They were always Ukrainian to me even though they spoke Russian. This war is pure insanity. I truly hope that Ukraine regains every inch of land Putin stole.

That‘s the difference to Russian troops who get lost if the commander of a unit is killed and they don‘t know what to do. The Russian command system is completely outdated. No one dares to take initiatives on the battlefield, all troop commanders push the responsibility up to the division commander, who therefore has to be very close to the front and that is why many commanders have already fallen. The Ukrainian army has learned a lot since 2014. The initiative of small units and their members is an essential element of success.

@THE PILGRIM That depends on your ROE established ahead of time. Typically you should take care not to engage in situations where you don't want to give away your position, are up against a superior sized force, risk to hitting civilians or friendlies, or when you can't positively identify who the target is. *Weapons Free* is the order given to engage all positively identified hostiles on sight. *Weapons Tight* is only to engage at the discretion of the commander. *Weapons Hold* is only engage in self defense. You change your control measures depending on the environment you are in and the mission.

I’m glad to hear their gunner fired on the enemy without waiting for the Commander’s direction….. Disciplined initiative…something the Russians never had and post-soviet armies struggle with. As someone who deployed in support of Atlantic resolve and have trained with Eastern European armies I can assure the American tax payers that our money is well spent. Most post soviet armies enlisted ranks go to E6. Ukraine goes to E9. This is because after the 2014 Crimean invasion Ukraine asked for Western help to overhaul their military and model it around the concept of an NCO corps which in Western militaries is the backbone of an organization. The biggest success far more than the javelins, himars, and m777s is the NCOs that take the initiative to use these weapons to creat chaos with the enemy. The years we spent training the Ukrainian military has translated to success on the battlefield. We must continue to support Ukraine. They are showing that NATO military training and support is superior if given to the appropriate and receptive nation.

@Jonathan Wetters Your Nato commanders have just declared their supported Ukrainian force has lost roughly 100k soldiers on par with Russia's 100k loss of soldiers. So, how exactly is your special training and equipment superior when your losses are the same as your enemy? Civilian casualties atm are roughly 6000 btw. So, I would listen to the civilians on how to best survive in war torn Ukraine before I would ever listen to Nato trained soldiers or Russian soldiers who are killing each other 1 for 1.

@Josh j I’m sure everyone that didn’t agree with the Taliban and were murdered bonded quite peacefully. I’m glad you didn’t pay the US any attention. You miscalculated and invaded Ukraine because you believe your own propaganda and thought your Army was ready for a real war. All you have done was make the world forget about America’s withdrawal while we watch the 100k plus casualties you have incurred fighting what your intel believed was a 3 day “special military operation.” Thanks for that. The only thing special is how corrupt your leaders are and how not fielded your Ratnik program is. Where are the 2k T-14s you were supposed to have built? Your troops don’t even have optics and the AK-12 is at 1990s US military level. Body armor is steel plates (if your troops get them) that can’t stop 380ACP. Honestly my confidence in US military capabilities since the invasion has never been higher. Russia certainly does not want to meet the US on a battle field. Maybe we need another battle of Khasham.

My dad hired him after the war and employed him through his retirement, even though he became an alcoholic. Bud was always a sweet man (as my dad said he was in their youth) but was very jumpy, and after hearing the few battle stories he shared when I was a teen, I understood why. These tankers are in a similar position - big, high-value target confined by their equipment, in a complex battlefield. Hats off to Ukrainian crews - may your victory come soon, and you return in freedom and safety to your home fires.

@Gary Gray Not sure about your percentages of wanting to be integrated with EU. Maybe you don't watch Russian news with a VPN, but there were many Russian crowds with mothers waving their sons off with Russian flags supporting this war, despite the Western coverage of Russians escaping to avoid the draft. Why, if Russian, would you support the Wests moves on the Ukraine's untapped and rare earths resources, and them supplying billions of dollars, updating the Ukraine's military and allowing the UK to train Ukraine soldiers (happened since 2015) to make Russia a more vulnerable and economically worse off place? Which would be bad for every Russian? I don't want to get into the bias of each country's media, but I do want to pick on the one good point you have made. Yes, that would be a win if Putin failed and was succeeded in a coup more western friendly. However, I doubt that's going to happen, as the people surrounding Putin are even more hard-line and more likely to use greater force. Survival will always provoke humans to take more risk than just greed, and risk will win the war.
Gary Gray2 ай бұрын
@RoderickTheRed The way it's been going for 9 mos now if Russia's military continues to get beaten down with massive war dead, loss of equipment and humiliated maybe Putin's inner circle will get exasperated and decide just to get rid of the guy once and for all. Putin's a relic of the old Soviet USSR. Probably 90% of Russians want to be integrated with Eu for its freedom and prosperity. Most of the population of Russia is to the west and geographically are part of Eu and that's where they belong and they know it.
RoderickTheRed2 ай бұрын
@Gary Gray To answer your Nuke theory. It's not that simple. My dissertation for my economics degree was on M.A.D and how the most stable time in our history was when the Soviets, in 1949, developed their first nuclear bomb. That now is beginning to not be the case with the development of so many Tactical nuclear weapons - of which Russia has more than NATO combined; potentially including more advanced ones. It's no longer the case that if one tactical nuclear weapon is fired on the battle ground that a government would press the doomsday button. Only someone very naive would think this. Trump realised this when he was in office, and widened the budget, but was it too late? Putin may well have struck at precisely the right time. Not that they would be used, but it's a psychological card up the sleeve. There would be an unacceptable number of deaths on the battlefield should NATO put boots on the ground - in theory, without doomsday weapons being used, as there would be no incentive to wipe out the human race even if you were losing.
RoderickTheRed2 ай бұрын
@Gary Gray No side can truly win it - only claim winning it. We may never know who won it. There is a seminar by a professor somewhere on KZbin from 2015, that explains the troubles in the Ukraine and Crimea. He said, Putin doesn't need to invade the Ukraine. He just has to wreck it every few years to halt the West taking advantage of all the untapped resources it offers. People do not want to invest in unstable countries. However, the Russians leaving Ukraine will be seen as a victory for the Ukraine. My guess is, from reading all the news, not just western news, is that Russia will agree to leave in return for keeping the Crimea, a secret agreement for opening up canal routes to supply it with water, and some agreement not to join NATO. That is a win for Russia, but the Ukraine will claim a win in driving the Russians out.
Gary Gray2 ай бұрын
Russia can never win this. Not with Ukraine being backed by 40 countries around the world including NATO. And Putin knows that just by the use of one single nuke then Russia gets vaporized.

