It’s one of the last fighters we could have ever imagined it being integrated onto. It was a stretch when they put it on the Viper. I thought the natural progression would have been on the F-15E with a Wild Weagle.

There is a bit of a fun detail in the HUD repeater on the right side of the cockpit that shows the weapon system recognizes the HARM as an R-27. The HUD repeater indicates "27PE", which is the extended range anti radiation version of the R-27 (AA-10 Alamo-F), so it is imagining it as a weapon of a roughly similar class. I wonder if this has any effect on its operation.

Remember that the Russian letter "Р" is the same as the Latin letter "R"; the Russian letter for "P" is "П". The 27PE is in fact the designation for the R-27RE (sometimes listed as R-27ER), the extended range SARH version of the missile. The R-27R, R-27ER, R-27T, and R-27ET are the main production versions of the missile, while the various other types (EA, the active radar version, and PE, the anti-rad version) didn't see any production.

@@Xeno426 Instead of assuming incompetence or inability to read cyrillic on my part, you could actually look at the original video in high quality and see for yourself that the HUD repeater indicates "27ПЭ" on all shown HARM launches, and in other general flight snippets too. Bring up the original video for higher quality, slow it down to 0.25 and see at 0:24, 0:32 and 0:52 respectively.

No your wrong pal! Apparently the Ukrainians working with retheon have got some emulator code into the Russian based system to recognize the harm as an R27. It limits the harm to been pre programed on the ground to target a specific type of radar. But as long as it is a specific type of radar been targeted by the mission it does the job

I just wanted to point out that throughout the video we see three different airframes. One of them is the modernized MiG-29MU1, with a color MFD (that seems to be getting shunned in favor of a commercial Garmin GPS unit installed over it). You can easily tell this model by the missing dash cover (removed to bolt a couple of extra switches on top) and missing distinctive, elongated housing of the HUD repeater on the right. This is not the plane that shoots HARMs, it remains a pure fighter. The one that does shoot HARMS appears to be a normal, unmodernized MiG-29 model 9-13 with its original HUD repeater (which is how we see the plane thinks the HARM is an R-27EP in the first place). So that means two things: 1, They chose the less capable machines to become their "Wild Weasels", while retaining their upgraded ones as pure fighters. 2, There seems to be a fair degree of communication going on between the HARM and the avionics. The R-27EP (not to be confused with R-27ER) is a PRH missile that can pursue the strongest source of radiation after launch (think Sparrow in FLOOD mode), or even receive data from the Berioza RWR unit. Doubtful they actually got the HARM to listen to the Beryoza but who knows. Nothing will surprise me anymore, we're seeing some Tom Clancy shenigans as it is.

This is great stuff. One of the things I didn't catch was that the missile was identifying as an R-27EP, which is the long-burn antiradiation version of the R-27, with a NATO codename of AA-10F. The US never fielded an air to air anti radiation missile, and while semi active missiles have the ability to do home on jam, a jamming signal is a pretty strong point source. It is possible that by hijacking the existing anti radiation weapon's control software, that the system could provide some targeting feedback to the pilot, making it more lethal. I'm just not familiar at all with the weapon system or its interface, and certainly not able to guess. As always, if you're a Russian air defense guy, your best bet is to shut down an go home.

One thing that didn't occur to me at the time was that this architecture could also be used to put the missile on other Ukrainian fighters, like the Su-24 FENCER. If Ukraine has any FENCER-E left, that would be an interesting combination.

From "Jane's how to fly and fight in the Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrum" by Jon Lake pg 39. "Even if 2 SARH guided missiles are carried they may both be fired together espessially if the fight is about to go from a bvr joust to a close in knife fight. The reason for this is simple, if only one missile is fired leaveing one alamo on the launch aircraft the remaining missile imposes severe limitations on the aircraft. With a asymmetric underwing load of that sort the MiG-29 is limited to 15 degrees AoA instead of 24 degrees.

