I'm not sure why Russia would sabotage its own pipelines and income stream to the west? perhaps to release equipment they need for the war effort? On the other hand it could be due to someone over pressurising them from within Russia as a intentional middle finger to their lords and masters. Inspecting them would reveal the latter - if the pipes burst its easily identified versus say an external TNT blast.

It seems strange that Russia would remove the one lever it had against Germany/EU. We will know when the damage can be assessed. Internally blow out = Russia sent a bomb down the line. External blow in = anyone’s guess.

@@rajeshkumarm6441 I would not necessarily agree that this is the same as the Gulf of Tonkin incident. Simply that because the gas flowing through the Nordstream pipeline was turned off some 2 or 3 months ago, so there would be no reason for the pressure inside the line to increase, thus leading to a rupture of the pipeline. Then even if the pressure inside the pipeline had increased, I would expect a singular potentially catastrophic failure, not multiple failures to occur.

An American lawmaker (I don't remember who) proposed the enactment of the draft in response to, and during the Iraq war, in the early 2000s. The point was to DIScourage the warhawks. Congress had not declared war on Iraq, but it was popular in the polls. He was right that the war would instantly lose most of its popularity the moment that the draft was called because that's exactly what's happening in Russia. They support it as long as they or their family members don't have to go.

Exactly. The opposition to the Vietnam war wasn't so much about the war, it was the draft. Even peace loving hippies will ignore a war that isn't going to effect them directly.

The Hippie class, in general, is much more capable of getting the best results with the deferment system, or if they do get caught up in the war, they are much more likely to do a Nixon or a Reagan solution to being in the military. Is retreating to Svatove a more defensible position, though? Didn't the Oskil reservoir give them a lot of defensive cover? Now that they are going to have to abandon those natural aids to defence, is the area around Svatove really that much better? I thought the defensive lines that had been built up east of Oskil had been being built for years, too.
@chrishooge3442

the water barrier would've been better but they didn't have any depth in their defense. Svatove - Krminna road (P66) is necessary to defend otherwise everything to the South can be cut off from supply. I suspect the Ukrainian consolidation gave Russia time to herd some cats into a defense. Edit: I suspect they'll threaten all along the P66 to fix Russian forces but then cut the road north of Svatove. Threaten to encircle Svatove and threaten the route P07 East. That could induce another panicked rout.

Any minehunting vessel (Not mine sweeper) could easily send a remote controlled vehicle, carrying an explosive charge, down to the pipeline. Drop the charge then withdraw to save distance, trigger charge via acoustic signal from save distance. Technically not a big deal. Not saying that is what happened. Could have been be special operations team deployed from submarine although not quite sure if depth is still within operating envelope of human military diver. Not an issue for tech diver.

It is also possible that the charges were delivered through the pipe itself, the industry have devices that can clean the entire length of the pipe, with some invitation maybe it can be loaded with explosives. I’m saying this is what happened, this is just a speculation.

If I understand the old Soviet Army correctly, the Old USSR drafted into the rank and file minority groups within the Soviet Union and commissioned the ethnic Russians for officer positions. The limited noncommissioned officers were usually chosen among Ukrainians! And the backbone of any army are the sergeants. So now Russia is fighting with inept officers who were valued for their loyalty to the regime and rank-and-file privates were forced into the army and they’re fighting an army of basically noncommissioned officers and well train commission officers. Who learn by US green Green berets and probably General war college, Is there any reason why anyone would be surprised that Ukraine is winning?

Could it be rc vehicle that ran along inside the piping. It would have placed a timed shaped charge then go back to where it came from. I grew up watching James bond movies so am thinking along those lines. Either way it teaches Europe a lesson to stand against Russia. It was inevitable he would of done this as we near winter. This will wreak havok with Europes economy. Alternative theory is it's done by the US. As Europe suffers us economy does ok they can gain by Europe's loss as they have good fracking tech. That could be too conspiracy oriented but we need to think who could benefit. One thing im sure about is it wasn't an accident.

The reason as to why Russia would like to blow up their own pipes is that they planned to shut down the gas in any case, in order to squeeze/put pressure upon Europe during the winter, and thus blowing them up mysteriously makes it seem less like they did it, it offers deniability, and it creates confusion, chaos and distrust by making it look like the USA did. It is not unlikely that Russia did this for these reasons.

Just my speculation, this could be an “inside job”, quite literally. PIGs (Pipeline Inspection Gauges: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigging ) with a shaped, or directional explosive payload could have be sent down the pipeline at any PIG launching station upstream of the damaged sections. Since the device is propelled down the pipe by product flow, timing would be critical to allow it to travel a prescribed distance before flows are shut off. Having prior knowledge of when flows are shut would be necessary for placement of the explosives - I’m not pointing any fingers. Since NS2 is leaking gas, the pipeline was at least partially charged, possibly enough pressure/flow early in testing to send a PIG downstream. If the PIGs were disguised as normal units, and Russia decided not to invade, then the pipeline operator could have asked for these ‘Special Operations’ PIGs to be returned to sender when recovered downstream.

With the pipeline there are 2 mysteries. How was it done which will take a few weeks to solve. The other is why/who did it. As it was not being used and has no impact on the price of gas. I suspect Russia did this as a warning to the West that they can do this to underwater infrastructure on which we all depend. We need to tell Russia that if they do attack our infrastructure it will be an act of war and mean it.

I think your are to hasty in assuming that the USA is behind this.

It’s a Ukrainian winter IN Ukraine , they are totally used to it, but this year they will have lots of lovely NATO kit, food and arms to enjoy. It’s the Russian troops that will suffer the most, but no one is going to feel in the least sorry for them .

HOW ABOUT ADDING A DATE OR NUMBER TO REFERENCE YOUR NEWSCAST. IT'S VERY FRUSTRATING HAVING TO LISTEN TO THE FIRST 30secs JUST TO SEE IF IT',S A NEW ONE. ALSO, PERSONAL POINT. HOW ABOUT DELETING THE LIZ TRUSS BIT. IT'S QUITE GRATING. OTHERWISE EXCELLENT STUFF. THANKS, PAUL ,GLASGOW.

This interview is just so much crap. Three pipes were hit leaving one Nordstream 2. None of them had flow so pigs would not be usable. Same with explosive devices sent thru the lines, russia would have had to be the culprit otherwise. The silence from all the big players is very telling. Russia has deep dive submarine teams busy tapping into undersea data cables everywhere thus skills. The US has the most to gain and the russians the most face to loose. Germany will be the most difficult to rescue from EU energy depletion largely owing to all eggs in one basket. This jolt may prompt Germany to send munitions etc to Ukraine, so not to russian advantage. Ordinary EU lives can be maintained more or less but industry will suffer. If it's pipeline is not hit, sensible Norway has most to gain, viva Vikings.

I would blame the low-quality pipes that were used. Anyone knows that a pipe is subject to terrorist acts. The pipe should have withstood a blast.

Let's all push for Peace. Let's at least say the word over and over again to get the idea out there as achievable and desirable. I don't hear it much in the reporting around this war. It's as if the powers that be don't want peace.
