I still dont understand when to use Y and B when it comes to vowels and without vowels, it makes no sense to me.

To be honest, most Ukrainians wouldn't even notice if you confused "у" and "в". 😅😅 But the idea of this rule is avoiding clusters of consonants or vowels for easier pronunciation and for more pleasant sound. A consonant should be followed by a vowel, and a vowel should be followed by a consonant, this way the language will sound more melodic. Obviously, it is not always possible to put a consonant after a vowel, but if there is a possibility to use "в" instead of "у" for the phrase to sound more pleasant, why not. But IMHO, it is not that important, I wouldn't worry about these two prepositions.