I think that in AA mode, the MiG-29 has a launch authorisation override function which would allow to shoot R-27 outside of weapon system computed solution. That would probably allow to shoot HARM if the MiG-29 thinks it’s R-27.

Jo Jo, that sounds like what was, in the F-4, the "interlocks out" function which allowed the AIM-7 to be free out of its programmed launch parameters. That would make sense. It still leaves open the question of whether the two-shot sequence is an artifact of the weapons system or a deliberate launch sequence by the pilot.

The MiG-29 and Su-27 use a different launching procedures for the pilot than the western ones use. Soviets designed the system to be automated to ease the process. Air-to-Air missiles can be launched in pairs to maximize the probability of hit, but primary is in single mode. The weapons control panel has a own knob for the weapons release count, as in single, pairs, selected stations or all the type. For unguided weapons like rockets and bombs it works for all, but for guided weapons it is just one at the time when firing signal is given by trigger, or it is in pairs if the type is same. Example of the design type. In the stick the pilot has a up/down switch, that is used to select a Air-to-Air weapon type. It switch between a "Long Range" and "Short Range". The pilot doesn't need to know or think what type of missile is to be used, just think is he close to the target or not, and select based to that and the system selects optimal for the target based its range (if that information is available), but can be overriden. So example if a plane has a R-27 and R-73 loaded, the switch in forward position will launch a R-27 missile, and in aft the system selects R-73. The priority of station select goes from outward to inward, and they work in pairs as in left/right, left/right etc to keep the balance. But in the throttle there is a button for pinky to press, and that allows the pilot to switch between the next station, so pilot can launch in right, right, left, left, left, right if so wanted. It allows pilot to select wanted weapon type if carrying multiple in different seeker or method, so example with rockets or bombs. In the HUD there is at bottom a row of the symbols signaling pilot visually what is the next station used to be for launch. And in older planes same is with a own station instrument with green/yellow lights as well. When it comes to same missiles like R-27, but with a different seeker like T or R, the system prioritize it by the pilot choice of primary targeting sensor. In the Su-27 and MiG-29 family planes, the pilot doesn't decide what sensor to use as only one, but all the sensors are working together to back each other up. Example, the IRST sensor in front of the canopy is always On, you don't select it or deselect it. The radar is similar way always used, but pilot can choose to stop its emissions and turn it a passive radar if wanted. But pilot choose which one is the primary sensor that will acquire the ranging and vector, and then other is the backup for it. This design makes it example impossible to notch the radar as the IRST is always tracking the target as long it can detect its IR emission. So when the radar is the primary sensor used for search and track, the IRST is supporting it with own and radar is used for acquiring targets and selecting a radar guided weapon for its purpose. When the IRST is selected as primary, the IR guided weapon is chosen automatically and radar is to support IRST to get a range if IRST laser ranging doesn't get reading. These pilots selects example in Su-27S (first serial production variant) front of the throttle in the targeting system panel, where are as well the settings for radar scan cone direction (as example 60 degree left, 60 degree ahead, 60 degree to right) and then a target altitude difference knob in kilometers, defaults to 0 separation, so radar or IRST will search target always co-alt. The knob goes from +/-10 km. And that is different from the western planes radar scan elevation selection by degree and then looking the radar scope for the scan volume top/bottom altitude values for given range at the B-scope view. In the Soviet design when you selected example -2 km altitude, the radar centered the scan to that altitude. So if example pilot was tasked to chase a cruise missile while flying at 3000 above sea level, the pilot set the scan to -3 and radar performed the scan pattern to cover that sea level altitude from closest possible range to selected range. The targeting system sub-modes are as well in that panel, like vertical scan, missile boresight, HMS and in-HUD. So if pilot example wanted to perform a stealthy IR missile launch, then set first the radar not to emit (western Freeze), IRST as primary and select "Long Range" launch and lock target. And if wanted to launch a two missiles at the same time, select the release mode as "pairs" or other, and keep trigger down for IIRC longer than 250 milliseconds and system launch the second automatically. There are pilots manuals for the SPO-15 (far more capable than said here), Su-27SK and MiG-29 9.12 export model. It is as well that MIL-STD-1553 databus standard is the standard in Russian aviation, they as well adopted it. I don't recall top of my head what was the Russian standardization name but it is same. What makes possible for Russian companies to offer their fighters for a NATO countries as the avionics are compatible for all the weapons and pods. It is years when I read multiple thesis about this compatibility layering.