A lot of the more modern tanks, like the Leopard II, M1 Abrams, and Challenger 2, use 120mm rounds which cost about $4,000 a piece. Some tanks with larger shells like the a lot of the Russian tanks, use 125mm rounds which can cost about $6,500. The Ukrainians use 50 rounds a day. That is 200,000 a day on 120mm tank rounds, and 325,000 for 50 of the 125mm rounds.

But I don't have jelly in my head and I don't confuse the concepts of good and evil. And unlike you, I will not justify cruelty in any form. And Stalin really was a tyrant. @Kate Debt And what else could be written there in early 1941? Nobody knew about Nazi death camps then. Almost no one knew about the plans of genocide for Jews and Gypsies and slavery for all other peoples. All successes of Wehrmacht in 1939-1940 were quick and almost without civilian losses. In contrary, Ukrainians knew far too well about Red Terror of 1917-1921 lead by Bolsheviks, about the occupation of the Ukrainian People Republic in 1921 and stripping almost a quarter of Ukrainian land to Russia (Belgorod region, half of Bryansk, Kursk and Voronezh regions and Kuban' Kray are in Russia since 1921). Ukrainians had far too much losses from artificial famines of 1922-1924 and 1931-1933 made by Soviet government when about 8 million Ukrainians were starved to death. Ukrainians felt far too well the terror of GULAG where millions of absolutely innocent Ukrainians were drawn. Don't judge with your present knowledge of history. And even so composed Declaration was resent by Nazis right in June 1941 and all naive hopes for the Ukrainian independence in alliance with Nazis were squashed once and for good.

I'm an old one time U.S Army tanker- the Pickel Battalion 3/33 3rd Armor. Ayers Kaserne (M60 - I was the Loader on the #2 Tank in the 1971 TCQC in Germany. My Colonel's track was #1 - because they covertly punched extra rounds through a .50 cal target to give him the edge, when counting MG hits - because we had him beat and it was unhealthy to beat the Colonel! 😉) Though we could have TWO HEP rounds in the air simultaneously, and hear the call Target! Target! When his crew could Not!... yeah. We got it done. So I know, if those boys are pumping out 50 shells a day they are busting ass. It also means they are in Range, all that time, of the other guys lobbing shells back... You take Good Care my Brothers!

I know I’ll probably get called a commi-lover or whatnot, but I can’t help but feel bad for the conscripts who find themselves stuck in this war. They didn’t join the military, combat wasn’t something any of them sought - stuck in a war they don’t wanna be in, don’t benefit from, and can’t escape from. Obviously I want Ukraine to push the Russians out for good, and I want any soldier who raped/tortured/murdered/pillaged to be held to the most severe of account. Just sucks so many ordinary folks have found themselves between Ukrainian troops to their front & Russian pistols aimed at their backs.

Never give away tactical information. Saying they are turning back to reload is giving away tactical information. Misdirect, say they are moving to the ammo previously stored. Tell them ammo is waiting at the next target. never say what they are doing. The enemy is listening, people. Never say we are moving back, it may have been targeted.
The Criticiser2 ай бұрын
The training that the Ukrainian forces have received from the British and American forces is really making a difference. They can take the initiative and take the fight to the enemy without waiting for an officer to tell them. The Russians are dying in position whilst waiting for an officer to tell them what to do, an officer who is most likely drunk and miles away. Слава Украине 🇺🇦

That tank crew has definitely done some workin, really shows the need for tanks. Thing is there’s not many suitable options. L2’s would be a good choice, but availability is still an issue and Soviet tanks are drying up in NATO. We need the Sherman gen2. Medium tank, good all-around, fairly light fast good mobility good gun with wicked optics and targeting. Decently affordable to make, buy, operate, maintain, supply parts for. Definitely be better than an old tank and have the vision and optics to get the jump on 90% of what’s out there. Maybe I’m wrong but a tank like that could be really useful.
