Ukrainian artillery crews make regular use of the Western-supplied M777 howitzer and say it has had a major impact against Russian forces. Crews operating one in a muddy field in the Donetsk region say the key to its success is its targeting precision.

For those unfamiliar with the jargon, a "howitzer" is an artillery piece that can fire direct fire, indirect fire or even arcing fire, like a mortar. This is very useful for firing over hills and mountains and other large obstacles.
@dra6o0n

Very useful since Russia used up most of it's ammo so their counter batteries are less and less threatening, meaning they are ripe for the pickings with shells.

Can you explain the difference between direct and indirect fire? Is direct aimed at a specific target kind of like a sniper rifle whereas indirect is more of a supportive fire in the direction of your enemy and - to continue the analogy - more like a shotgun blast (ie aim in the general direction and pull the trigger but high precision not the goal)?
@robertmaybeth3434
@robertmaybeth3434 Жыл бұрын
@@blakebrown534 Direct fire is shooting at something you can actually see. Indirect fire is against unseen targets, usually at a target somebody else can see, and whom you are in radio contact with, to correct your fire.

@vigilante8374
@vigilante8374 Жыл бұрын
@@dra6o0n Incorrect. We do indeed have hundreds of thousands of TOW missiles, and tens of millions (possibly HUNDREDS of millions) of 25mm, which is used by practically every military branch in many NATO countries (on boats, on aircraft, etc.) 25mm comes in armor piercing and high explosive variants, and the Bradley has separate feeds for both types. Yes precision long range weapons are great, HIMARS and Excalibur shells have been a real game changer, but they are expensive, we don't have a massive amount of them, they're not a replacement for tactical-level weapons and they're not great for dislodging or routing hundreds of thousands of entrenched troops. Compare: threatening to encircle a BTG with dozens of Bradleys WOULD cause a route. Yes I was exaggerating the timeframe slightly, but not by much. We could train and transport in 60-90 days if we cared. It's nowhere near as difficult to train or set up logistically as compared to something like an M1 or, heaven forbid, F-16. I'm all for giving Ukraine ATACMS but it's more important to give them the ground power to physically push out Russia. Have you seen how Ukrainians fight? They are using/abusing Hummers, Australian Bushmasters (not to be confused with the 25mm Bushmaster autocannon), and other various MRAPS as glorified technicals. Even without considering the TOW missiles, the Bradley's 25mm autocannon is MUCH more powerful, long range and accurate than the .50 machine guns they're currently using. It's not just more effective, it's also likely very cost-effective to give Ukraine Bradleys. They're not an expensive platform (the TOWs aren't super cheap, but they're cheaper than Javelins and they can use 25mm to destroy anything short of a T-72. Actually, 25mm even has a few T-72 kills in Iraq; it can be effective if you're firing at its side armor at close ranges.)

I was transferred from field artillery to infantry and served as a rifleman. And, I never killed either females nor children. For close to a half century I have played Chess with Conscience, an inward duel that persists, and always ends in Check or draw; because Conscience knows that every time I raised my rifle the other man had a rifle. @@thomasbradley2225 What, was it the first assault on American personal or was it the second attack, that never actually happened? nor does such an attack justify going to war with Vietnam and the deaths of thousands of Vietnamese and Americans, the fuck were they doing in the Gulf of Tonkin anyway, just like today, America needs to mind it's own fucking business and just like then, America is still waging and/or instigating wars all over the fucking globe! only thing is now, they've changed strategy and like in Libya, Syria and today in Ukraine, they interfere with the country in many ways and ultimately let others do the fighting for them. Now, for the most part, i blame the American elite, I'm almost certain there is many Americans who are against the shit their government is doing and kudos to them for thinking for themselves and seeing reality for what it is, though, I'm unsure if you're one of the decent Americans or not, it's a given that Americans were drafted/forced to fight in Vietnam, so just maybe, you are on the good side, but given you're here tuning into some Ukrainian propaganda bullshit about the M777 changing the course of the war and worse, on the front and the region that Ukraine has been shelling and killing innocent people since 2014! I would suspect you both support Ukraine's fight and America interfering once again, but hey, just maybe you're not that stupid and I'm wrong about you, just maybe you're able to see the reality of the situation and how Ukraine has not just innocently found itself subject to unjustified Russian aggression, cause, it is justified, just like America was justified when Russia tried placing nuclear weapons in Cuba, though, America has an agenda in Ukraine, this is very apparent and is why one can track and follow how they've interfered there now and to the lead up of hostilities in 2014, thankfully more Americans are waking up to the truth everyday, though still, unfortunately not enough to stop the elites from terrorizing others for a profit or like in the middle east, for a stake of control of said countries natural resources.

As an 8 year Army veteran & ex-19kilo tanker I can say I have nothing but respect for all the combat arms. We have inter branch rivalries but truth be told its combined arms that win wars. Tanks can’t win it alone nor can infantry or artillery. As a tanker we offer serious direct fire firepower. Infantry hump it & must be tough as nails & courageous. Artillery is utterly devastating and can destroy an enemy’s morale. Also air defense & air support are vital to the modern battlefield. However, we cannot do any fighting without supplies & logistics or full bellies so kudos to all those who support the combat arms. I was friends with several 13B Gun bunnies - maybe they changed the artillery MOS designation as I have been out for several years - and they are true soldiers & pros. Glad these arty pieces are helping the Ukrainians turn the tide of war because for a minute there was doom and gloom talk that the Russian military would overrun Ukraine. However, as we all know, defenders can have an advantage over invaders especially when an army & peoples are motivated to fight for their homeland, freedom & each other against a mostly conscripted military that ostensibly doesn’t want to even be there.

@@virginiaoflaherty2983 No country can be admittted to NATO that is currently at war. I can see the logic in that. I don'r agree with it , but I can see it. UKR was not admitted before due to the "provocative" stance it might convey to ruzzia, ( weak argument I know). Also one of the criteria for admission is a certain hold on the level of corruption. UKR post soviet times, was/is still a corrupt country. Zelensky had started a crack down on it, but then ruzzia started a war.

It's interesting to see the Ukrainian team working as I have seen US and Canadian teams when firing the M777. It goes back to that Ukrainian veteran artillerist saying "Everything is as it should be." I know US artillerists were involved in the design process. This shows what engineers and artillerists can do together. I know that Canada has provided a lot of precision shells and some M777's and I think the US is over 200 now. Best use of US taxpayer money ever.

@@charlesrichardson8635 I kinda agree, if you know history and you know that this supposed war actually has last for almost 10 years you would perhaps get the other side of the spectrum, zelensky want to hold on to his billions but yet doves young men lucky enough to have wife and kids but yet proceed with his comedic slogan: we will fight to the last Ukrainian ? What type of mentality is that ? Not European that’s for sure unless there is something I’ve missed out on. I don’t glorify the horror many stubborn people who won’t leave experience it’s not justified it’s sad but zelenzky should probably stop his stubbornness for the sake of his people 🤷🏽

With this howitzer, you no longer need to fire 50,000 shells per day. If a shell hits its target after three shots, it's a huge saving in ammo, not to mention the Excalibur shells which hit every shot, but they are very expensive. Keep it up, you will win this war, Slava Urkaini 🇺🇦🇺🇦 🇧🇪