A defecting Russian MiG29 pilot disclosed many details to his Western hosts. In describing air to air combat, he explained that the Fulcrum wasn’t aerodynamically stable enough for asymmetric load outs. Pilots would fire one, and then another missile (from opposite wing stations). They could also use a “hammer down” mode, with finger pressed & the system would loose two missiles as soon as a target lock was acquired… This was in the 1980s. The Fulcrum he flew was an early copy & probably the equivalent of the older planes in Ukraine’s inventory. This same defector briefed USAF and Navy crews before the start of the 90-91 Gulf War. The AGM 88 is a large missile (at least as big as the then Soviet A2A missiles) so the challenges of asymmetry should carry over.

Regarding assymetrical firing: in 2004 I had an F16 demo pilot out of DC tell me when the Migs fired they had to fire two missiles. I looked for sources of this and never found much regarding the Mig29 but maybe this is what he was referring to. I'm also wondering if they fire 2 just for better chances of a hit.

Taking down a mach 2 flying object it is difficult itself,but taking down a missile is very tricky. If shooting down a HIMARS is technically possible but the stars must align to get the job done. I would said it is the same thing for a HARM missile,it would be almost impossible to intercept in time by a SAM system. It would be easy to get a safe route for the HARM,if you are programing them on the ground it means your intel is spot on.

Mil-Std 1760 is not a data bus. It is a standardized interface (including hardware) that includes power, discretes, analog (e.g. video, GPS, etc.), data bus (e.g. 1553) and even has a fiber optic option. Mil-Std 1553B is the standard that defines just the Manchester Bi-phase, 1 MHz bus that avionics, weapons and sensors use to exchange digital information. And, YES, HARMs ARE sexy!

I have no doubt that from prior U.S exploitation and intel gained from acquired Soviet / Russian assets like Mig-29’s and SU-27’s that the U.S would of provided the intel to Ukraine on how to best integrate the HARM to the Mig-29’s systems along with software programming of the missiles and launchers, particularly in such a short timeframe. Obviously not confirmed in anyway, just pure speculation from what is known. Thanks once again Steve and Starbaby for the great insight. Looking forward to the livestream.

I saw a story where the US modified Migs, picked up in the 90's, to use a HARM for something to do with MIG aggressor rigups,, for something like the Top Gun type programs. That was the gist of it that I saw, basically they had made all the stuff to do this already, handed it all to Ukraine and said here it is for you, just do this. Can't remember who the author said it was exactly, like DARPA or someone.to that effect.

I believe they've been using harms against early warning radars and less mobile SAM systems with based on information which they get from usa and uk sigint-elint efforts.usa and uk have been giving airspace picture, hva positions,naval target positions etc. to the ukrainians since first day.

I apologize if I missed this in a different video but do we have any idea why the Russians are not using their AWACS as much as you would expect a Western Air Force to do so? I don't think anyone is questioning that the Russians could keep a CAP up enough to protect a couple of them, it just seems very perplexing to me that they don't seem to be going that route.

It's very interesting seeing Russians in action compared to how they're modelled in computer games. Obviously the fog of war is nearly impenetrable, but the fact is, IRL they sure don't have the same capability as they do in games! Watching Bayraktars kill active looking Buk's was the first sign that their AA systems weren't quite what they're made out to be. As of now? Clearly there are huge capability gaps in even their more modern platforms! Get to work programming stupid into Ru adversaries coders! At least add a 0 behind every OODA loop XD
