquisite to listen to. What a powerful arrangement, made all the moreso in the knowledge that its composer died in a bunker in Kyiv ahead of the Russian invasion. This is precisely why Ukraine will not be defeated. Slava Ukraini, slava heroyam!
